Week 2 Recap

5 O'Clockers 4, Rumspringa 0
Right off the bat, the game looked like it was going to be a rough one for Rumspringa when lead off man, Ricky Holmes was rung up looking on three straight strikes from SP Corey Carlyle. To start out the game with a strikeout of one of the league's best, certainly gave the Clockers a lot of confidence, which they rode all night. Catcher Adam Flowers in particular had a standout game from behind the plate. "Adam had a monster game," teammate Jeff Pauley said afterwards, "He had about six out his mind plays for outs." On offense, the Clockers scored four runs by mixing their speedy bunts with deep kick aways, keeping the 'Springa D off balance all game. Definitely an impressive victory for the 5OC.
Flowers comes out strong on a Holmes bunt late in the game.
Jiminy Kick-It 6, Saved by the Balls 0
For a team of all rookies, JKI sure has picked up on the game well. Offensively, they bunted to get baserunners on base before unleashing their deep kicks to drive them in. Saved by the Balls struggled to make the plays in the outfield and weren't able to put any runs across. Still looking for their first win in franchise history.

New Kickheads on the Block 5, Foul Balls 0
Captain Amanda Hassell was very
excited after the NKotB victory.
Foul Balls came in flying high after a two game sweep of their double header in week 1. But as noted in Nathaniel Johnson's excellent AMAH(F)B, the Foulie's focus may have drifted away from the kickball field and more towards the Bar Buzz. The Foul Balls looked flat in the first inning, and NKotB took advantage of it. Lead by the speed of rookies Emmanuel Anderson and Jennifer Epps (who is definitely not afraid to slide), and the powerful legs of Jake Carel and Courtney Efird, the Kickheads jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. (See highlights of the NKotB vs. Foul Balls game here)... Afterwards, Foul Balls would have their revenge, as they challenged NKotB to a best of 5 series of flip cup at Luckie's and triumphed at the table.

Chubby Gangsters 5, Jagernauts 2
The Gangbangers held off a Jagernaut rally in the 5th inning to secure the impressive victory. To read more about the game, please see the Jagers' Justin Littell's great blog post/recap.
Tracy Colby is fired up after scoring.
Moose Knuckles 5, Chicken Tetrazzini 0
Jiselle Decker had a lot to smile about
after another Moose Knuckle win.
Last week, Chicken Tetrazzini was fueled by intense rage at the perceived lack of respect shown to them by the WAKA VA Peninsula kickball media. They used this as motivation and earned a decisive victory over Battlestar Ballsacktica. The BB win helped earn some respect for CT, as they went into week 2 as 1.5 run favorites. The lack of bulletin board material clearly hurt the Tetrazzini, as they were shut out by the mighty Moose Knuckles.

The Emperors Club 0, Rumspringa 0
It's my blog, so I'll put a picture of
myself up there if I want to.
Bank of America is an organization that hires nothing but the best associates to work for them. People who are motivated to exceed expectations and the drive to produce world class results. So, it should come as no surprise that in a game where 4.5 out of the 5 innings were pitched by Bank of America associates Matt Wellbrock (Rumspringa) and Brent Wentworth (VIPs... 3rd Person Alert!), that there were no runs scored... Of course they had some help. For the VIPs, C Roger Jackson, Ch/1B Anthony "Rocket Laser Cannon" Williams, and Ch/1B Keith Best played very well together as a unit, and smothered the Rumspringa bunts. When Rumspringa did try to switch it up, OFs Josh Lively and Lorraine Adkins were both reliable and came through with big catches... On the offensive side, the normally reliable VIPs were completely off their game. Nearly every bunt either went straight back to Wellbrock, or was popped up in the air to Ch Ricky Holmes. Holmes did have the opportunity to make several highlight worthy sliding catches as he crashed the line, and made The Emperors Club pay. C Guy Sumrall, who has replaced the injured Troy Southall, made a number of good plays from behind the plate as well, and the end result was only four base runners for the VIPs (2 of which were erased by double plays). One offensive highlight for The Emperors Club was that Lori Medford has extended her hitting streak to 2 games to begin the year. Medford is now 2-2 on the season and tied for the VIP lead in OBP with John Laneave... Afterwards, Rumspringa was very excited about the result, given that this was the first time in 3 seasons that they have not lost to the VIPs.

Jagernauts 5, Moose Knuckles 3
The 'Nauts built up a 5-1 lead, and looked like they were going to easily win, but the Moose rallied in the 5th to make it close. Ultimately, they came up just short though. See Justin's recap for all the details, including a sneak preview of SP Mike Seals' new pitch.
Seals gets low on his delivery to the plate.
Battlestar Ballsacktica 9, Off in the Corner 2
MKEH celebrates after scoring a run in
the 3rd inning.
In week 1, Battlestar Ballsacktica looked like they were going to fall far short of their high self-expectations as they got beat handily by Chicken Tetrazzini. Head Coach Andy Tapley was determined not to let that happen though, as he made a few key adjustments to the Battlestar lineup and encouraged his team to put last week behind them. The forward focus paid off, as the BB lineup was relentless against an overmatched Off in the Corner defense. Using their speed, power, and aggressiveness on the base paths, Battlestar was able to rack up 9 runs and cruise to victory. On the defensive side of the ball, SP Jonathan Pilz had an outstanding game, throwing a nice, hard, and accurate pitch that had very deceptive movement and a late break... The Ballsacks definitely took care of business and looked more like the team they thought they'd be going into the season... For Off in the Corner, while the result was lopsided, they too made progress from week 1. The offense rallied late in the game and scored a couple of runs. They're hoping that momentum carries over into week 3.

Vicious & Delicious 2, Just For Kicks 0
"I'm pretty sore today." Wilcox said on
Thursday, "I was throwing hard. I really
wanted to beat them."
The top of the VD lineup may end up becoming one of the best in the entire country before all is said and done. James Salgado, Joey Smith, Bryan "NoShoes" Moore, Chris "Bundy" LeBlanc, Jimmy Wilcox, and Dave Dixon make up a modern day murderers row. That portion of their lineup is going to score a shit ton of runs this spring, but in the first inning against Just For Kicks, they were shuit down after threatening with runners on. From that point on, both defenses were locked in and it was a pitchers duel between VD's Wilcox and Daniel Reyes and JFK's Daniel Shaw. In fact, it looked like this was going to be the second 0-0 tie of the night, but the VD top of the order had something to say about that. In the top of the 5th, the same six gentlemen I listed above were due back up, and they would not be shut out again. They efficiently manufactured 2 runs and that's all they would need for the W.
