Good day fine people of the WAKA Peninsula division. Spring is in the air and that can only mean one thing...the return of my (almost) weekly (pretty terrible) Jagernaut recaps (hey I'm an engineer, not a writer). So sit back, grab a beer, and lets go!
Week 2 of the spring 2012 season found the Jagernauts playing their first game (in the classic Jagernaut Urple uniforms) after playing a one inning week 1 "practice" match before mother nature took her fury on the fields. But, in week 2, with all of classic 90's music blasting at beautiful War Memorial Stadium, I got a little nostalgic and started to remember my time during the 90s, with my long hair, Doc Martens, Flannel shirts and dial-up internet connection.
Ok, enough of that, now onto the game. Week 2 saw the Jagernauts facing the sophomore Free Ballin' team, in a very close back and forth battle. The Jagernauts began the game with the top of the lineup, which was good, cause that's what's supposed to happen. Then Dan Moore reached base, then Joe Mazziti reached base, and then two sacrifice RKI's by Mike Seals and Julie Kittelson later, the Jagernauts were suddenly up 2-0. The bottom of the inning and in inning 2 saw some stellar play from the Jagernaut defense as they were able to burn the top of the FB lineup, keeping FB scoreless.
Free Ballin' made a good comeback in the third, and the Jagernauts were in trouble. After a thrown out at first and a sacrifice fly to left center, the Jagernauts were in a bad situation with a runner at 3rd and the middle of the order up to kick. However a critical base running error cost as the base runner left the base early and was called out for the third out. Now some may argue the merits of calling the runner out at third on a seemingly inconsequential rule, however, this is not 'Nam, this is kickball, there are rules. The damage was contained as FB was only able to score one run. However in the fourth, FB was able to load the bases and run away with 2 additional runs.
The Jagernauts went into the 5th inning trailing 3-2. However the bottom of the lineup struck as (3rd person alert) Justin Littell reached first on a bloop single, leading the way for the top to capitalize on the FB mistake. Dan Moore eventually scored on a RKI single in the top to tie the game 3-3. The Jagernaut defense held as Kyle Wright caught the final out in left center field, leading to the 3-3 tie.
The Jagernaut defense showed only a bit of rust on defense, but mostly it was a-partially-but-an-almost-well-oiled-machine. The infield held and the outfield led by Justin Arrington, Justin Littell and Kyle Wright made some clutch catches.
The MVP award of the week goes to Mike Ramey, who, in an ironic twist of serendipity, is credited with making the most brilliant MVP award to give to Kathleen Krohn for winning the Jagernaut NCAA tournament bracket. Behold.
Ahh spring kickball...it's good to be back
