CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer - Thank you!

What a weekend! I am absolutely blown away by the spirit and generosity of the Virginia kickball community. The kickball was the "what" but cancer was the "why" and together we raised a total of $16,000 for The Sentara Foundation!!! This money will directly support local cancer patients in their fight against this terrible disease.

I got a lot of people to thank and recognize (and of course some plugs, naturally) so I'll try to be as brief as possible.

First of all, congratulations to BREASTIGE, for taking home the Kim Merritt Cup! They battled a tough single elimination field and the elements to earn the championship! Well done!

We had several teams go above and beyond to do additional fundraising. Whether it was swag, jello shots, food, or raffles these teams found fun and creative ways to boost our total and make a bigger impact. Let's recognize the top fundraisers:

  • Kickin Kate Barlows - $129
  • Here for the Fireball - $189
  • F3B - $211
  • Hakuna Ma Tatas - $647
  • #EFFCANCER - $917
  • Prestige After Dark - $1,000

And our WORLD CLUBWAKA KICKS CANCER CHARITY CHAMPS.... F.E.A.R. with a whopping $10,500!!!

AMAZING job! Thank you to Amy Logan, Talbert Dunn, Danielle Kulis, Sara Shahan, and the entire squad for all of the hard work and hustle. Truly incredible!

Now some other thanks in rapid fire:

  • Thank you to Hampton Parks & Rec for allowing us the space to play
  • Thank you to our CLUBWAKA Hampton Roads staff for helping to produce and support a great event. Special shoutout to Ryan Kiel, Curtis Blauch, and Troy Carter.
  • Thank you to all of our refs - both the head refs and the volunteer line refs throughout the day. This tournament doesn't run smoothly without their effort!
  • Thank you to Brannan Blascak Photography & Design for capturing some AMAZING photos.  If you haven't seen them, please visit the CLUBWAKA Facebook page and check them out (smash that like button while you're there too!). Feel free to tag/share/download as much as you'd like.
  • Shout out to PBR for throwing a banger of a party for us on Saturday night.
  • Thank you to Grouchy B's Food Truck for providing a delicious food option and for taking good care of our refs and staff.
  • Thank you, Shelly Dana, for all of the help at the checkin and hoodie sales
  • Thank you to Brian Lijana and his boys for making sure that we left no trace (aka evidence) at the park. Those boys were working hard on trash duty!
  • Thank you to everyone who offered and lent a hand throughout the day. No matter how big or small the task was, we had no shortage of players willing to help and that all added up.
  • Last but certainly not least, thank you to all of our team captains. The backbone of any successful league or event is the captains and we couldn't have asked for a better batch this year. If you haven't already done so, be sure to DM your captain and tell them thank you for being awesome!!

There is absolutely no doubt that I'm forgetting someone. And if I have, please charge it to the head and not the heart. I'm just overwhelmed and appreciative of all of the support this weekend!

Please check out and support our generous sponsors for the 2021 CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer Kickball Tournament

A few other items:

  • Save the date: As always, we'll be playing and partying the 3rd weekend in October. It's going to be hard to top this year, but we're going to try on October 15th, 2022! Join the Facebook Event
  • January Sports Leagues are now open! We have Winter kickball leagues in Hampton, Virginia Beach and Richmond. open for registration now at early bird prices. If you want to try a different activity other than kickball (weird, yeah, I know) than CLUBWAKA also offers indoor volleyball, bowling, and dodgeball leagues as well. See all the open activities at clubwaka.com.

I think.... that's all I got. What an awesome weekend. Thank you again to everyone for joining the CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer Tournament!

CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer - 2019 Tournament Guide

Thank you all for joining the 2019 CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer Charity Kickball Tournament. We're excited to have you all be a part of this tremendous event. We've been hosting this tournament every October since 2013, and at 18 teams and 280 players, this is officially the largest CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer yet! I'm so proud of this kickball community for pulling together to play and party for a special cause.

Within this post will be all of the information you need for this weekend. Please take some time to read through it. For any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at brent@clubwaka.com.

EVENT STAFF

To start, I want to introduce myself and my team. Our goal is to help make this an overwhelmingly positive experience for you all, so if you have anything we can help with please let us know.

In addition to the above mentioned individuals, we have several other volunteers helping as well. This event would not be possible without their efforts.

SCHEDULE & STANDINGS

The schedule and standings can be found on this Google Doc. Please bookmark it as the results will be updated here throughout the day. A few notes on the schedule:
  • Each team had 3 pool play games. The top-8 performing teams after the pool play round will advance to a single elimination round beginning at 3 PM.
  • During bye rounds, each team will need to provide 2-3 refs for the games assigned. We will have some ref volunteers to help lighten the load, however, please be prepared to send up to 3.
  • Games are played under standard CLUBWAKA Kickball Rules.
  • Games are up to 7 innings long. No new inning may begin after 50 minutes. All innings started must be played in it's entirety, unless the home team is winning during their at-kick.
  • Game times are listed on the schedule. If both teams and refs are available early and ready to roll, please don't feel like you have to wait until the start time. Anything we can do to get ahead of schedule is a bonus.

ROSTERS

Want to see who's on what team? Rosters can be found on the main Schedule & Standings doc underneath the 'rosters' tab.

BRIARFIELD PARK

The park is located at 1560 Briarfield Rd, Hampton. The park is owned and operated by the Hampton Parks & Rec and is subject to all applicable laws and regulations set by the city.

The main point of reference is to alcohol. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on city park property. It’s important that all individuals be responsible and avoid openly drinking. We don’t want to do anything that would put our event at risk this year or in the future. If you choose to break this law, it is at your own risk. We just ask that you be smart, conceal, and don't leave the evidence in the trash cans. Be sure to take all of your related trash with you. Teams will be provided with trash bags by CLUBWAKA.

Pets are allowed at the park as long as they're on a leash, you clean up after them, and they aren't psychopaths.

CHECK-IN

Please give yourself some extra time when arriving so you can check-in at HQ and receive a wristband and other gifts courtesy of our sponsors.

ABOUT THE CHARITY

Contributions to the Sentara Cancer Network Mission Fund assist patients who are in need of medications and supplies not covered by insurance. Cancer education pamphlets, books, support group meetings, and other supportive programs (art therapy, education classes, etc.) are also funded with these generous contributions.

This year we are focusing on day of tasks - winners in EACH category will win a $100 bar tab at PBR for Saturday night!!! Soooo, if you win in fundraising and fun - that’s $200 to spend at PBR!

In addition to the proceeds from the registrations, we really want to encourage teams  to fund-raise during the tournament! Anna will give each captain an envelope to place their money raised throughout the day in - that will be returned at the end of the day and tallied to see how many points you will get! For a full list of missions please check out this doc. Results will be tracked on the "F Cancer" tab on the Schedule & Rosters doc.

Not participating in fund-raising? That's ok! Be sure to bring some cash though if you want to support others. Word on the streets is that #EffCancer will be giving away jell-o shots and crushes in exchange for donations.

Can’t wait to play some kickball AND have some fun raising some money while we are at it! Questions? Reach out to Anna Rigg at arigg@clubwaka.com.

AFTER-PARTY @ PBR HAMPTON, 7:30 PM

We're going blue for the official after-party of the CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer charity kickball tournament! All active members of a CLUBWAKA league & participants in the charity tournament are invited to join us for a party at Hampton's hottest night club, PBR!

CLUBWAKA guests will have the private bar upstairs reserved with a food buffet, no cover charge, and your first drink is on us. Please RSVP on this event so PBR has an approximate number to prepare for.

If it wasn't clear from the title, the theme for this party is 'Blue'. Rock your best blue outfits. In the spirit of the CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer weekend, we want to drive awareness of cancer. Dark blue is the official color of Colon Cancer. To find out more info about colerectal cancer, check out https://fightcolorectalcancer.org.

CLUBWAKA encourages everyone to drink responsibly. If you have a few too many, please use Uber promo code e7wv25u for $5 off your safe ride home. event.uber.com/claim?code=e7wv25u

SPONSORS

Thank you to our proud sponsors. Without their support, this event would not be possible.

SHIRTS

Team shirts will be given to your captain the morning of the event.

HOODIES

If you pre-ordered a CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer hoodie, you can pick it up at the HQ tent. If you did not pre-order a hoodie a very limited number of hoodies will be available for sale for $30 each. All proceeds benefit The Sentara Cancer Network. Thank you to KBS Apparel for the generous support!

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

We hope everyone has a safe day of kickball on Saturday, but in the event that someone does get hurt, Tidewater Orthopedics will be providing on-site medical professionals to help support and aid our players. If the injury is serious, Tidewater Ortho is the best place to go. They are the preferred provider for Sentara and many of the top colleges go to Tidewater Ortho to get their athletes back on the field. The best part is that their Same Day Sports Medicine clinic will guarantee that you are seen quickly.

The athletic trainer will be located at the HQ tent if you're in need.

FOOD TRUCK

Lunch options are limited at Briarfield Park but fortunately, we will have an on-site food option for the event. The STUFT Food Truck will be serving award-winning tacos, burritos, and more during the afternoon. Don't forget the Haas Sauce!

For more information on the Stuft Food Truck and to check out their menu, please visit stuftstreetfood.comhttp://www.stuftstreetfood.com/ or like them on Facebook.

SOCIAL MEDIA

We encourage you to join and to like/follow our social media pages and use the #CLUBWAKAKicksCancer, #CLUBWAKA and #EffCancer when posting about Saturday's tournament. FOR THE 'GRAM!

THANK YOU

At the risk of being repetitive, I want to sincerely thank you all for joining us for this event. It's by far the highlight of my year and I'm so excited to have 18 teams playing together on Saturday. If there is anything I missed in this post or you need anything at all, please let me know.

2017 CLUBWAKA MidAtlantic Kickball Regionals - Info Packet

Welcome to the 2017 CLUBWAKA MidAtlantic Regional Kickball Tournament! Thank you all for joining us for a tremendous weekend of kickball and parties. I want to take the time to go over a lot of information to prepare you for a fun event.

EVENT STAFF

There will be an HQ tent set up in a central location by the concessions/bathrooms. This will be the location of the check-in station, but also where you will go if you have any questions or issues that come up throughout the day.

  • TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR: Brent Wentworth (brent@kickball.com)
  • SOCIAL COORDINATOR/CHARITY LEAD: Fagel Baer (fagel@kickball.com)

Don't we look friendly and willing to assist?

CHECK IN

All players must check-in with CLUBWAKA at the HQ desk prior to competing. Every player will receive a wristband (needed for the party) and will have their name confirmed on the roster. The check-in table will be centrally located near the bathrooms between all three fields.

SCHEDULE

The schedules are now online at the respective event websites
  • REGIONAL FORMAT: Each team will play four pool play games beginning at 9 AM. At 2:45, the top four teams with advance to a single elimination round to determine the champion.
  • CHARITY FORMAT: Each team will play four pool play games beginning at 10 AM. At 3:30 PM, the top two teams will compete for the championship.
  • The length of games during pool play will be no more than 5 innings, and no new innings will start after the 50-minute mark. Be sure to start your games on time (or early when applicable), avoid excessive warm ups in between innings, provide backstops, and keep the game moving at a good pace to maximize innings played.
  • The length of games during elimination play will be a standard 5 innings, with extra innings as needed to determine a winner. Games exceeding 90 total minutes may be subject to a time restriction at the discretion of the tournament director.
  • Fields 4 and 5 will be the featured fields for the ASBN (Amateur Sports Broadcasting Network) live stream coverage. Because we have the live stream, we will be rotating fields more often to allow for each regional team to play in front of the cameras. Extra time has been built into the schedule to allow for travel, but it's also imperative that we stay within the time frame allocated.

REFS

We have paid refs for each field, however, in the event that we have some cancellations, teams may be required to provide line refs for their byes. Team captains will be notified of this status in the morning.

RULES

The tournaments will be run under standard CLUBWAKA Kickball Rules, with the following exceptions:
  • Home team in Pool Play will be determined using RPS; Home team in the Elimination Round will be determined by the higher seed's preference.
  • In the event of a tie, the following steps will be taken (head to head, total wins, runs allowed, run differential)
  • Any walk issued without throwing at least one strike or foul will result in two bases being awarded to the kicker.
  • If the third and final out of an inning is recorded due to improper positioning of a base runner (see rule 10.03 or 1.06d), that will conclude the plate appearance for the player at kick and the subsequent kicker will lead off that team's next inning of kicking.
  • There are no warnings for position infractions. Any "encroachment" will result in a free base for the kicker or the offense can decline the penalty and take the result of the play.
  • NEW RULE FOR 2017: Only 3 foul balls are allowed per kicker. This has been reduced from the allowable 4 in league play.
  • NEW RULE FOR 2017: There are no knee ball fouls. Contact with the ball below the hip is considered a legal kick.

REGIONAL PAYOUT/PRIZES

We aren't just playing for a trophy! The winners of the 2017 CLUBWAKA MidAtlantic Regional will receive a payout of $1,350. The runner-ups will receive $675. The payments are divided evenly among the players on the team and will be issued by check within 4-6 weeks following the event. Winners can also elect to receive their payout earlier in the form of "CLUBWAKA Bucks", which are good for any CLUBWAKA activity.

The top four teams will also qualify to attend the 2017 CLUBWAKA Founders Cup World Championship in Las Vegas! For more information on Founders Cup and WAKAPalooza Week, be sure to visit kickball.com/founderscup.

ASBN LIVE STREAM

*GAMES LIVE STREAMED AND RECORDED*
All regional tournaments will feature professionally produced live streamed games provided by ASBN (same company that did Founders Cup). The Tournament will have two "featured fields" (fields 4 and 5), where a full video and live stream production will take place from the first pool play game all the way to the championship.

The field and game schedule was made to rotate almost every team through the "feature fields." **If your game is on a featured field, you'll need to make an extra copy of your kicking lineup for the camera production team before you start your game.**

The link to the live stream will be emailed and posted to social media first thing Saturday morning once it's all set-up.

For a sample look at the production value of ABSN, see the youtube link here:

You'll be able to watch the full games later in the week, but you'll have to pay a fee online to see them right away.   If you can wait about 45 days, we'll be able to upload them on our tournament youtube channel.

Thank you all again for joining us for the 2017 CLUBWAKA MidAtlantic Regional and Charity Tournaments. I'm looking forward to seeing you all this weekend! Please let me know if there are any questions not covered above and I'll be happy to help!

CLUBWAKA Brewery Bus Tour - Important Info

Thank you all for joining us on the inaugural CLUBWAKA Brewery Bus Tour! We're really excited to have everyone join us for this cool event. I want to take a moment to go over some information to help everyone prepare for a great time on Saturday.

Today is the day!!! A couple of additional notes and then a reminder of the schedule info.

DRIVE SAFE: We are going to drink a lot of beer today. A LOT. Make sure you have a good plan for getting home. A reminder that we purchased some Uber codes to help. Please use the following Uber codes to help pay for your safe ride home.

FOOD/ENTERTAINMENT: Each brewery we visit will have some food and some have live music.
  • Oozlefinch: Authentic German Food Truck
  • O'Connor: Captain Crabby
  • Coelacanth: Waffletina
  • The Bold Mariner: Lobsters2u & A Bite Of Main -- There will also be live music by Julz Gat
  • Oozlefinch: When we return there will be live music by Brian Shultz

SCHEDULE
  • 1 PM: Check-In @ Oozlefinch (81 Patch Rd, Hampton)
    • We will have a table set up where we will check you in and give you a wristband.
    • SPECIAL: 10% off all beers
  • 1:50 PM: BOARD BUS
  • 2:30 PM (estimated): STOP 2 @ O'Connor Brewing
    • 15% off all pints
    • Our gathering spot will be in the "lounge" area
    • Any "wristband only" members or individuals that chose not to check-in in Hampton can get their wristbands here.
  • 3:25 PM: BOARD BUS

  • 4:40 PM (estimated): BOARD BUS
  • 4:55 PM (estimated): STOP 4 @ Bold Mariner
    • $1 off all Pints
  • 6 PM: BOARD BUS - Travel back to Oozlefinch
SCHEDULE NOTES:
  • We will do our best to stay within the scheduled time frames, but all of these are estimated time frames. Travel time between each venue will vary so we'll make some adjustments on the fly. Our goal is to make sure that we have a solid 45-60 minutes at each brewery before.
  • With that said, it's important that when time is called that we move efficiently to the bus and get ready to board. I don't think it'll take us too long to board the bus. We won't have any TSA screenings or metal detectors, so when it's time to go, we can go!
  • When it is time to move on to the next brewery, we'll make an announcement. To help keep track of everyone, we recommend that everyone organizes into small groups of 4-5 people to practice the buddy system. This way, it'll be easier for us to account for everyone, since we'll be able to go directly to each group to get a quick count. If you have a group of friends, please let me know who should be put together. If you don't have a group, let me know and I'll match you up with others... For those familiar with the kickball.com system, you can create your friend groups from your profile as well. The last thing we want is to leave someone in the bathroom of Bold Mariner while we drive back to Hampton!!!
BUS RULES:
  • NO alcohol is permitted on the bus. I know, I know, but we have 4+ hours of brewery hopping so we can save the boozing for the stops.
  • Please do not leave trash on the bus. Anyone who gets out of control or destructive may be denied entry onto the bus. (CLUBWAKA will get charged for any excessive cleaning or damage, and we don't want that happening)
  • Neither the bus company or CLUBWAKA is responsible for any lost or misplaced items. Please do not leave any personal property on the bus.
  • The coolest kids sit in the back.
CHARITY
A portion of every seat sold will benefit the American Cancer Society through our Relay for Life team, CLUBWAKA KICKS CANCER. Thank you all for your support. Together, the funds we raise will help provide support for vital cancer research and help those fighting this terrible disease. For more information about Relay for Life and to join our team, please click here.

ADDITIONAL SEATS: There is still room for more to join us, as of this e-mail we are not quite at capacity. If you have any friends that are interested, tell them to sign up! We'll keep registration open until Saturday or whenever we hit our max (55). kickball.com/vabrewerybustour

SOCIAL MEDIA: If you haven't already, please join our Facebook event and be sure to check-in during the afternoon. Let's give everyone on Facebook some serious FOMO. Also, if you're using Twitter or Instagram, please add the hashtag #CLUBWAKABreweryTour, so we can find your posts and give you some likes. You want likes, right?

For any questions, feedback, or if there is anything I can help you with, please don't hesitate to reach out. As the event coordinator, my goal is for everyone to have a great time together on Saturday. I really appreciate you all joining us for the first ever Brewery Bus Tour!

Balls & Dolls Post-Tourney Wrapup

What a week! Thank you to everyone who slogged through the mud with us on Saturday. It was an awesome day of kickball and certainly a new experience for many of us. Together, we raised over $2,000 to fight cancer, and that's the most important thing.

Who am I kidding? The most important thing was the games! And there were some great ones! Congratulations to our champions, ISH (women's division) and THE SCRUBZ (men's division). Both teams played outstanding and deserve the medals.

Brad Kirby was out with his camera and took a ton of fantastic pics. In fact, I think this album might contain the most Facebook profile photos of any album we've ever posted. Well done, Brad. Thank you for documenting all of our non-coed shenanigans yesterday!

Big thanks to everyone who reffed this weekend, especially our volunteers, Jeremy Smithey, Mike Ottman, Rich Sharp, and James Maxlow. They gave up their Saturday to help support the event, and I'm super grateful for their help.

After the games, we had a great turnout at County Grill. Thank you to everyone who came out and socialized and a shout-out to the County Grill staff for taking excellent care of us!

We hope you all enjoyed playing. We're going to go ahead and pencil in March 31st, 2018 for the VA Balls & Dolls II. But you don't have wait until then to join us. In fact, we have another great co-ed charity tournament coming up on May 6th in Virginia Beach. Registration is open now! For a full list of our spring leagues and one-day events, please visit kickball.com/hamptonroads.

Thank you all once again for making this a very fun and successful day of kickball for a great cause!

Thank you for joining the inaugural CLUBWAKA Balls & Dolls Kickball Classic! We have a great day of kickball in store with 6 men's teams and 5 women's teams battling for supremacy. But most importantly, together we will have raised over $1,750 for the American Cancer Society.

Please take a few moments to read through the following information before Saturday's event.

SCHEDULE

The full schedule can be found online at kickball.com/vaballsanddolls. A couple of notes:
  • Males: Each team is scheduled for 3 'pool play' games. After the round robin series is completed, the teams with the top four records will advance to the elimination round at 3 PM.
  • Females: Each women's team will play 4 'pool play' games. The two top teams will then advance to the championship at 3 PM.
  • We do have some volunteer refs, but not enough to cover each game. During the rounds when you are idle, your team will be asked to provide refs to help cover gaps.
  • Games are 5 innings long or 50 minutes. Whichever comes first. No new inning may begin after the 50-minute mark.

ROSTERS

The rosters for each team can be found on this google doc.

GOSNOLD'S HOPE PARK

All games are played Gosnolds Hope Park (901 E. Little Back River Rd, Hampton). A couple of notes about park policies.
  • This is a public park and the consumption of alcohol is prohibited. If you choose to do so, you assume all of the associated risks. We only ask that you be responsible, conceal any drinks, and do NOT leave your trash in the cans at the park (bring trash bags!). Failure to do this may lead to your dismissal from the tournament without refund.
  • The park is dog-friendly. Please have a leash and make sure your dog doesn't viciously attack anyone or poop on the pitcher's mound.
  • Below is a map of the park layout. NOTE: The field setup is subject to change based on conditions in the AM.

POST GAME SOCIAL

After the games, County Grill is the official post-game clubhouse for the Balls & Dolls. Participants will enjoy $6 Bud Light pitchers, $13 wing buckets, and $5 appetizers. The winning teams will each earn a $100 tab to celebrate with!

RULES

The games will use the Official WAKA Kickball rules. The only change will be in the number of players allowed on the field. There will be a maximum of 10 women in the field and 9 men.

ABOUT THE CHARITY

Proceeds from this event will benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. The funds we raise will help the ACS make an impact both locally and globally in the fight against cancer. For more information and to join our fundraising team, please visit main.acsevents.org/goto/CLUBWAKAKicksCancer

Thank you once again for joining us for this unique event. I'm really looking forward to all the kickball action. If anyone needs anything or has any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. See you, Saturday!

CLUBWAKA Players Spent This Weekend Raising Money to Fight Cancer & Help Kids

Namaste.

Just one week before Christmas and CLUBWAKA Hampton Roads members were in the giving spirit. It started on Friday night with the Inaugural Winter Wonderland Charity Bar Crawl. Over 60 revelers took over Downtown Hampton, enjoying great specials and company at The Grey Goose, Stillwater Tavern, Venture Kitchen, and Taphouse. Proceeds from the wristband sales raised $325 for the Boys & Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula and several participants also brought toys with them to donate to needy families. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this great event.

There were some pretty cool toys donated!

The giving didn't stop there. On Sunday afternoon, CLUBWAKA kickball and volleyball member Jillian Simms held a charity yoga class at the Tribal Yoga Studio in Hampton. Several people came out including over a dozen VA Peninsula kickballers. Not only did Jill's class relax their minds and work their bodies, but it raised $510 for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life!

I continue to be blown away by the selflessness and caring of our community. This weekend is yet another reminder that it's not just about kid's sports and drinking beer. We are at our strongest when we come together for a purpose. Thank you all for your support of these great charity events.
