Getting to Know: Bethany Show

Hey, that rhymes!

Welcome back to another edition of "Getting to Know". This time, we're going to take a deeper look into the Super Best Friends' newest player, "The Showstopper" Bethany Show. Recently, I had a conversation with her, and I think you'll enjoy getting to know one of the friendliest players in the league a little bit better.

Brent Wentworth: Bethany, thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview. To start off with,  This is your third season of WAKA Kickball, correct? How did you get involved?

Bethany Show: I was at work one day, and I was being nosy. I asked this girl next to me what she was doing on the computer, and she replied, 'Signing up for kickball.' I asked in disbelief, 'Like kickball, that you play in elementary school with the big red ball?'. She said, 'Yes', and said, 'Send me the link!'. I've been hooked like a fish ever since.

BW: That's awesome to hear. In your WAKA career so far, what has been your favorite memories, both on the field and off?

Bloody knee courtesy of Phil Nadolski
BS: Favorite on the field memory? I'd have to say the time Phil Nadolski was running to 2nd base. I caught the ball, got him out, and ended up with a bloody leg from his knee brace. He walked around like a sad puppy dog after that!

BW: I wonder if that's because he felt bad about hurting you or if he felt bad about getting out [laughing]. So what about off the field? What’s been your favorite memory over the last year?

BS: Making some fantastic new friends!

BW: That’s definitely the best part of our great league. So, tell us about yourself. What do you do outside of kickball?

BS: I am currently serving in the United States Air Force. My official title is “Oral and Maxillofacial Dental Technician”. I basically assist in any surgery from the shoulders up. Reconstruction, trauma, cosmetic, as well as typical dental procedures, such as dental implants or teeth removal. I’m also pursuing my bachelors in sociology, which I should have completed in about 18 months.

BW: Wow. Sounds like you have a lot going on! Thank you for serving our country. Being in the military, I assume you aren’t from around here originally. Where did you grow up?

BS: I grew up on a farm in rural Ohio. The closest city was about 45 minutes away. So, moving to Virginia was a bit of a culture shock.

BW: I can only imagine [laughing]. What hobbies do you have outside of kickball here?

BS: I have a 2 year old English Mastiff/American Bulldog mix. His name is Brewster. I spend a lot of time with him!

BW: Very cool. Since we’re covering the personal background stuff, I’d be derelict in my duties if I didn’t ask; Are you single and available?

BS: I am freshly out of a four year long relationship in October, so yes, I am single. But, no, I’m not looking for anybody. I’m just playing the field and keeping my options open. What girl doesn’t like a free dinner? [laughing]

BW: I’m sure you will have no shortage of kickballers offering this Fall. Speaking of the Fall, you recently signed on to play with the Super Best Friends Club (formally Battlestar Ballsacktica). Can you tell us why you decided to change teams?

Andy Tapley poses with his new
prized recruit.
BS: Andy Tapley [the captain of SBFC] and the Hunds [Allison and Jon, the former captains of Saved by the Balls] were supposed to have a combined team last season. However, that never worked out the way it was planned. So, this season, I just joined the team that was supposed to be together.

BW: Your first two seasons were with Saved by the Balls, which of course have gone down as one of the least successful teams, in terms of win/loss record, in VA Peninsula history. There are rumors that Brad Gault is planning on keeping the team alive, but with less than 2 weeks left in registration, they have yet to establish a friend group. Would you have come back to the team if asked or were you planning on leaving regardless?

BS: The first season I played, we blame on the o-o-o-o-orange jerseys. It was the plague of the jerseys [laughing]. I would have stayed with Jon and Allison because that is where my loyalty is. They are fantastic coaches and great people who did an amazing job!

BW: I agree. Jon and Allison are awesome. I hope they decide to come back and play this season. The league would not be the same without them around. With Saved by the Balls, you went 0-24. Did it matter that you guys never won?

BS: It half mattered. We had a lot of fun playing and other teams had a lot of fun playing us. We definitely gave a good fight every game!
"[Jon and Allison] are fantastic coaches and great people..."
BW: Did it ever get frustrating?

BS: There is always frustration when you practice and train for the Super Bowl and not even make the playoffs.

BW: True. So, with your new team what are your expectations? What do you see in store for the Super Best Friends Club?

BS: I believe we have a ton of talent, not just at the bar and on the stripper poles [laughing]. It will be a fantastic time watching all the players grow together and keeping the team as one!

BW: I’m sorry. I stopped listening when you mentioned stripper poles though. Thank you, Bethany, for your time! Great interview and good luck this Fall!

BS: Thank you!
