If you all know me, you know that
one of my favorite things in the world to do is to pretend like our
kickball games exist in a universe where they are a “real” major league
big deal. Whether it’s All-Peninsula teams, trading cards, podcasts
where we pretend like we’re NFL Countdown… the list of stuff I do to
create the escapist reality is pretty ridiculous. But just when you
think it can’t get any more nerdy, I introduce to you the VA Patriot
Stat Project.
In an effort to quantify the production of our
drafted players, a team of dedicated volunteers* has come together to
help score every game this season and record the statistics of every
player in the league with a standardized set of guidelines.
We’ll use these numbers to help recognize players who have great games
and seasons this summer, not only on the 3 Up 3 Down podcast, but also
in a weekly ‘Inside the Numbers’ post here on the blog. At this point,
the full statistics will not be made public,
as I’m sure some people will be sensitive to having their stats put on
blast if they aren’t great. The reason why we’re doing this is because
it’s hopefully interesting and FUN for fellow sports nerds to enjoy.
It’s meant to enhance the league, not become
a negative feature. If you think this is all stupid, that’s ok. Please
don’t read or comment on these posts and continue enjoying the league
how you want to!
*Side note about the ‘dedication’ of the stat
keepers. Holy cow. That was evident in week 1. When the rain started
pouring down, I thought to myself, “There goes the stat keeping project.
No way all the volunteers stick around to record
kickball stats.” And honestly, I wouldn’t have blamed them. But sure
enough, they hung in there, recorded every single hit, walk, rki, and
run. Amazing. When you see a stat keeper at The Cactus, be sure to buy
them a PBR.
For those who have not grown up watching and/or
playing baseball, let’s start off with a quick crash course on the major
statistical categories we’ll be tracking.
- At Bats (AB): Number of plate appearances that a kicker has, excluding any that result in a walk or SAC
- Hits (H): Successful kicks that result in the player reaching base
- Walks (BB): Kicker reaches base after pitcher throws four balls outside of the strike zone in their at bat.
- Singles, Doubles, Triples, Home Runs (1B, 2B, 3B, HR): Probably don’t need to explain these ones. But it is worth noting that for consistency sake we kept our scoring guidelines simple. As such, there is no such thing as an error in kickball for these purposes. i.e. Any kick that ends with the runner on 2nd base is a double, whether it was a line drive into the gap or a bunt and over throw at 1.
- Runs (R): How many runs the player scored
- Runs Kicked In (RKI): How many runs the player drove in.
- Sacrifices (SAC): A productive out. For our scoring purposes, SACs are recorded when
- 1. The player bunts down 1 to move two runners to 2nd and 3rd.
- 2. A fly ball out that drives in a run
- 3. Any other play that drives in a run (ex. a force out at 2, but a run that scores from 3rd, the kicker would not be charged with a fielder’s choice, but with a SAC/RKI.
- Kicking Average (AVG): =Hits/At bats
- On Base Percentage =(OBP): H+BB/AB+BB+SAC
- Slugging (SLG): =Total Bases/AB
- On Base Plus Slugging (OPS): =OBP+SLG
Got all that? Ok, cool. So, let’s go ahead and take
a look at some of the early league leaders in a sloppy opening night of
VA Patriot.
Hits
Naturally, those teams with double headers had an
advantage in this category. 12 players recorded 4 at bats on Wednesday.
Of those 12, three individuals went a perfect 4 for 4.

Standing alone atop the leader board after week 1
is LSD’s Allen Walker. His 2 run bomb was the only homer kicked on

The Big Green Buddies were involved in a pair of
shootouts in week 1, scoring a total of 14 runs in their double header.
It’s not surprise then to see a couple of BGBs atop the table for Runs.

Kicking Average / OBP
41 players recorded a perfect kicking average and On Base % on Wednesday.
Slugging %
The number 1 overall draft pick, Gene Efird was one
of 3 players to record a 2.000 SLG. Way to make an early impact and
payoff that high investment.
