CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer - 2019 Tournament Guide

Thank you all for joining the 2019 CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer Charity Kickball Tournament. We're excited to have you all be a part of this tremendous event. We've been hosting this tournament every October since 2013, and at 18 teams and 280 players, this is officially the largest CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer yet! I'm so proud of this kickball community for pulling together to play and party for a special cause.

Within this post will be all of the information you need for this weekend. Please take some time to read through it. For any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at brent@clubwaka.com.

EVENT STAFF

To start, I want to introduce myself and my team. Our goal is to help make this an overwhelmingly positive experience for you all, so if you have anything we can help with please let us know.

In addition to the above mentioned individuals, we have several other volunteers helping as well. This event would not be possible without their efforts.

SCHEDULE & STANDINGS

The schedule and standings can be found on this Google Doc. Please bookmark it as the results will be updated here throughout the day. A few notes on the schedule:
  • Each team had 3 pool play games. The top-8 performing teams after the pool play round will advance to a single elimination round beginning at 3 PM.
  • During bye rounds, each team will need to provide 2-3 refs for the games assigned. We will have some ref volunteers to help lighten the load, however, please be prepared to send up to 3.
  • Games are played under standard CLUBWAKA Kickball Rules
  • Games are up to 7 innings long. No new inning may begin after 50 minutes. All innings started must be played in it's entirety, unless the home team is winning during their at-kick.
  • Game times are listed on the schedule. If both teams and refs are available early and ready to roll, please don't feel like you have to wait until the start time. Anything we can do to get ahead of schedule is a bonus.

ROSTERS

Want to see who's on what team? Rosters can be found on the main Schedule & Standings doc underneath the 'rosters' tab

BRIARFIELD PARK

The park is located at 1560 Briarfield Rd, Hampton. The park is owned and operated by the Hampton Parks & Rec and is subject to all applicable laws and regulations set by the city.

The main point of reference is to alcohol. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on city park property. It’s important that all individuals be responsible and avoid openly drinking. We don’t want to do anything that would put our event at risk this year or in the future. If you choose to break this law, it is at your own risk. We just ask that you be smart, conceal, and don't leave the evidence in the trash cans. Be sure to take all of your related trash with you. Teams will be provided with trash bags by CLUBWAKA.

Pets are allowed at the park as long as they're on a leash, you clean up after them, and they aren't psychopaths.

CHECK-IN

Please give yourself some extra time when arriving so you can check-in at HQ and receive a wristband and other gifts courtesy of our sponsors.

ABOUT THE CHARITY

Contributions to the Sentara Cancer Network Mission Fund assist patients who are in need of medications and supplies not covered by insurance. Cancer education pamphlets, books, support group meetings, and other supportive programs (art therapy, education classes, etc.) are also funded with these generous contributions.

This year we are focusing on day of tasks - winners in EACH category will win a $100 bar tab at PBR for Saturday night!!! Soooo, if you win in fundraising and fun - that’s $200 to spend at PBR!

In addition to the proceeds from the registrations, we really want to encourage teams  to fund-raise during the tournament! Anna will give each captain an envelope to place their money raised throughout the day in - that will be returned at the end of the day and tallied to see how many points you will get! For a full list of missions please check out this doc. Results will be tracked on the "F Cancer" tab on the Schedule & Rosters doc.

Not participating in fund-raising? That's ok! Be sure to bring some cash though if you want to support others. Word on the streets is that #EffCancer will be giving away jell-o shots and crushes in exchange for donations.

Can’t wait to play some kickball AND have some fun raising some money while we are at it! Questions? Reach out to Anna Rigg at arigg@clubwaka.com.

AFTER-PARTY @ PBR HAMPTON, 7:30 PM

We're going blue for the official after-party of the CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer charity kickball tournament! All active members of a CLUBWAKA league & participants in the charity tournament are invited to join us for a party at Hampton's hottest night club, PBR!

CLUBWAKA guests will have the private bar upstairs reserved with a food buffet, no cover charge, and your first drink is on us. Please RSVP on this event so PBR has an approximate number to prepare for.

If it wasn't clear from the title, the theme for this party is 'Blue'. Rock your best blue outfits. In the spirit of the CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer weekend, we want to drive awareness of cancer. Dark blue is the official color of Colon Cancer. To find out more info about colerectal cancer, check out https://fightcolorectalcancer.org.

CLUBWAKA encourages everyone to drink responsibly. If you have a few too many, please use Uber promo code e7wv25u for $5 off your safe ride home. event.uber.com/claim?code=e7wv25u

SPONSORS

Thank you to our proud sponsors. Without their support, this event would not be possible.

SHIRTS

Team shirts will be given to your captain the morning of the event.

HOODIES

If you pre-ordered a CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer hoodie, you can pick it up at the HQ tent. If you did not pre-order a hoodie a very limited number of hoodies will be available for sale for $30 each. All proceeds benefit The Sentara Cancer Network. Thank you to KBS Apparel for the generous support!

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

We hope everyone has a safe day of kickball on Saturday, but in the event that someone does get hurt, Tidewater Orthopedics will be providing on-site medical professionals to help support and aid our players. If the injury is serious, Tidewater Ortho is the best place to go. They are the preferred provider for Sentara and many of the top colleges go to Tidewater Ortho to get their athletes back on the field. The best part is that their Same Day Sports Medicine clinic will guarantee that you are seen quickly.

The athletic trainer will be located at the HQ tent if you're in need.

FOOD TRUCK

Lunch options are limited at Briarfield Park but fortunately, we will have an on-site food option for the event. The STUFT Food Truck will be serving award-winning tacos, burritos, and more during the afternoon. Don't forget the Haas Sauce!

For more information on the Stuft Food Truck and to check out their menu, please visit stuftstreetfood.comhttp://www.stuftstreetfood.com/ or like them on Facebook

SOCIAL MEDIA

We encourage you to join and to like/follow our social media pages and use the #CLUBWAKAKicksCancer, #CLUBWAKA and #EffCancer when posting about Saturday's tournament. FOR THE 'GRAM!

THANK YOU

At the risk of being repetitive, I want to sincerely thank you all for joining us for this event. It's by far the highlight of my year and I'm so excited to have 18 teams playing together on Saturday. If there is anything I missed in this post or you need anything at all, please let me know.

Wednesday Kickball - Random Preseason Notes

We're only three Wednesdays away from the beginning of the 26th season of CLUBWAKA Wednesday Night Kickball on the Peninsula! I've personally played in 25 out of 26 seasons and I'm just as excited for this upcoming Fall as I was when I first joined back in 2007. There is plenty to be excited about too. The incredible atmosphere at War Memorial Stadium. The upgraded party scene at Guy Fieri's. The history and competition. Seeing my friends back on the field having a good time. All of this has me in the mood to do a little blogging. Let's look at how Peninsula is shaping up...

PBJT

The Jelly have been on a good run the over the last year, going 12-4-3 in their last 19 regular season games. However, their regular season success has not translated into a Wentworth Trophy®. As they head into their 14th season in the league, will this be the year they break through? While talented veterans like Casey Heck, Karen Savell, and Brook Holloway are returning, Brent & Christina Obershaw will have some holes to fill. Free agent Alex Jackson has already signed with Boos on First and it remains to be seen whether or not Mike Ragin, Neal Fitzpatrick, and Dr. Adam Gold will return now that Foul Balls is officially returning to #WAKAWednesday. The Obershaws are incredible recruiters however so I wouldn't bet against them.

FOUL BALLS

Who's Balls?! FOUL BALLS! After taking the Spring season off, the most tenured franchise in CLUBWAKA Hampton Roads history is returning for the Fall campaign. They are lead by captain Curtis Faubion who had previously played with the franchise in the Fall of 2015. Curtis brings a TON of experience in his leadership role. Not only is he a multiple time Wentworth Trophy Champion with The Situation and 5 O'Clockers. As a captain, he lead 5YP to a Wednesday title, Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, and the finals of Founders Cup in 2017. More recently, he's co-captained Pitches Love Bunkbeds to 3 Friday Night York County championships. The Foul Balls are in good hands.

The rest of the roster is being held close to the vest (i.e. procrastinating on registering) but we do see some familiar faces. Erin Small is making her return to the team for the first time since 2016. Brad Gault is transferring over from Pumped Up Kicks. Curtis also tapped his PLB network to bring Rachel Larson and Lee Craig over from Friday nights. No doubt we'll see more veterans and some new additions join the roster as the registration period continues.

The Fouls Balls have always been a serious team. Super serious.

F3B

I mentioned PBJT's regular season success earlier, but there is one team that has been even better. Over the last calendar year, F3B has gone 14-4-1. As great as they've been in the regular season, it's not translated to the playoffs, as their record during that time has been 1-2. This season they're returning with a singular goal of reversing that trend.

Continuity should be a strength of the team. In looking at their roster so far, there are not many differences from the Spring team. They look to be returning almost everyone from that squad, with one of the only confirmed loss being catcher Yani Borrero, who is on loan to the United States Navy. She was one of the best catchers in the league last season and will be missed. While that is a hole in their lineup, F3B will benefit from the addition of ace pitcher Ed Aaron. Ed had missed the last season while recovering from a knee injury. He immediately gives them some more power on the mound and in the middle of the order. With talent all around, black is back and will be a challenge to beat.

BOOS ON FIRST

After an up and down sophomore season that saw The Boozy Bunch finish 3-6-2 in the regular season, they finished on a high note. Captain Peter Murray's squad(ron) made a run to the Wentworth Trophy® Finals and damn near came away with the title. BoF boasts perhaps the most athletic team in the league, with the youngest overall average age. Their lineup boasts a good combination of speed, with lead off Bryan Koscielny standing out, and power (see Tom Sullivan's gif above). As of right now, Regina Palmiter is the only woman on the roster, but assuming they bring back many of the same ladies as they had last year, they're going to be among the best female units in the league.

The biggest hole on this team last season was probably experience. Not only will they have one more season under their belts, but Peter & Tom tapped into their Friday night Pop Pop connection and have recruited Alex Noctor, AJ Jackson, and Eddie Lopez. It's still too early and there is a lot of registrations yet to happen, but Boos On First is a strong contender to make the leap to the next level.

PUMPED UP KICKS

Pumped Up Kicks was our rookie squad in the Fall and they certainly took their lumps. You wouldn't blame them for getting a little deflated, but they stuck with it. Although their record was a winless 0-11, they steadily improved and started closing the gap. In one late season match up, they kept it close narrowly losing by 2 runs to the eventual champions, Rumspringa. They do have some talented but raw players, including Megan Hine and CJ Whispell. Chris "The Iron-Man" Betcher also stood out after a short adjustment to east coast kickball coming from leagues in Minnesota. New head coach Troy Carter has some pieces to work with.

Win or lose, one thing is for sure. Pumped Up Kicks will be well represented at Guy Fieri's each week.

RUMSPRINGA

Rumspringa has been a staple of CLUBWAKA Wednesday Kickball since 2010. As they head into their 20th season, the word is that this may be the last one for the storied franchise. Of course, the last two were also rumored to be the final season as well, but we fucked around and won a couple championships. Be that as it may, with this being the possible last ride for 'Springa, players from past are coming aboard for the Fall. The Rumspringa roster may climb as high as the mid-20s. That's a lot of players for captains Mike Ramey and Brian Yohn to handle, but certainly no shortage of talent. More importantly, an awesome sideline to be a part of from a personality standpoint.

In the previous two seasons, Rumspringa did not overly impress in the regular season, posting a 9-7-2 record. But when it comes tournament time, this crew has turned it on, going 5-0 and winning 2 Wentworth Trophies®. Can they do it one more time?

ADDITIONAL TEAMS

Although we only have 6 teams registered currently, there have been rumors of more teams forming. Recently the intramural director of the Apprentice School reached out and it's possible we may see a group form there. Also some other players from our Summer draft league are considering continuing #WAKAWednesday in the Fall. Hopefully, one or two of these new teams shake out.

As noted in the opening, we're three weeks out from the opening night. It's time to get these rosters right. Erica will be ordering the bar logo shirts tomorrow and the price for registration goes up on 9/1. If you haven't signed up yet, please do so at https://www.clubwaka.com/hampton-roads/kickball/wednesday/6006. If you have signed up (THANK YOU) please keep spreading the good word.

I can't wait to get back out to the Stadium with you all!

#WAKAWednesday - Week 2 Recap

What week are we talking about, Matt?

In the immortal words of Matt Wellbrock, "It's all about that pie, baby." I don't know what that really means, but it's provocative and I couldn't think of a better way to start the week 2 blog. Let's jump right into it!

RUMSPRINGA 16, PUMPED UP KICKS 1

The big legs up and down the Rumspringa lineup put stress on the inexperienced Pumped Up Kicks outfield. Felipe Cornejo, Daniel Shaw, and Matt Wellbrock all went yard in the romp. There were some highlights for the Kicks though, including this great effort by the pitcher (name?) to peg a 'Springa runner up the line. The charger also made some good plays including snagging a hard liner late in the game.

The charger also made some good plays including snagging a hard line drive late in the game.

F3B 8, BOOS ON FIRST 2

Boos on First came into this contest riding high after tying the defending champs in the opener but fell a little flat. F3B's offense exploded for 8 runs and took advantage of a few defensive miscues to earn a big early dub.

RUMSPRINGA 3, F3B 0

Daniel Shaw showed why he is the best hurler in the game by shutting down the high powered F3B offense, striking out 2 kickers. Cornejo and Daniel Waff drove in a run each in the 2nd to give 'Springa all the runs they'd need in the contest.

The defensive showdown was streamed live on Facebook for those who want to watch on demand.

PBJT 13, PUMPED UP KICKS 1

A rematch from last week, with pretty much the same results as the score ended up being 13-1 in both contests. PUK's Brian Hetland gave PBJT a shout out inside the Facebook group for being great sports and sticking around after the game to share some tips and play a fun scrimmage. He also apologized for 'being too vocal' citing 'too much pregame beer'.

Only 1 team in CLUBWAKA Wednesday Night Kickball has finished a season undefeated and won the Wentworth Trophy® and that was The Emperors Club back in the Fall of 2009. With F3B's loss tonight, the members of that team popped the champagne and celebrated their record once again staying intact.

WINGING IT

Another great turnout at B-Dubs with the Caps/Hurricanes game 7 on. The service was much better as they learned some valuable lessons from week 1. The pitchers were flowing wonderfully!

Get 10% off food, $7 pitchers, and your Blazin' Reward points this week while enjoying the following games on the TVs.

  • NBA Playoffs Rd 2: Portland @ Denver (Nuggets lead 1-0)
  • NHL Playoffs Rd 2: New York Islanders @ Carolina (Hurricanes lead 2-0)
  • NHL Playoffs Rd 2: St Louis @ Dallas (Blues lead 2-1)
  • MLB: A full slate of games with almost every team in action

IT'S DRAFT TIME!

Registration is open for our Summer Draft league in Hampton! This is a unique kickball league in that the majority of players join as free agents and are selected by captains in a draft party to fill out the rosters! It really mixes it up by balancing out the playing field and giving people the opportunity to meet and play with new teammates!

  • Games are on Wednesday nights starting July 10th
  • Location: Briarfield Park in Hampton
  • Postgame Sponsor Announcement is coming soon! (Clue: Get ready to commute to Flavortown)
  • 6-week season, which is the perfect bridge between spring and fall seasons
  • Early Bird Price ends on May 3rd! Sign up for only $55 by joining this week
  • Website: https://www.clubwaka.com/hampton-roads/kickball/wednesday/5003
Get your name in the draft today!

If you joined us this weekend for WAKAPALOOZA NORFOLK you saw first hand how much fun a single day kickball tournament can be. Our next charity kickball is right around the corner, so you won't want to miss it. We're taking the game to the beach with a CHARITY SAND KICKBALL TOURNAMENT to benefit the Sentara Foundation. Because we're playing on the beach, we'll be using a bigger ball, shorter base paths and dropping the fielders to 8 (4 male & 4 females). This is part of the North American Sand Soccer Weekend, so the Oceanfront is going to be the place to be! For full details and to join, please visit  https://www.clubwaka.com/hampton-roads/kickball/saturday/4512

*BREAKING NEWS* F3B has got their sunscreen ready and is the first team to begin forming! Who else is going to the Bash at the Beach??

WEEK 3 PREVIEW

6:30 PM: F3B (2-1) vs PUMPED UP KICKS (0-4)

The rookies will be looking to make progress against a tough F3B team trying to rebound after their first loss.

6:30 PM: PBJT (2-1) vs BOOS ON FIRST (1-1-1)

It took a walk-off kick to advance PBJT past Boos On First in the Fall playoffs. Boos on First have had all winter to look forward to this rematch.

7:30 PM: Rumspringa (2-1-1) vs PBJT (2-1)

Another rematch from the Fall 2018 playoffs is on tap, this time between the two finalists for The Wentworth Trophy®.

7:30 PM: F3B vs BOOS ON FIRST

A rematch from week 2 gives BOF an immediate chance at redemption after falling 8-2 against F3B.

The weather is looking FINE. Spring kickball, baby!

Looking forward to seeing you all at War Memorial Wednesday night. Reminder: Be sure to join the Facebook group and share your shoutouts so I can include them in the blog! My bullshit is so much better if I can just copy and paste from your stories!

Peninsula Kickball - Spring '19 Week 1 Round Up

It's a new season of #WAKAWednesday. *cracks knuckles* Time to write a long-ass blog about it that nobody asked for. Let's go!

GAME RECAPS

BOOS ON FIRST 12, PUMPED UP KICKS 0

This was a matchup between the two least tenured teams in the league. Boos on First kicked off their sophomore season with a total beatdown of the freshly Pumped Up Kicks playing in their first adult kickball game. Powered by a Tom Sullivan home run (all it cost him was one of his hamstrings) it was a steady stream of runs. We stop officially counting once we hit the mercy (12 after 3 innings), but altogether 27 runs were scored.

😬

Touch 'em all, Tom.

F3B 4, PBJT 1

A stout defensive performance from F3B locked up the Jelly offense and earned a big early win. A small bit of vengeance after PBJT eliminated F3B in the semi-finals of the Fall playoffs.

PBJT 13, PUMPED UP KICKS 1

The only good thing about losing a game by almost 4 touchdowns, is that you have nowhere to go but up. And while this game was still lopsided, lots of progress was made by the PUKs. "Without ever meeting before the first game and most never playing adult kickball, Pumped Up Kick had a drastic improvement from the first game to the second," captain Brad Gault said afterward, "I'm really excited to see this team grow together. Of course, as with any team I captain, we brought it at the bar."

For the Jelly, it was a well-rounded performance with Alex Jackson kicking his first home run of the season.

RUMSPRINGA 3, BOOS ON FIRST 3

Boos on First went from playing a team in their first kickball game ever to a team that is starting their 19th season and is fresh of winning the prestigious Wentworth Trophy® in the Fall. They were more than up for the challenge, and that started right from the beginning with BoF winning the pregame 3-person boat race to earn home-field advantage.

Relax those throats, boys.

After shutting the top of the 'Springa lineup out, the Boos jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The defending champs offense were being stymied by rookie pitcher Kory Kling. That is until Mike Cogan drove in two runs with a drive up the middle with 2-outs in the third. Clutch.

In the fourth inning, Rumspringa took a 3-2 lead after Matt Wellbrock patiently worked the count and drew a bases-loaded walk. With Rumspringa calling in their ace, Daniel Shaw, to close it out, this one looked like it was over. But Boos on First was not ready to write it off. Jason Engle lead off for the Boos with a single, went first to third on the next play, and then was driven in by a hard grounder from the foot of Kling. Just like that, the game was knotted up.

Before Rumspringa could even start a rally in the top of the 5th, the Boos on First defense shut it down. Bryan Koscielny had the play of the night, diving to rob Mike Ramey of a line drive single. Peter Murray followed it up by leaping to snag a Brian Yohn kick.

All in all, it was a fantastic game, and I personally look forward to meeting this team again soon. Most of the game was live-streamed on Facebook if you want to check it out. Come for the kickball action. Stay for the warm and dulcet narration by Mr. Wellbrock.

STANDINGS

WEEK 2 SCHEDULE

RUMSPRINGA (0-0-1) vs. PUMPED UP KICKS (0-2)

The Pumps will be looking to build on last week's debut. The defending champs will be looking for W #1.

BOOS ON FIRST (1-0-1) vs F3B (1-0)

RUMSPRINGA (0-0-1) vs. F3B (1-0)

F3B looked very strong against the Jelly last week. This week they'll be tested again with a doubleheader against Boos on First and 'Springa.

PBJT (1-1) vs PUMPED UP KICKS (0-2)

A rematch from week 1. The Jelly def. PUK 13-1. It will be interesting to see the progress made by game 4 of the season.

TOP 5 PLAYS

You probably noticed I got a new toy that I've been playing with. It's a gimbal that keeps my phone steady and helps me get some pretty cool shots. Each week, I'll try to put together some of the best plays and share them. If you happen to catch something cool, be sure to shoot it to me. The more content the better!

BAR REPORT

No matter how many times I tell a new bar manager that we're going to bring some numbers, I'm not sure they ever truly believe me. Buffalo Wild Wings was no exception. All 5 teams made it out to the bar and they actually ran out of pitchers! The short-staffed wait crew struggled a bit, but worked hard. Next week, they'll be better prepared to handle us. Apologies to everyone who had slow service and thank you to everyone that came out. Let's keep it up!

Hampton Wednesday Night Kickball @ War Memorial Stadium Spring 2019 Guide

Thank you all for joining us for CLUBWAKA Winter Kickball in Hampton! I'm excited to brave the elements with you all every Saturday afternoon while playing our favorite sport. As we get ready for the season to kick off tomorrow, here is some important information.

LEAGUE LEADERSHIP

Erica Rice be serving as the commish for the winter kickball this year. As the point of contact for the league, she's here to help with all questions and feedback. If you ever need anything at all, please let me know. You can reach me at brent@clubwaka.com, or in person at the fields or at the bar. She is on Pumped Up Kicks (lime).

I'm Brent Wentworth, the General Manager of CLUBWAKA in Hampton Roads. I'll be supporting Erica and the league as well, so please let me know if I can help! Additionally, we have other CLUBWAKA staff members playing in the league (Yanitza Borrero, Jeremy Chappell) who are always happy to help as well.

SCHEDULE, STANDINGS, AND ROSTERS

The schedule, standings, and rosters are located on this Google doc. You can also find a link on the league website and pinned to the top of our Facebook group.
Some notes on the schedule:
  • Each team is scheduled for 11 games except Pumped Up Kicks with 12, due to the uneven number of teams.
  • In the event of a rainout, we will move the games to 6/12 and the playoffs will be held on 6/19. If we have multiple rainouts, we will drop the games from the schedule without makeups, unless it puts a team below 8 games. In which case we will extend the season further as needed.
  • Each team has six reffing assignments, except Pumped Up Kicks, which has 4. Teams must provide at least two refs (home and first) for any games they are assigned. A third base ref is also recommended, but not required. Failure to provide refs will be a paper forfeit penalty in the standings.

WEATHER POLICIES

In the event of inclement weather, games may be canceled. The call to cancel a game will be made by the staff at War Memorial Stadium. We have played in light rain in the past, so if you see drops in the sky don't assume we're canceled!
Any cancelations will be announced via email and Facebook no later than 3 PM on game day (unless it's a late unexpected storm). If you haven't seen an announcement, assume that games are on. Ultimately our goal is to get as many fun kickball games in as possible without jeopardizing anyone's safety, putting undue wear and tear on the fields, or making everyone miserable.

FIELD POLICIES

All games will be played at War Memorial Stadium (1889 W Pembroke Ave, Hampton). These are the coolest fields in Hampton Roads for adult kickball. Beautiful grass, a brand new PA system playing tunes, and cold beers flowing from the tiki bar. We do have some guidelines to cover.

NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL: WMS does have an ABC license and players bringing in their own beer can put that at risk. We do not and can not allow that. All beer/cider consumed should be done so from the tiki bar. Don't worry though. These are not ballpark prices. Domestic beer is $3 and most of the craft beers are $4. Be sure to take care of Larry the bartender! Failure to adhere to this policy could result in a warning, paper forfeits, and removal from the park. Please don't make us be a cop and enforce this. Just do the right thing.
The park is pet-friendly. Just make sure you pick up after them. No one wants to slide through a dog turd on the way to home.

BUFFALO WILD WINGS

RULES & REFFING

All CLUBWAKA league games are officiated by fellow players. Let’s take a quick moment to go over some helpful tips that will help you not just as a player, but also as a referee.
  • Be familiar with the rules: The Official Rules of Kickball can be found here. There is also a very helpful FAQ that can be found online as well.
  • For the most part, new teams won’t be required to ref for the first couple of weeks. Take the time to hang out before or after your games and check out the best practices of the experienced refs.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. I never cease to be amazed at how helpful and friendly this crazy kickball community is. There is no shortage of people who would be happy to give advice!
  • There are several apps that help with counters. I recommend downloading the ClickBall app.
  • Be confident, do your best, and don’t stress!
Want to know why CLUBWAKA doesn't use paid refs for kickball? Happy to explain.

PAPA JOHN'S: THE OFFICIAL PIZZA OF CLUBWAKA HAMPTON ROADS

DAVID TORTOLINI REALTY: PROUD SPONSOR OF CLUBWAKA HAMPTON ROADS!

Buying or selling a home? You can't do better than the realtor that kickballers all over the Peninsula go to, David Tortolini. His knowledge of the market, strong work ethic, and extreme charm will make sure that your transaction goes as smooth as possible. Just like his skills on the kickball field. Be sure to give him a like at facebook.com/DavidTortoliniRealtyGroup

CLUBWAKA Hampton Roads Bowling - Spring 2019 Guide

Welcome to the Spring 2019 edition of the CLUBWAKA Hampton Roads Bowling League! We're set to go for another phenomenal season! There is plenty of information on the season website including the Rules, but keep reading for additional notes to help guide us through this adventure together.

My name is Jennifer Neal and I'll be your Community Coordinator. Overall, my goal is to help ensure everyone has the best experience possible. If you have any questions or feedback, don't hesitate to have a chat with me or send a message to jneal@kickball.com.

RULES AND FORMAT
Please take some time to review the League Rules and Best Practices. Some highlights:
  • For each game played, the top four scores (including 1 of each gender) will count toward a team's total pins for the week.
  • There are no wins and losses. Each week you are bowling against all teams and your total pins will determine your ranking.
  • Playoffs: The top half of teams will make the Championship bracket. The bottom half will make the Consolation Championship bracket. The playoffs will last two weeks and the teams with the highest total pins over weeks 7&8 will win the respective trophies.
  • Please follow proper bowling etiquette.

STANDINGS, ROSTERS, SCORES, SCHEDULE, AND TOP PERFORMANCES
Throughout the season, the results will be recorded on this Google Sheets spreadsheet. You can view not only the current season, but past seasons. The spreadsheet will also be available on the league website, in the league Facebook group (pinned as an announcement), and embedded below.

SOCIAL MEDIA
Speaking of Facebook, we encourage everyone to join the CLUBWAKA Peninsula Bowling group. This is a great forum to discuss the games, ask questions, and share photos and videos of your shenanigans each week. If you're posting about the league on Instagram, please tag @clubwaka in your photos/videos so we can see you!

WEEKLY TEAM CHALLENGES *NEW this Season*
Each week there will be a challenge to complete at the lanes. Participating players will earn points for their team. Some challenges will have the opportunity for BONUS points! The team with the most points at the end of the season will win!

PLAYERS CLUB CARDS
Sparetimes offers our league members access to their Players Club for discounted bowling and a points based rewards system for food and non-alcoholic beverages. A few notes and reminders:

  • New players need to fill out a form at the Sparetimes front desk in order to enjoy the benefits.
  • Cards are deactivated every August 31st.
  • Returning players will have their cards reactivated automatically.

SCORE SHEETS

The best practices are listed in the Rules, but please see below for an example. Note the following:
  • Changes to the bowling order can be made in the left column (Week 1 only).
  • At least one male and one female score will count toward the Team Pin Total.
  • Please ensure all scores are legible.
  • The first sheet goes to the front desk.
  • The second sheet goes to me (or someone acting in my stead).

Happy Bowling!
