Kickball In the Time
of the Peninsula; or
Who will Kick Our Balls When We’re Gone?; or
How I Learned
to Stop Worrying About Co-Worker’s Questions and Love Kickball
It’s been five whole days since WAKA Wednesday and with no
Friday kickball I needed another way to get my kickball fix. Luckily I
was able to find an old copy of Tecmo Wentworth
Bowl, the first game to include
actual players from the WAKA Peninsula league. Similar in fashion to Tecmo Super Bowl, each pitch commenced with the two players (one controlling offense and the other defense) choosing from one of eight different plays including bunting, kicking away, and popping out. If the defense selected the same play as the offensive player, the play typically resulted in an out. But if two different plays were picked, a hit was likely.
But the real improvement of Tecmo Wentworth Bowl over previous kickball video games was the inclusion of real teams and players from the WAKA Peninsula League. Based on the Spring 2009 season
it includes ten teams:
Foul Balls - the eventual champions of the real kickball season included Roger Jackson and Jason Kidd (the Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen of kickball). A young Andreas Beyersdorf can also be seen on the Foul Balls bench.
5 O’Clockers - the previous season champions
The Emperors Club - another former championship squad including Georgios Kiriazidis. Interestingly, despite appearing on the cover of the game, contract disputes resulted in Brent Wentworth's removal from the game and he is referred to solely as ‘Pitcher Emperors Club'.
Rounding out the roster of teams are Your Mom, Wilfred Brimley’s Moustache Ride (always a contender for the best team name ever), The Suits,
Posh’s Wet Posse, Space Balls, TailGators, & Perpetual Motion Squad.
Needless to say, if you find a copy you should really give it a try.
See you all on the real kickball fields on Wednesday & Friday - #KITTOTPOWWKOBWWGOHILTSWACQALK
