Random Thoughts
- The chilly night and off-season rust may have lead to some sloppy defense in the Cardiac/Rumspringa show down. 'Springa had a couple of outfield drops that really opened it up. If these two teams face off again in June, I'd be surprised if there are 10 runs scored combined again.
- The defenses were not sloppy at all in the KA/Bizarro game. The pitching was impressive, including standout performances by Bizarro's Kyle Tyson, Geoff Morehart and KA's Daniel Shaw and Derrick Robbins. Hits were hard to come by, and even harder when you have guys like Jason Kidd busting their asses making diving plays. His catch in the 4th inning was the play of the night.
- The Bizarro/KA game is only the 9th time in VA Peninsula history that a game has ended in a 0-0 tie. To put that in perspective, there has been 996 games played since 2008. Less than 1% of all games have ended without a runner touching home. The last 0-0 tie was on May 21st, 2014 (Rumspringa/Ballz Deep).
- Who says WAKA Kickball = "Buntball"? There were several bombs dropped in week 1, including home runs by Adam Tatem, Ben Ottman, Mike "Ball Tongue" Mallozzi. Smokin' Bunts' Ed Aaron nearly had a home run as well, but was held at 3rd base after some interference caused a dead ball. The ball was flying around War Memorial Stadium last night!
- If Cardiac Arrests' catcher Trey Simmons is this good with a cast on his hand, I can't imagine how great he's going to be when his broken bones heal. He made some ridiculous plays behind the plate last night.
- Was really surprised that Fireballs was on the other end of a lopsided loss. I had higher expectations for them. But captain TJ Guarry told me, "We still have a ways to go." I'd be willing to bet they only go up from here. Too much talent on that squad to be held down.
- Credit to Eat My Short Kick though. Great week 1 win! I saw Dewey Wilson running to the Tiki Bar during the middle of the game and coming back balancing about 6 beers stacked up. "Hey, we still have 2 more innings to go!"
- The KPGM/DCOMB game looked like it was a wild one, with several twists and lead changes. A great opening chapter to what could be a great rivalry in years to come.
- Pitching Dez is going to take their lumps on the field, without a doubt. They did a pretty good job not letting the 5TDK game get completely away from them, considering their lack of experience. As Victoria Davis gushed in her "What's Up, WAKA?" segment, Zach Highsmith stood out for 1) making several catches and 2) rocking some jeans while doing so. Brent Obershaw's legacy lives on.
All in all, it was an incredible first night of the season. I barely even scratched the surface with my notes. What was your favorite part of week 1?
