Notes & Observations
- It’s been a rough start for the Fireballs offense. 15 scoreless innings. They got the athletes to score some runs in this league, but it just hasn’t come together yet. The defense did some work though. Captain TJ Guarry was optimistic, “We are making positive steps each week.” Perhaps the Fireballs offense will ignite in week 4 when they take on the 3-1 Foul Balls, who are currently giving up 5.25 runs per game (14th in the league).
- Todd Schimmel had another standout week, blasting a homer and driving in 3 runs. He’s a big reason why the Tacos are now at .500.
- It’s not often that Hot Dogs and Tacos are on the winning end of a 14 run game. They definitely savored the opportunity to run it up. Pitching Dez definitely is going to have their challenges as they continue learning. Victories on the field may be hard to come by, but one thing is for sure, they know how to win at Luckie’s.
- For my money, Cardiac Arrests’ Travis Cobb has the strongest throwing arm of any first baseman in the league. The last out of the KPGM game displayed it as he gunned out Terrell McClain going home. The craziest part is that it looked so effortless.
- Cardiac took care of business in their double header and are sitting atop the league standings at 4-0. We’ll be tested over the next month though as we face JFK, Bizarro, Kick A$$, and the Itch. Can’t wait to see what the team is made of.
- Bizarro finally snapped their streak of 0-0 ties by pulling out a 2-1 win against The Itch. As they’re becoming known to do, they went a little unconventional at times. This included a shut out 3rd inning with Lorraine Adkins on the mound. She did the job, allowing only 1 Itch base runner to reach successfully.
- Not to take away from DCOMB, Cardiac, or KPGM, but I’m shocked that Rumspringa has started off 1-3. Going into the season, they were seen by many pundits as Wentworth Trophy® contenders. With the brutal stetch of Itch/KA/Bizarro/JFK coming up, there is a chance they’ll be 1-7 to start out this season. Everyone makes the playoffs, so they could still end up in the title picture, but they’ll need to start building some confidence.
- A great game by Brandon Covington (1-1, 2 RKI, and an unassisted double play) earned him the “KILFs’ Man of the Match” honors. To the victor goes the hobo jacket.
- The Foul Balls withstood a late 5TDK rally to earn a win on Wednesday. A highlight included rookie catch Mike Ragin tipping a ball high into the air, adjusting, and making the catch. This was a critical out.
- Kick A$$ took advantage of a JFK team that was missing the top two chargers on their depth chart. While JC Cashwell and Brian Neal did a serviceable job filling in, the speedy KA bunters were able to get on base all game long. When these two teams square off again on June 3rd, I don’t expect the same result.
