VA Peninsula Spring 2014 - Week 1 Results

Week 1 was not without upsets.
Want to know all the results from Wednesday night, but don't have 75 minutes to watch 3 Up 3 Down? Don't worry. Each week, I'm going to post a quick run down of all the games. Without further ado...

Battlestar 4, Chaotic KILFs 3
The KILFs looked like they were in over their heads after allowing 4 runs in a sloppy first inning. They shook off the jitters though and clawed their way back into the game. The KILFs bases loaded rally in the 5th ended as Brandon Covington was thrown out at home by Michael Machie to secure the W.

Breaking Brad 9, New Kickheads 5
Breaking Brad broke out the offense in week 1!

#WAKAholics 7, Kick in a Box 3
The game was tied going into the bottom of the 4th inning, when the 'Holics top of the order came back around. The inexperienced KiaB sqaud wasn't able to contain them, as the Hashtags exploded for 4 runs.

Rumspringa 6, Ballsagna 1
Geoff Morehart struck out 4 kickers and the 'Springa defense worked their way out of several jams to earn the big win (and also cost yours truly a $1,000).

PBJT 6, Kick A$$ 4
Steve Monahan's 2 RKIs in the top of the 5th put the Jellies ahead. Megan MacDowell and Brent Obershaw each drove in a run to pad the lead. It was a lead that would hold, as PBJT earns a BIG week 1 victory over the preseason #3 ranked team.

Wrecking Balls 8, Foul Balls 4
The Foulies scored 3 runs in the first, but couldn't contain the former Chubby Gangster offense. The top of the Wrecking Balls went 6-6, including a big home run by Keith Morehart. A dominant week for the Morehart family apparently.

Plan B 4, JFK 3
In the 4th inning, JFK made the decision to intentionally walk Kearsten Lewis to 'burn' the top of the Plan B lineup. It was a strategic move that back fired, as two kickers later Jimmy Wilcox booted a 3 run home run to take the lead. In the 5th, JFK's Jill Simms drove in a pair to tie it up. The tie wouldn't hold though. Plan B loaded the bases up and Matt Coup's line drive found a hole to earn a walk off win.

Ballz Deep 6, Boom 6
This was a back and forth affair that saw the the lead change several times. In the 5th inning, Boom held a 2 run lead. They made a decision to intentionally walk a guy to get to Amroth Hough. With the bases loaded, she belted a line drive that tied the game up.

DCOMB 6, WAKA Shame 0
Jeffrey Shildt pitched 5 shut out innings as Don't Come on our Base made a splash in their kickball debut.

Lots of great games during week 1. Be sure to check out Dottie Wentworth's photos on Facebook.

Bar Buzz: Allow me to reintroduce myself…

My name is Fagel, like Bar to the Bu’ to the ‘zzzzzz-zzz-zz

And I am so excited to be your Wednesday night, VA Peninsula, Bar Buzz! For those who don’t understand what the Bar Buzz is, let me put it simply; the Bar Buzz is everywhere you want to be, all-knowing of the bar shenanigans, and judger of all things fun. For those who don’t know me; know the Bar Buzz and know me.

The Bar Buzz is the weekly blog that will focus on the happenings at the Bar (Luckies) after each WAKA Wednesday game. While the games are important you should notice that even WAKA’s tagline “Best Parties. Best Games. Best Friends” places a higher importance on the parties. It comes first, therefore is obviously of high importance. So this means that while of course you should show up to the stadium for the larger-than-life feeling of WAKA kickball, you should also make an effort to over-populate Luckies in the multitude of colors that are our shirts, and basically bring the house down.

In addition to over-populating Luckies with our rainbow of shirts and personalities, there is the added element of winning the coveted Bar Belt! Now there have been rumors of getting a new belt, and the rumors are true; WAKA VA Peninsula will be graced with the presence of a new, custom, Bar Belt! This Bar Belt will be won using similar standards as before; mingling, social media presence, challenges, wooing/bribing me, and of course general good-natured fun.
  1. Mingling: I know your team is awesome, but you’re even more awesome. So go spread your awesomeness around. WAKA’s tagline is “Best Parties. Best Games. Best Friends.” Go mingle and find your new BFFL.
  2. Social Media Presence: Once you’ve successfully spread your awesomeness around, go brag about it! I’m all about some Facebook, IG, and Twitter and not only are we promoting our individual awesomeness, but we’re promoting this league! Not sure if you’re aware, but you are about to play in a pretty epic league that is nationally known by other WAKA leagues. So let’s continue our social media domination with hashtagging and selfies!
  3. Challenges: I’m going to be better about this. Remember to follow @WAKAbarbuzz to find the challenges. A few of the teams got really into this last season, so let’s continue challenging!
  4. Wooing/bribing me: I am not beneath bribery, and neither should you! How bad do you want this belt? I’m a gin and tonic and buffalo chicken sliders kind of girl. I also like selfies and pictures with people who think I’m awesome. Come introduce yourself to me, make an impression, woo me, win me over, and win the belt.
  5. Good-natured fun: You know, positive attitudes and no complaining. Dancing and having a good time. Drinking responsibly and taking selfies all leads to good-natured fun.

So, next on the timeline are the team Party Previews! Considering I didn't get a preview from all of the teams, it should be a clear indicator of who have good shots at winning the belt J

Can’t wait for Wednesday!

Peace out,
Fagel

The Situation Wins the 3rd Annual VA Raptor Cup!

HAMPTON, VA - The 3rd Annual WAKA VA Raptor Cup tournament was held at Gosnolds Hope Park on Saturday. Eight Seven teams competed for the winter championship on this beautiful day. In the end, The Situation repeated as WAKA VA Raptor champions. They defeated the 3rd seeded Beast Mode, 1-0 in the Finals. Blake Kalaikai pitched 5 shut out innings (1K, 1 FO) and Matt Coup's 2nd inning sacrifice fly drove in the only run of the game.

The trophy will be added to The Situations' impressive collection. Including several travel tournaments, The Situation has won 2 VA Raptor and 2 VA Peninsula titles. Will 2014 be the year that they finally win the Founders Cup?

VA Raptor - Week 7 Results

photos courtesy of Brad Kirby, Jabberjaws
Let's run down the results from the final week of the 2014 VA Raptor Winter season!

Beast Mode 5, Denim Devils 1
Brian Yohn finished off 1/2 a bottle of Kraken and the Beasts were unleashed. Geoff Morehart's bases clearing double gave BM a 3-0 lead in the first and they never looked back.

The Situation 17, Flip Cup Trainees 0
No quarter asked for. None given.

Jabberjaws 7, #WAKAholics 1
Brent Wentworth's throw sailed past a diving Michael Kern to allow an early 2nd inning run for the 'Holics. Later, Wentworth would redeem himself though. He gunned down a runner attempting to tag up at home from about 90 feet away to end the game. (For those new, yes, I won't hesitate to refer to myself in the 3rd person).

The Situation 13, Denim Devils 0
The Situation clinched the top seed in convincing fashion with this victory over the Denim Devils.

Jabberjaws 10, Flip Cup Trainees 3
Consistency was the name of the game for the Jabberjaws offense, as they scored in every inning of the contest against the Trainees. Flip Cup didn't just roll over though. Amber Kirby showed some speed and a bit of sneakiness in the 5th. Taking advantage of a momentary lapse in attention, she "stole" 3rd and later scored.

Dark Horses 5, Breaking Brad 0 (forfeit)
Dark Horses 5, Breaking Brad 0 (forfeit)

The Situation 4, Jabberjaws 3
Heading into this match, The Situation had not allowed a run for 30 consecutive innings. Over this 6 game stretch, they outscored opponents 74-0. That streak was snapped in the first inning when the Jabberjaws landed 4 straight line drives by Curtis Faubion, Wentworth, Joe Preseault, and Nick Schmidt to take a 2-0 lead. The kead would be extended to 3-0 in the 3rd when Brad Kirby ripped an RKI to center to score Juice Fitzgerald from 2nd... But The Situation was not going to roll over. Helped by some smart base running by Kearsten Lewis (not a guy, by the way), Sitch scored 3 runs in the bottom of the third to tie it up. In the 4th, Dom Smith scored on Alex Jackson's single to put The Situation ahead, 4-3.

Here are the final regular season standings and tournament schedule.
This is shaping up to be a hell of a tournament to close the season out. Can't wait for Saturday!

VA Raptor - Week 6 Results

We're getting down to the wire here as teams are jockeying for position. With only a couple weeks left in this wild Winter '14, the playoff picture is coming into focus. Let's take a look at the week 6 results.

The Situation 14, Breaking Brad 0
No South Florida hangover for The Situation.

Beast Mode 11, #WAKAholics 0
Rusty Wallace's bases clearing triple opened up the flood gates for Beast Mode.

Jabberjaws 3, Denim Devils 1
Josh Carr's aggressive base-running helped the Devils gain an early advantage, scoring in the first.  A 1-1 tie was broken up in the 3rd inning by Allen Walker's 2 RKI Sac Fly to give the Jaws a 3-1 lead that they would hold. Brad Kirby kicked in the leadoff spot for the first time this season and went 2-2 with 2 runs scored. The win brought the Jabberjaws within 1/2 a game of 2nd place.

Beast Mode 13, Breaking Brad 2
Beast Mode was dropping bombs on the Brads. Everytime I glanced over to field 1, black shirts were racing around the bags. The Double-Bs kept playing hard though, and earned a couple runs with timely kicks and evasive running (including an infield home run by Wes McClain)  to avoid the shut out.

The Situation 17, #WAKAholics 0
Sitch padded the run differential a bit on Saturday, scoring 31 runs while allowing 0. The juggernaut rolls on.

Dark Horses 4, Flip Cup Trainees 3
Certainly, this was the game of the week. In a back and forth affair that saw several lead changes, the Dark Horses struck last.  Jeff White narrowly avoided catcher Eric Steven's tag to score the go ahead run in the 5th inning.

VA Raptor - Schedule Updates

Raptors,

Good luck to all The Situation, Jabberjaws, and others who are traveling to South Florida this weekend. Do work! I will be one of those enjoying the Florida sun. In my absence, Keith Morehart will be the primary point of contact for this weekends. If you have any questions at the fields, please see this man.

Thanks, Keith! Appreciate your help!

Re: The Schedule.
Last weekend we had to call the games due to the weather. Unfortunately, we don't have enough space to make up all of the games. However, two games (Sitch/Jaws & Horses/Brads) will be rescheduled for 3/8 at 3 PM. This was done to ensure that all teams finish with a full 9 games played in the regular season. If there are any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Have fun this weekend! Looks like it's going to be a beautiful Saturday in the 60s (finally)!

Brent

10 Free Agents You Want On Your Kickball Team

We're still 2 months away from the kick-off of the 7th year of WAKA VA Peninsula kickball, and it's already shaping up to be an interesting one. VA Peninsula has historically seen a high rate of continuity from season to season when it comes to teams. But every once in a while, a franchise runs it's natural course and disbands. This season is a season of change, as several teams have already announced their dissolution, including the 5 O'Clockers, Pop Pop, The Situation, Free Ballin', and Kickin' Atoms.

And while the franchises are folding, most of the players are not. In fact, this shake up has resulted in an abundance of free agents flooding the market. Let's take a look at some of the most notable.

Casey Heck
Charger - This former Kickin' Atom is nicknamed 'Seattle Jesus'. Seriously, you don't think a guy named Seattle Jesus would be a good addition to any kickball team?

David Chappell
Outfield - His announcement on Facebook today helped inspire this column. Despite his claim to have 'limited skills and a bad attitude', he could be a valuable member of any team looking for a line driving machine.

Allen Walker
First Base - The long time 5 O'Clocker first baseman is shopping for a team for the first time since 2009. Great hands at first, knowledge, experience, and a huge right foot make Walker a hot commodity.

Nathaniel "Jorts" Johnson
Outfielder - This former Pop Popper is fresh off of a 3rd team All-Peninsula nod in the Fall, which makes him a desirable target for captains in need of outfield help. Rumors are that two of his former clubs, Foul Balls and Kick Ass, are in the hunt for Johnson, although that is unconfirmed. One thing is certain, whichever team signs Jorts will receive plenty of airtime on 3 Up 3 Down.

Adam & Andrea Henry
Power couple - Any team that's looking for a versatile all-arounder and a reliable woman can do worse than picking up these two. These two former Chicken Tetrazini's are wonderful teammates to have in the locker room.

J.P. Wilkinson
Utility - It's nice to have someone who actually enjoys reffing on your roster! And he's not bad at kickball either. In a recent interview, Wilkinson expressed his desire to play with a competitive squad. All championship contenders need a gritty role player, and they don't get much grittier than this former Free Baller.

Dom Guarry
Outfielder - Guarry played with Peanut Butter Jelly Time last year, but failed to come to terms on a contract extension for the spring. The veteran outfielder uses his low center of gravity to avoid attempted pegs as he dashes around the base paths. Look for his time on the waiver wire to be short.

McCoy Wood
Utility - One of the legends of the sport. The former captain of the 2010 Founders Cup Champions, Panik Attack and most recently the starting pitcher for the 5 O'Clockers announced after the Fall that he would be retiring from the sport. But if you follow him on twitter, every once in a while you'll see he gets the itch.
If any charismatic captain can talk Wood out of retirement, than he could be the steal of the offseason!  (Haha. Just kidding. McCoy isn't coming back!)

Brent Wentworth
Pitcher / 1B - 5 time. 5 time. 5 time. 5 time. 5 time Wentworth Trophy® winner.

VA Raptor - Week 3 Results

Jabberjaws' catcher Curtis Faubion displays his focus.
Week 3 was a chilly one at Gosnolds Hope Park, but there was no ice or snow on the ground, so I'll take it! Lots of great games on the schedule, so let's run down the results.

Beast Mode 6, Jabberjaws 2
The Beasts jumped out on top against the 'Jaws by scoring 6 runs in the first frame.  Brandon Silver's bomb to deep right field drove in 2 runs and got the party started for the Mode. Jabberjaws threatened in the fourth, but their rally was squashed by an unassisted double play by second baseman Sarah Ruch to escape the bases loaded jam.

Breaking Brad 5, Flip Cup Trainees 0 (Forfeit)
The winter bug that's been going around hit the Trainees pretty hard this week, as they were not able to field a team unfortunately. Breaking Brad gets their first 'W' of the season, but probably not the way they would prefer.

The Situation 8, Dark Horses 0
Through the first 3 innings, the Horseys held the high powered Situation offense to just one run. But in the 4th, the flood gates opened and they opened up a comfortable lead.

Denim Devils 6, #WAKAholics 2
The Devils picked up the big win on the kickball field and proceeded to do very well in the Checkered Flag Olympics as well.
Amelia Harveycutter and Josh Carr medaled in Flip Cup on Saturday.

The Situation 5, Beast Mode 0
Last week, Beast Mode played The Situation to a draw, but the offense wasn't able to penetrate the orange defense this week. Sitch put up 5 runs on the way to securing an impressive double header sweep.

Jabberjaws 5, Dark Horses 0
In the second inning Daniel Shaw and Chris Roberts drove in Mike Machie and Joe Presault to give the 'Jaws a 2 run lead. That's all they'd need as the defense played tightly and limited the Horses to no runs for the afternoon.
