Hampton Winter Kickball - Welcome Packet

Thank you all for joining us for CLUBWAKA Winter Kickball in Hampton! I'm excited to brave the elements with you all every Saturday afternoon while playing our favorite sport. As we get ready for the season to kick off tomorrow, here is some important information.

LEAGUE LEADERSHIP

To start with, I will introduce myself. I'm Brent Wentworth, the GM of CLUBWAKA Hampton Roads. I'll be serving as the commish for the winter kickball this year. As the point of contact for the league, I'm here to help with all questions and feedback. If you ever need anything at all, please let me know. You can reach me at brent@clubwaka.com, on Facebook, or in person at the fields or County Grill. I'm on Unsupervised (royal blue).
Lauren Guyrisin (Unsupervised) is the league social coordinator. She'll be the point person for planning our league parties. If you want to get involved with planning our big March end of season blowout, be sure to hit her up! Additionally, we have other CLUBWAKA staff members playing in the league (Anna Rigg, Curtis Blauch, Yanitza Borrero) who are always happy to help if you need anything.

SCHEDULE, STANDINGS, AND ROSTERS

The schedule, standings, and rosters are located on this Google doc. You can also find a link on the league website and pinned to the top of our Facebook group.
Some notes on the schedule:
  • While only 6 games are initially scheduled, we will play at least 8 regular season games.
  • 3/9 and 3/16 are open and will be used for weather makeups. IN the event we have no rainouts, we will add games based on the current standings.
  • Every Tuesday morning, we will check the weather forecast. In the weeks when the weather is expected to be good (50+ degrees and clear), we will work to find refs and add doubleheaders to the schedule. The league will be notified by Wednesday at noon of any schedule updates.
  • Each team has three reffing assignments. When available, games will have a dedicated head ref and teams will provide two base refs. Failure to provide base refs will be a paper forfeit penalty in the standings.
  • The playoffs will be on March 23rd

WEATHER POLICIES

In the event of inclement weather, games may be canceled. This is a winter league, so of course, we'll be in the elements at times, but we generally will factor in the following when making decisions to cancel
  • Heavy rain
  • Snowfall that has made travel to the fields (and bar) dangerous
  • Freezing temperatures
  • Precipitation with temps in the 30s/40s
  • If Brent has a severe hangover from Friday night drinking (kidding!)
These are guidelines, and not hard and set rules. Any cancelations will be announced via email and Facebook no later than 10 AM on gameday. If you haven't seen an announcement, assume that games are on. Ultimately our goal is to get as many fun kickball games in as possible without jeopardizing anyone's safety, putting undue wear and tear on the fields, or making everyone miserable.

FIELD POLICIES

All games will be played at Barron Elementary School (45 Fox Hill Rd, Hampton). Barron is obviously an elementary school and subject to city laws. Please be smart and responsible. If you choose to consume any beverages during your games, you must conceal and take your trash with you. We have a great relationship with Hampton Parks & Rec and leaving a bunch of evidence behind would jeopardize that. More importantly, we don't want anyone getting into (real) trouble.
The park is pet-friendly. Just make sure you pick up after them. No one wants to slide through a dog turd on the way to home.

COUNTY GRILL

You and your teammates are encouraged to stop by our postgame clubhouse, COUNTY GRILL (26 E. Mercury Blvd, Hampton) to warm up, mingle, and enjoy great specials on food and drinks. CLUBWAKA members receive:
  • $6 Bud Light or Rolling Rock pitchers
  • $4 WAKA Bombs
  • $5 Margaritas
  • $12 select craft beer pitchers
  • $4 Bell's Two Hearted
  • $13.99 Wing Buckets, $5 chips & queso, $6 hot dogs or 2 for $10, $7 bar nachos
The bar is only 1/2 a mile from the fields, so you better have a good excuse for not coming out afterward! As always, CLUBWAKA encourages all players to drink responsibly and have a safe ride home.

SEASON KICK OFF PARTY

To kick off the season on the right foot, we are hosting our first party immediately following the games at County Grill. All members will enjoy FREE beer (while the keg lasts) and bar nachos! This is in addition to all of the great specials already offered!

RULES & REFFING

All CLUBWAKA league games are officiated by fellow players. Let’s take a quick moment to go over some helpful tips that will help you not just as a player, but also as a referee.
  • Be familiar with the rules: The Official Rules of Kickball can be found here. There is also a very helpful FAQ that can be found online as well.
  • For the most part, new teams won’t be required to ref for the first couple of weeks. Take the time to hang out before or after your games and check out the best practices of the experienced refs.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. I never cease to be amazed at how helpful and friendly this crazy kickball community is. There is no shortage of people who would be happy to give advice!
  • There are several apps that help with counters. I recommend downloading the ClickBall app.
  • Be confident, do your best, and don’t stress!
Want to know why CLUBWAKA doesn't use paid refs for kickball? Happy to explain.

PAPA JOHN'S: THE OFFICIAL PIZZA OF CLUBWAKA HAMPTON ROADS

CLUBWAKA members can save on their Papa John's orders all year with promo code WAKA18 (2 large one-topping pizzas for $18) or WAKA5 ($5 off any order of $25 or more). We'll also have some fun BOGO Day giveaways throughout the year, so look out for more information! Mmmmm. Pizza!
