VA Peninsula Bowling - Week 7 Results, Final Four, & More Info

A bunch of wild turkeys.
Round one of the playoffs was last night, and I got to say, everyone brought their "A" games. Just at a glance, the scores looked higher than normal. With a trip to the final four at stake, CLUBWAKA bowlers were focused on knocking those pins down.

FINAL FOUR IS SET

Ultimately, the first round went as expected with all four top seeds advancing. Next week, Blurred Lanes, Evil Empire, Balls & Splits, and the Fresh Prince will compete in a four-way bowl off to determine the Winter 16-17 championship! Everyone will bowl two games as usual. The top four scores from each game will be added together to determine the teams total. The team with the most combined pins will be victorious.

**Welcome home, Dwight!
***Good thing there wasn't some sort of Samson type deal with his now shaven beard. Brad's still got his powers, apparently.
****Top female score of the season

Although there are only four teams eligible for the trophy, we have a full slate of games scheduled for Monday including some matchups that did not happen in the regular season.

LEAGUE PHOTO

Prior to the games kicking off, we're going to gather around for a league-wide photo to commemorate the finale of a fantastic first season. Also, it'll give us a better pic for our Facebook group banner, which is kind of dull. So, make sure you get to the lanes a few minutes early so we can organize the pic without too much delay.

SPRING SEASON

As always, a reminder that registration is open for our Spring 2017 season. We're moving to Sunday evenings to accommodate up to 20 teams. We still have some space available, so join us! Individuals and small groups are welcome. The new season starts on 2/26, so it's right around the corner! Register at http://www.kickball.com/season/vapeninsulabowlingspring2017.

GLOW BOWLING MEETUP

To bridge the gap between the winter and spring seasons, Sparetimes is hosting a Friday night Glow Bowl meetup. For only $15, you'll get unlimited bowling including shoe rentals. You don't have to be a member of the league to participate, so feel free to invite some friends. Please be sure to RSVP on the Facebook invite though so we can ensure we have enough lanes reserved.

Thank you all for a really awesome season to this point. Looking forward to one more Monday night with you all!

The Best Peninsula Kickballers Born in the 90s

Coed adult kickball is a veteran's game. Time and time again, experience trumps youth. But father time catches up with us all and with many elite players hitting the north side of 35, it's only inevitable that their grip on the sport will loosen. There's a new generation waiting in the wings who haven't even hit their prime years yet. These men and women born in the 90s are poised to dominate the sport for the next 20-30 seasons. Let's take some time to highlight some of the best with my personal picks for the CLUBWAKA VA Peninsula U27 team.

Slow-pez
David Lopez
Rumspringa, Outfield

I was shocked when I saw that Lopez was on this list. It seems like he has been around forever. And it's true, he's a 5-year veteran and hasn't even hit 27 yet. David's birthday is in late September and he likes to tell a story about the time he e-mailed me in the summer before his 21st birthday to ask if he could register for the fall season. Like the strict asshole that I am, I told him he had to wait until the spring. Well, he did, and he's been playing ever since. Lopez excels as a speedy player who can kick near the top and play multiple positions well.

Randall Hammond
Chaotic KILFs, Outfield
Randall is a talented athlete with a lot of baseball experience. That experience has translated over to the kickball field as he's been a standout player for the KILFs over the past 3 years.

The KILFs have some of the best young
talent in the league.
TJ Bowman
Chaotic KILFs, Outfield
I'll be honest. When TJ first started, I never imagined that I would include him on a list of best anything. He was a little rough around the edges, to say the least. I remember watching the KILFs first playoff game and seeing TJ drop a handful of fly balls and cringing. Not good. But all he's done since then is show love and dedication to the game. Bowman is a very reliable outfielder, fundamentally sound offensive player, and by all accounts a great teammate. Certainly deserving of some recognition.

Chris Storar
Chaotic KILFs, Pitcher
Chris is a fiery competitor who puts his heart and soul into every play when he's on the kickball field. Storar is the classic 'five-tool' player. He bunts well. He has speed. Can kick liners. Has some deep power. Strong armed and can play any position on defense. I'm a fan. Only 25 years old, but he's already lead the KILFs to the Tortolini Title as well as been on a VA Freedom championship squad.

Justin Madon
Fireballs, First Base
One of the underrated players in the league is Justin Madon. His reliable hands and length at first have been an important factor in the Fireballs' recent success.

Justin parties.

Jamie Gallagher
Cardiac Arrest, Third Base
Cardiac Arrest made a
splash when they picked
Jamie up.
Jamie only started playing kickball in the summer of 2016. She's barely got 6 months of experience under her belt, but she's already proven to be one of the best women in the league. A deep background in team sports has given her a natural awareness and quickly helped her adapt to the game of coed adult kickball. Perhaps her most impressive asset is her big right leg. When she comes up to kick, you'd be wise not to bring your outfielders in too far. Jamie might just burn you.

Journey Schmidt
JFK, Outfield
Big things sometimes come in small packages. Despite Journey's small frame, she's one of the better female outfielders in VA Peninsula. The former softball standout at Hampton High (#CrabberPride) can track fly balls well, cover good ground, and is very reliable in either corner of the outfield. Already in her young career, Journey has won championships in both VA Peninsula and VA Freedom.

Journey about to paint that line.

Devin Raines
Fireballs, Outfield
Like Journey, Devin also grew up playing competitive softball. What stands out most about Devin is her drive and competitiveness. She always give 100% max effort. Since debuting in 2014 as a 21-year-old rookie, she's gone all in with kickball. Devin plays in multiple leagues a season, all year round. The hard work is paying off as she's beginning to build a reputation as an excellent all-around player. And she hasn't even begun to scratch the surface yet!

Intensity.
Trey Simmons
Free Agent, Catcher
This man was only born a mere 23 years ago but has quickly established himself as one of the best catchers in all of kickball. Trey is so damn good at such a young age, that I can't even imagine the level he'll be at in 4 or 5 years. Simmons' natural athleticism is only matched by his outstanding work ethic. Last year he took a job that required him to move to the western part of the state and despite being 2-3 hours away, he still traveled back to Hampton Roads regularly to participate in VA Peninsula, Freedom, one-day tourneys, and Hammerheads practices. It's that dedication to continuous improvement that will lead to a lot of Wentworth Trophies® in Trey's future.

Not the most graceful moment in Trey's kickball career.
The couple that slays together
stays together.

Haley Efird
Night Sweats, Second Base
Her husband, Gene, might get more of the attention (more on him in a moment), but Haley has become a great kickball player in her own right. She's practiced hard and honed the ability to put a bunt right down the line. In fact, she's probably one of the toughest women to get out. The VA Patriot captains agree as she was one of the first women taken in the draft this past summer. Haley had an incredible 2015 campaign, winning the Grand Slam of kickball. She earned championships in VA Raptor, Freedom, Peninsula, and Patriot, becoming the first player ever to do so.

Gene Efird
Night Sweats, Charger
What can I possibly say about Gene that hasn't already been said? He's not bad at kickball at all.

Honorable Mention
There were several to choose from. Here are some of the players that I had a really tough time leaving off my starting 11 (No particular order): Jacob Bean, Nick Pera, Alexandra McCarthy, Caitlyn Weirick, Katelyn Bryce, Kathryn Montgomery, Adam Frantz, Sarah Schmitt, Sarah Szekely, Teddy Phillips, Maghan Bryce

Despite all evidence to the contrary, I'm not the all-knowing expert of kickball. No doubt I missed some really deserving players. So, please comment on Facebook. What players do you think belong on the U27 All-Peninsula team?

VA Peninsula Bowling - Week 6 Results and Playoff Matchups!

Trick Shotz actually won one of their games last night! WHAT?

Well, the first regular season of CLUBWAKA VA Peninsula Bowling is in the books. Let's take a look at last night's results:

NOTE: In the screenshot below, some of the team totals are inaccurate because the lanes added total pins instead of top four. Know that when we updated the standings on our end, only top four was included, so the CLUBWAKA standings are accurate.

With the regular season now completed, let's take a look at the standings and the playoff matchups.

PLAYOFF FORMAT

  • On January 30th, the top 8 teams will face each other in a single elimination qualifier. #9 Harambe and #10 Trick Shotz will face off in a special grudge match with bragging rights on the line!

The team with highest total pins (top four from each game) will earn the championship and the league trophy (Can't wait until you all see what we got)! The remaining 6 teams will be paired off for additional exhibition bowling.

SCHEDULING NOTE

I apologize for any confusion with the schedule last night. When I was updating the schedule after the snow-out, I accidentally deleted a week and then had to recreate it. I didn't even think that the lanes would have the original schedule already. That's why the schedule at the alley didn't match the one online. It's all updated to reflect last night's (original) matchups though. Sorry about the goof up.

SPRING REGISTRATION

Don't forget to sign up for next season! We start rolling on Sunday, February 26th. The deadline to join is Feb 19th, unless we sell out before then! Don't wait. We only have room for 20 teams.

FINAL SHOT

Since I'm the author of this blog, I'm going to close it out with my extremely cute wife hopping down the lane and tossing a big fat X.

VA Peninsula Bowling - Schedule Updates & Playoff Format

Happy MLK Jr. Day! I wanted to Just wanted to provide a few updates on the schedule. Due to the snow-out, we have pushed last week's scheduled games to tonight.

The playoffs which were scheduled to begin on 1/23, have been pushed back a week and a new round of regular season games has scheduled.

Playoffs

Speaking of playoffs, let's go over the format for the winter 2017 season. With only 2 weeks slotted and 10 teams, it provided a unique challenge, but I think Keith & I came up with a good solution.

Round 1 - January 30th: The top 8 teams will be paired off in a single elimination format. (1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5). The winners of each head to head matchup will earn a berth in the championship four-way on February 6th.

NOTE: The 9th and 10th ranked teams will be scheduled to play each other in a fun game.

Round 2 - February 6th: The winning teams from round 1 will face off in a four-way match. Two games will be bowled as usual. The team with the most pins (from their top four scores each game) will be crowned the league champion!

NOTE: The remaining 6 teams who did not make the final four will also be scheduled in exhibition games for fun and bragging rights. Everyone will get to bowl a full 7 weeks.

PARTY!

This Saturday, we have our CLUBWAKA January Party. All members of the VA Peninsula Bowling League are invited to come out to COUNTY GRILL HAMPTON (45 E Mercury Blvd, Hampton). The event starts at 3:30 PM and all CLUBWAKA members will enjoy free beer! We have a keg of Bud Light and Rolling Rock on tap for us, along with $13.99 wing buckets and $5 appetizers. (The food at County is amazing, so this is worth coming out for alone.) You definitely don't want to miss this celebration! Be sure to join the event on Facebook to receive notification reminders as well.

SPRING SEASON!

Although we're all focused on closing out this season the right way, we also have to look forward to the spring, which is right around the corner! We are moving to Sunday evenings at 5:30 pm which will allow us to include more teams. The season begins on February 26th and it's starting to fill up nicely. To register, visit kickball.com/season/vapeninsulabowlingspring2017.

Thank you all for being an awesome bowling league! If anyone has any questions or feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!
