After Winning Tortolini Title, Rumspringa Helps Poor People Get Wet

I really need to work on my titles. <insert thinking face emoji>

Without making it known, Rumspringa was playing for a cause last month in the VA Peninsula Kickball Tournament. Prior to the climatic end to the 2016 Fall campaign, 'Springa pledged to support Charity Water if they won the Tortolini Realty Conference Championships. As you all know, Rumspringa was successful in their quest, and following the event came together and donated over $500 to the cause.

Charity Water is an organization dedicated to helping impoverished people around the world get access to clean and safe drinking water. According to statistics, every day 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. Rumspringa's donation will help CW build clean water projects around the world.

Encouraged by the outpouring of support from their team, the campaign leader Ricky Holmes, is raising his fundraising goal and pushing to raise over $1,000. Currently, the team has raised $845, so the goal is definitely in reach. If you'd like to help support this worthy cause, please visit the Charity Water website and make a donation. Any amount helps and will make a difference in someone's quality of life.

VA Peninsula - Fall '15 Week 4 Round Up

Ooooh, do you feel the chill in the air? Fall is officially here, which means it's just about hoodie season. It also means that the Fall WAKA VA Peninsula season is in full swing. We're starting to see teams gel and some great kickball being played. Time to take a look at week 4 in review.

News, Notes, & Observations

• The buzz at Tapps was all about the Fireballs, but not for their usual post-game antics, but for what they accomplished on the field. In one of the biggest upsets in league history, the Fireballs defeated Spring 2015 finalists Smokin' Bunts with a walk off kick. It was a wild, back and forth affair. Smokin' Bunts looked like they were going to survive, as they were only one out from the victory. Sarah Brooks kept the 2 out rally alive with a kick to left field that fell in to load the bases. John Vrooman then punished his former team with a game winning line drive. Afterwards, the Bar Buzz champs partied pretty hard at Tapps! Great win. 

• Although, Cardiac Arrest won the game, the highlight of the night came from Rumspringa catcher Troy Southall. With 1 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the CA kicker went up one. Troy tagged the kicker and then wheeled around and did a no look, diving hook shot that pegged Rob Allen in the chest as he was diving towards home. I've never seen anything like it. 
• Huge win for Rumspringa, blanking KA, 1-0. When that defense is on their game, they're one of the elite unit's in kickball. 
• Kick Ass did bounce back in the 2nd half of their double header and earned a 2-1 win over the injury riddled DCOMB squad. This was the first loss for DCOMB and leaves Cardiac Arrest as the only undefeated squad this Fall. 
• Cardiac defeated the KILFs, 7-0 on Wednesday. This was the first time I've gotten a chance to see the KILFs in action this fall. Their new charger, CJ Smith stood out. He made his fair share of mistakes in our game, but you could see flashes of outstanding play as well. I think he'll continue to get better with more reps and could turn into one of the better chargers in the league. Until then though, the KILFs are going to have to ride the roller coaster of ups and down. 
• The "kick pass" from the catcher position is always a high risk move. Not many players possess the accuracy and coordination to keep this play in their arsenal. The KILFs Scott Tinsley does though. He made two successful kick pass outs in their win over the Alcobalics.
• While I love seeing all the photos of teams with the bar buzz belt or going out together on the weekends, I really love seeing pics of WAKA Kickballers giving back to their community. Cardiac's Jill Simms and Tribal Yoga hosted an open class with donations going towards our Relay For Life team, WAKA Kicks Cancer. In addition to being a hell of a workout, we earned over $600 for the American Cancer Society! The Situation's Lasalle Blanks was there recording some footage, so look for the story on 13 News this week. 
• In addition to the yoga class, a small but might group of kickballers volunteered to serve beers at a War Memorial Stadium concert on Saturday night. All of the tips will go to the Relay team as well. In addition to raising money for the charity, we also helped the War Memorial staff out of a big bind by volunteering. It's always good to help keep our relationship strong and give back to the organization that provides us with the best fields in Hampton Roads to play on. Thank you, Erin Small, Kat Greene, George Kiriazidis, and Chris "Bundy" LeBlanc for your selfless service. You did a great thing for the charity and for the league yesterday. When you see these guys on Wednesday, buy them a beer! 

• The trading card fundraiser had a successful opening night. Thank you to everyone who purchased cards. I will have them at the fields and Tapps again on Wednesday night, so bring some cash, a sharpie for autographs, and buy a few packs... On Thursday, Andreas Beyersdorf wondered which player card had the best smile. 



Tough call. 

• On paper, Five Toe Death Kick seems to have the better team when compared to Hot Dogs & Tacos. But games aren't played on paper. Whenever these two teams play, the Tacos just have their number. HDT peppered the 5TDK defense with well placed kicks and cruised to a 5-0 W. 

Happy and Hoodied

Baby it’s cold outside…well almost.  This week’s WAKA Wednesday Fashion Blog is about a clothing item many of us take for granted.  We throw it on when we need it most and toss it when we are through, but yet it is still always there for us.   We are talking about one of the most universally unisex pieces of clothing that exists, and probably carries the most memories for you throughout the years, as you may have bought your favorite one at a concert, sports event, or maybe even the last time you went grocery shopping.  The one, the only… the sweatshirt, which is also sometimes referred to as a hoodie!

Although this superb garment can be dated back to the Medieval Europe, where monks rocked out their hoodies to show their devout religious reverence through their distinguished attire, the actual first hooded sweatshirt was produced by Champion in the 1930s, and primarily marketed to those workers in upstate New York who had to endure freezing temperatures.  

Later the hoodie itself created an impact on the fashion culture in the 1970s through the development of the Hip-Hop culture and was most emblematic and easily recognized in the film Rocky. 

The rise of the hoodies continued to grow throughout the 1990s as it not only became relevant as an academic symbol, but also thrived as a trend through the Western US, and is a huge staple in pretty much every American’s wardrobe today.

This clothing item is A+++ in my grade book for fashion expertise.  Not only do you get the comfort of throwing it on, and going out the door without a care, but you also get to show your spirit on your sleeve, whatever way that may be.  Sometimes, it may even come naturally.

Other times we use sweatshirts as a form of showing your affection for someone, especially on dates.

News, Notes, and Observations

• You couldn't ask for a better defensive start than the ones displayed by Cardiac Arrest and DCOMB this season. Both teams have yet to allow a run in their first two victories. And it's not that they've been playing scrubs. DCOMB has shut out Foul Balls and Rumspringa. CA has blanked The Situation and The Jungle. It'll be interesting to see how long both teams can keep this up. 
• Kick Ass nearly joined these two teams in the '0 RA' club. Heading into the 5th inning, they were tied 0-0 against The Situation. After Sitch loaded the bases, George Bunch's single drove earned the walk off win in the 5th.
• Who would've thought that it would take The Situation 10 innings before they scored their first run of the season? 
• By the way, I predicted the 1-0 win for Cardiac Arrest on last week's 3 Up 3 Down. Thanks to Jill Simms' great running catch of a very deep Geoff Morehart blast in the 5th, the prediction held. 
• The Foul Balls were held completely hitless in their last game, but were determined to reverse that in week 3. Curtis Faubion's triple home run cleared the bases and the defense held the KILFs to a single run. 
• Todd Schimmel and Manny Zapata helped lead DCOMB over Rumspringa with a couple of hard strikes that drove in runs. These two are developing into one of the most prolific 4-5 kicking combos in the league. Although, Todd's status is questionable for week 4. In addition to his healing collarbone injury, he appeared to have hurt his lower leg sliding into home on Wednesday.

• While we talked a lot about defensive battles above, the Five Toe / Smokin' Bunts game was anything but a pitcher's duel. Sixteen combined runs were scored between the two, with the Bunts come away with the shoot out win. Casey Frye was doing her best Pete Rose impression, diving head first into home twice during the contest. Maybe we should start calling her Casey Hustle? 
• Huge night for the PBJT franchise. With an inexperienced team, many pundits predicted the Jelly to finish in the bottom of the table this season. But the rookies seem to be picking up the game at a much quicker pace than expected and the veterans are providing a consistent stability. Really impressed with their 2-1-1 start. Hats off to captain Christina Obershaw. 
• I'm 0-2 in kick away situations since posting my kick away tips on the blog. I am officially declaring myself jinxed.

I Logo Therefore I Am

Logos, logos, and more logos! Where should I begin?  Every great team, franchise, or brand has a recognizable logo that helps with not only marketing, but also affiliation and recognition.  This week
WAKA Fashion is focusing on logos.  In fact, some of the best teams in the league have some pretty phenomenal logos.  Here are some of the most recognized from Smoking Bunts, Foul Balls, and Hot Dogs and Tacos.

Even if your team does not have a logo yet, don’t feel bad.  Some of the most famous logos were created by accident, so that means you still have time to think of yours, or stumble upon an amazing idea to represent yourselves. In fact, Gerald Holtom, who invented the peace sign, started this well-known symbol as a self-portrait.

Other recognizable logos, like the CBS logo, created by William Golden, were made simply by happenstance as he proved this in basically ripping off 19^th Century religious drawings.  

So if you do want to get creative with yours, now that you know you would be that much more awesome for doing so, you can check out these well-known logos for inspiration on your creative flair process.   Here you can see hidden symbols creating self-advertisements for the following brands:

Baskin Robbins number 31 in the logo represents its own the 31 delicious flavors.

Fed Ex has a hidden arrow between the E and x to represent the speed of delivery.

The Tostitos logo was created from two people sharing a chip and a bowl of salsa.

Now these logos weren’t just created overnight, so don’t beat yourself up if you can’t think of one right away.  There is a creative thought process involved that is known as the Logo evolution.  To prove this, the Nike “Swoosh” has one of the best stories in evolvement as the design was created in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, who was a graphic design student at Portland State University.  As she was approached to provide design ideas at the time for a rate of $2 per hour, she submitted a total bill of $35 for her work on the logo, and was also given a gold Swoosh ring and an envelope filled with Nike stock as well.  Not too shabby.

The Nike SWOOSH logo itself represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek Goddess of victory, Nike, who was the source of inspiration for many great and courageous warriors. According to legends, a Greek would say, “When we go to battle and win, we say it is Nike.” Originally, the mark was referred to as ‘the strip’ but was later changed to ‘Swoosh’ to describe the fibers used in Nike shoes. In the spring of 1972, the first shoe with the Nike SWOOSH Logo was introduced; thus, the evolution of Nike.  What will your inspiration be?

Overall, I think more teams in the league should get in on the logo bandwagon, as it has proven to not only provide comradery amongst teammates, but also create a distinguished recognition for that team that can’t be missed.  So moral of the story is, get your flair up so we don’t have to talk about this anymore.

News, Notes, & Observations

• We often talk about DCOMB's Mark Flores here in the blog and on 3 Up 3 Down. He's got a reputation as being one of the toughest pitchers in the league. Well on Wednesday, against the Foul Balls, he and Lisa Rock made history by pitching a complete 5 inning perfect game. 15 Foulies came up to the plate. 15 Foulies were retired. I've been playing WAKA VA Peninsula since the Fall of 2007, and to my knowledge, no one has ever had a 5 inning perfect game before (there have been 3 or 4 inning mercy/time shortened perfect games). It's just so difficult to lock down a kickball team completely. Amazing job by Flores, Rock, and the rest of DCOMB's defense. 
• Todd Schimmel broke his collarbone this summer in VA Patriot. You think he'd take some time off from kickball? Nope. While he's limited defensively, dude doesn't need a working shoulder to kick bombs. The slugger picked up where he left off last year, crushing a 2 run homer in DCOMB's win. 
• In 31 WAKA VA Peninsula games over 3 seasons, The Situation has earned a 27-0-4 record. They had yet to be defeated on a Wednesday night... until they played Cardiac Arrest. The defending Wentworth Trophy® champions played outstanding defense and capitalized on some aggressive base running by Josh Carr and Ryan Warner to earn the big opening night W. All offseason, CA heard the comments from people discrediting their spring championship as a fluke. With the DC circuit tournament being moved to the same date as our playoffs, many of the top teams were out of contention. This lead some to comment that there should be an asterisks put next to Cardiac's name when it's engraved. Granted, this was just an early regular season game, so it only means so much, but definitely a big statement to refute those who claim Cardiac's championship isn't "legit". They (we) are for real. 
• PBJT made their return to VA Peninsula action after 2 years and had a double header. In the 6:30 game, the Foul Balls took advantage of the relative inexperience of the Jelly (8 out of the 19 players on the roster are new to WAKA) to put up 7 runs. However, the team gelled as the night went on and earned a hard fought draw against HDT. Scott Harrell saved the game when he made a crucial throw home to prevent a Taco from scoring the winning run. Exciting way to end the game! 
• Fireballs captain TJ Guarry promised that the team would have a new look. I don't know if anyone expected it to be this:

• In the first inning, KA's Lisa Fabila caught a ball and quickly relayed it to Wes McClain, who nailed The Jungle's Randy Devlin at the plate. That would be the closest that WTTJ would come to scoring as they Kick Ass defense was on fleek from there on out. (Did I use that right?). Journey Thomas reached base with two outs late int he game. Eric Stevens came through in the clutch a few kickers later to drive her in. That's all the runs KA would need on the night.
• Dwight Polka had a big night for Five Toe Death Kick. He drove in 5 out of the 6 runs, including a long home run, in their victory over the KILFs. 
• The Rumspringa / Smokin Bunts game was a good one. I got to do some score keeping for it. Both teams played with a good, focused, intensity. The catchers for both teams stood out specifically for some really nice plays. In the end, the Bunts made a couple of mistakes and that was the difference.

Random Thoughts & Observations

We’re starting to see KPGM really grow. They took a giant leap forward with their victory over Rumspringa… But then a small step back in their next game, a 2-2 tie with Five Toe Death Kick, a game in which they were heavy favorites. Just goes to show you that any given Wednesday, anything can happen. Can’t sleep on any of these teams out here.

Speaking of Five Toe, a great recovery after a disappointing loss to the Hot Dogs & Tacos earlier in the night. The Death Kickers showed very good poise in holding on to a tie. KPGM was pressing hard in the 5^th to get the walk off, but they held on. 

It may not have been one of the most graceful plays of the night, but it was definitely my favorite. Late in the 5TDK/KPGM game a line drive came directly to Hannah Rosinski. While absorbing most of the impact in the face, she was able to secure the catch. The pure joy in her face (as well as in her teammates) as she celebrated with the ball over her head was awesome. Made me smile to see everyone enjoying themselves in the moment.

One final KPGM note: Their 2^ndBasewoman, Lanie Deppe, looks like she’s going to be an impact player. You can tell she’s an athlete and already carries herself like a veteran kickballer. Her putout to end the Rumspringa rally in the 5^th was very impressive. She’s got an arm. 

Remember last week when I dropped the stat showing how rare 0-0 ties are in the history of the league? Well wouldn’t you know it. Bizarro did it again, this time drawing JFK. The 10^th time two teams have played without scoring a run in 1,005 regular season VA Peninsula games. 

It took them 9 innings into the season, but The Itch offense finally woke up. Like a sleeping giant, this team is stacked with tough outs. Joe Preseault, Jimmy Wilcox, Curtis Faubion, Frank Council, Will Monroe, and Pat Smith all strung together base hits before the first out was recorded in the 5^thinning against Kick Ass. Jamie LaCrosse also added an RKI. They have the ability to do some damage.

The Smoking Bunts defense was a lot more reliable this week. They bounced back from an 7-3 loss in the opener to an impressive shut out victory over Eat My Short Kick. Andrew Schlichte's bunt home run was all the offense the Smoking Bunts would need. Doesn’t someone owe him something for that? 

The next run the Fireballs score will be the first. They’ve been held scoreless their first two games. Now they’ll have to contend with the aforementioned Smokin’ Bunts D that was impressive last night. I think they can get the job done though. 

The KILFs are pretty hyped to be starting out 2-0, as they should. What I don’t understand though is why they make their “Player of the Game” dress up like a hobo? Hey, who am I to argue? It’s working.

Todd Schimmel did work on both sides of the ball. Some big RKIs and great defense at charger lead Hot Dogs to their first win.

Pitching Dez?! What happened? We need you all here every week now. You brought so much to the table last week. Don’t let us down.

Pro-Tip: Don’t try to tag up on DCOMB’s Nick Schmidt when he’s 75 feet or less from home. He will gun you. Lesson learned the hard way for me.

Shout out to Cardiac Arrests’ Marilee Columbus, driving in runs off of one of the elite pitchers in the league, Mark Flores. Well done!

Ballsagna Routs Battlestar

     Yep! Put a fork in us! We. are. DONE! The Ballsagna team is finally cooked to perfection, and just in time to force feed Battestar their first lost of the season.  The Battle of the Balls ended in a 11-3 rout in this friendly rival game. Apparently it was a surprise to many since the podcast predicted that Battlestar would win it by 1 run, but Chef Coach George Kiriazidis got all his ingredients in order, seasoned them up, wrapped them in bacon, and got them ready to play. (Wait, hold the bacon...)

      The first inning ended in a draw as both teams scored only one run. Michael Machie, of course, scored for Battlestar, and he always makes it look easy no matter who he's playing against. The throw from 1st to 3rd was a little off and behind Nicole Plesha Graziano. Tim "Get the f*** outa my way" Peatz was there to take the throw and ran over Nicole like a freight train to throw it home, but it was too late.  Mike already slipped in for the score.  (Hmmmm, let me shorten that nick a little bit...I shall call him Tim "Beatdown " Peatz) The team is growing suspicious of Tim's actions towards Nicole.  It's the second time he has injured her this season AND THEY ARE ON THE SAME TEAM! The coach has given him a warning and its reported that the next step is to fine him $5000 for every time he makes Nicole cuss. I imagine he'll be homeless soon...

     Back to the game! Mike Harvey was served up as an appetizer to score one for Ballsagna. In fact, he scored every time he came up to kick. (That's 3 courses if anyone is counting...) Eat THAT!

     The Second and third innings were tight, but Ballsagna inched forward in the lead turning in a few more runs, then it was a freaking slide fest into home plate by the 4th inning. Two runners came in within seconds of each other, sliding in for scores while Battlestar tried to tag them out, but missed both tags within inches.  Both Patrick Jones and Karl "with a K" Schultz kept pouring it on (spicing it up?) as they scored 4 RKI's EACH for the night.  Dennis "Sgt. Leo" Leonard made his debut and kicked 2 for 2. What a bad a$$!! The entire team had an on base average of almost 70% for the night! How's that for a main course!

     For desert, the last inning had Battlestar fired up for a come back! The bottom of the lineup didn't produce too well until they rounded back to the top with Mike up to kick again.  With 2 outs, he kicked a nice fly to center where it was missed, but it was brought in before he could run to 2nd. Jason Weiszek then kicked a WHOPPER to center field where it went over Brian Neal's head for an almost fantastic grab, but fell to the ground for a miss.  The ball was relayed in, but not before Jason ran in for a 2 run homer bringing Battlestar's score to 3.

   Let's add a little cheese and talk defense...Andy Tapley and Jason Weiszek  took the mound for Battlestar with some mean pitches.  George Kiriazidis and John Vrooman added some sizzle to the mound as well for Ballsagna. "Vroom Vroom" pitched another foul out for a total of 3 this season.  One for each game played so far. Rack em up, boys!

    Let's see....lots of catches made by both teams in the outfield.  One particular standout was a diving catch made by Battlestar's Christina Race out in right field.  She was running hard to her left and caught it right before it hit the ground for an awesome ESPN highlight reel play! Duh Nu Nuh, Duh Nu Nuh!!! (I interrupt this blog for a special announcement:  I, Silent Killer, recruited Christina into the league and take full credit for that catch.  You're welcome.  Back to your regularly scheduled blog...)

     Mark "Rabbit" Thompson came up with a unique 'rabbit' grab at the catcher position.  The ball was kicked for a small pop up in front of the kicker (perhaps to foul it away? I'm not sure.), but the runner didn't advance and Mark kind of went around and in front of the runner to balance that thing on his finger tips  for a smooth catch and finished off with a dramatic pirouette!  Ok, the pirouette thing didn't happen, but it would have been a nice finishing move. (Are you taking notes, Rabbit??) 

     So that's that!  Ballsagna takes the 11-3 win and knocks Battlestar out of 1st place.
