CLUBWAKA MLS Week 1 Recap

WEEK 1

Week 1 is always the hardest week as there's a large checklist of things to do (shirts, refreshments, field prep, photos, etc.) and in preparing for it, you're always afraid there's something you're going to forget.  But when you have an amazing league around you to help out it makes it a whole hell of a lot easier.  So thanks to everyone who collected their shirts, collected flags, picked up trash, educated people on the rules, gave a little leeway to teams with start time issues, ate a bunch of Lil' Debbie snacks, and kept things calm and fun so I didn't have a coronary.

HOUSEKEEPING ISSUES:

- There were a couple of jersey color issues in Week 1.  We're working on getting pinnies currently, but in the meantime I ask that each of you bring white t-shirts with you to the field on Sundays.  That way if we end up with any problems, that can be your second 'kit'.  If you're reading this and haven't posted on your team page or let anyone know, you're not doing it right.  Help spread the word!

- We're doing something a bit different with the playoffs this season due to the challenge of a 14 team bracket, trying to avoid triple headers in one day, and trying to make the first round games more competitive than last year.

Top 8 will play for the big trophy and bottom 6 will play for a mini trophy.  Schedule will be as follows:

WEEK 1 RESULTS AND STANDINGS

TEAM OF THE WEEK - WEEK 1

Blake Thompson - Nothing like a 2 goal debut to get you on Team of the Week.  Asking for a CLUBWAKA baby t-shirt for your son earns you some brownie points too.

Kim Merritt - Debated putting Kim in for player of the week in goal and on the field since he had a shutout in the first half and then scored in the second.

Matthew Kennedy - OK.  Apparently he's not only here for the beer.  First game.  New league.  Two goal performance.

Vick Rojas - Showing that her foot works.  Theme of the week... Debut.  Two goals.  Rinse.  Repeat.

Michelle Herbst - New to Ronaldo McDonaldo and was well worth the transfer $$ to bring her in from a local brewery that you may know.

Matthew Burleson - Two goals and a solid shift in the fortress that is the Moat Monsters back line.

Jay Coble - Starting right where he left off last season with players he doesn't even know giving him Hands of God shout outs on Facebook.  Was surprising to hear that it was Jay's first shutout.

HONORABLE MENTION FOR WEEK 1 GOES TO DUSTIN HARRIS OF IBRA KADIBRA FOR THIS BITCHIN' PENALTY SAVE!

THE RACE FOR THE GOLDEN BOOT
AND WE'RE OFF... and we didn't get very far. Tom Weniger (last season's golden boot winner) is in the lead with his hat trick in week 1.  A couple of Foot Works, Hangovers, Moat Monsters, and three McDonaldos also make the list with two a piece.  The aforementioned Matthew Kennedy representing Here for the Beer is in the mix too.  If you all keep it up, maybe we'll commission our first CLUBWAKA MLS Statue.

SPOTLIGHTS

I'M EXTREMELY PROUD TO ANNOUNCE OUR VERY FIRST.....

REFEREE SPOTLIGHT -
Sean Kent - CLUBWAKA Referee Assignor

How long have you been reffing?   I have been refereeing for 14 years.

Biggest game you ever officiated?  The biggest game I ever refereed was a friendly between a team headed to an international tournament in Israel and a team of PDL all stars.

Favorite beverage?   My favorite beverage before and during games is water.  After games, my favorite beverage is Oozlefinch Old Fogey Hazy IPA!

Reffing philosophy in one or two sentences:  My reffing philosophy is pretty simple.  Most of us are going pro in a field other than soccer, so let’s make sure that we can all go pro without any injuries.

What you're looking forward to most about the season:  I am very excited about being involved in CLUBWAKA where we are all playing for the love of the game.  And for the post game beverages at Oozelfinch!

Biggest reffing pet peeve:  My biggest reffing pet peeve is people (players, coaches, fans, AND referees) who aren’t having fun.  If you want to be unhappy you can do that at home for free!!

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT #3 -
Buck Waldrop AND Little Man William Waldrop - GOALKEEPER, MISFITS

BUCK
How long have you been playing?
I’ve been playing soccer for 25 years (started in PAA) and I grew up here in Hampton Roads but I’ve lived all over the world including being born in England.

What did you like most about the first season of CLUBWAKA MLS?
I liked being reminded just how much I love soccer and playing it, which this league brought back all those great memories. My favorite thing about last season was us winning our 2nd game of the season even with no subs and all the cards against us.

Favorite Player?
My favorite player is tied between tim Howard and Wayne Rooney.

What should teams look for out of the Misfits this season?
Teams should be looking out for the misfits because we are coming out hungry and prepared to earn some big time wins this season.
