Week 1 Recap: Situation vs Pop Pop

Situation – 7
Pop Pop – 2

The final score was not a good representation of how close this game actually was. The light rain and slick ball made it difficult for the infield to make normally routine plays.

Situation was the away team and loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 1st. A couple sacrifice kicks later and Sitch is up 2-0. Brad Kirby led off for Pop Pop and smart base running led to a lead-off triple. A bunt sacrifice brought him in and Sitch led 2-1 at the end of one inning.

The next few innings were a defensive battle led by a pitching duel between Blake and Haas. Both were throwing heat and hitting the corners, leading to multiple strike outs.

Sitch struck next with a huge 4th inning. Sitch’s bottom two girls (Ashley Carte and Liza Maula) both reached base with a perfect bunt and well placed kick. Kyle Lewis then beat out a 1st base bunt loading the bases with no outs. Jeremy Edge then landed a kick down the right field line bringing in Ashley. John LaNeave had a sacrifice kick allowing Liza to score, then Blake kicked a double scoring Kyle and Edge. Gene Efird bunted to get on and Sitch now had runners on 1st and 3rd. Josh Waldrop kicked in Blake and Gene was pegged at 3rd on a very close play. When all was said and done, Sitch puts up 5 runs in the 4th to take a 7-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 4th, some aggressive base running again by Kirby put him in scoring position with a two-out double, but was stranded to end the 4th.

Sitch went three up-three down in the top of the 5th and Pop Pop was now down to their last three outs. Some well-placed kicks down the 3rd base line and a dropped ball at 1st, allowed Pop Pop some base runners, where Alex Noctor was eventually brought in. Pop Pop was only able to push one across in the bottom of the 5th and the game ended in a 7-2 Situation win.

Overall, this was a great game for Week 1 considering the slick conditions. It would not surprise me to see these two teams in the finals come November.
