VA Peninsula Bowling - Spring 2017 Playoff Format

Hello there spring bowlers. Hopefully your captains have already been communicating with you regarding the plan for the playoffs this season. BUT EVEN THE CAPTAINS DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING I'LL BE COVERING BELOW...

Since this season was made up of 18 teams and only 6 "regular season" weeks, the captains and I agreed that total pins would be a better choice for determining team standings entering the playoffs rather than wins and losses. This would help eliminate any potential "strength of schedule" concerns. So, even though we are still tracking wins and losses, those are purely for bragging rights.

Note: "Total pins" is based on a team's top four scores in each game as covered in the Rules on the main website.

If you look at the spreadsheet that is pinned to our Facebook group, you'll see the first tab shows team standings based on total pins with the top half (9 teams) highlighted. This was another captains agreement where we agreed that 50% would be a good way to determine (for this season and potentially for future seasons) which teams would advance to the playoffs to compete for...

Thus, the first round of the playoffs for the Bud Light trophy will be the top 50% of the league based on regular season total pins. After the first round of playoffs (1 week/2 games), these 9 teams will be narrowed down again to the top 50% (rounded down)(4 teams) based solely on total pins during the first round. Finally, the championship round will consist of these 4 teams bowling 2 games to determine who will hoist the Bud Light trophy based solely on total pins during the championship round.

In summary, to earn the Bud Light trophy:

18 teams
Top 4 scores per game * 2 games per week * 6 regular season weeks

Top 9 teams advance to first round
Top 4 scores per game * 2 first round games

Top 4 teams advance to championship round
Top 4 scores per game * 2 championship round games

Top team emerges victorious!!

At some point I started wondering about the other 9 teams that didn't advance to play for the Bud Light trophy. Yes, everyone would still be able to bowl during the playoffs and have a grand old time, but... what... if...

Let's have a tournament for the other 9 teams! Same rules, different trophy. The bottom 50% of teams after the regular season will compete for...
