It's been a few days since Saturday and I think I'm finally recovered. Thank you all for joining the CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer Tournament. Not only was it a fantastic day of kickball, but together we raised $6,830 for The Sentara Cancer Network. These funds will go a long way toward providing critical care and support for local patients fighting the battle of their lives. I couldn't be more proud of the CLUBWAKA Kickball Community. While everyone played a part, I'd like to recognize some people who really made this event successful.
- Our Captains - Thank you for rallying the troops and getting your squads registered. Fantastic communication and positive attitudes set the tone, especially when we had curveballs thrown our way (i.e. the baseball field being underwater).
- Refs/Volunteers - Thank you to everyone who volunteered to ref on Saturday. Your time and effort officiating the tournament is appreciated. Every ref has received a $10 credit on their CLUBWAKA account that can be applied to your next registration. Thank you to Nancy and Paola for the help collecting scores and
- Staff - Shout out to Troy Carter, Ryan Kiel, Tonya Joyner, and Angel Horowitz for working hard setting up fields, coordinating reffing, and managing the check-in table. I'm so fortunate to have a fantastic team.
- Brad Kirby - Not only did Brad spend his entire Saturday morning taking awesome photos, he graciously agreed to donate his payment to the charity. Really awesome. If you haven't already done so, please take a look at Brad's photos on Facebook. Like/Share your favorites and tag your friends!
- Sponsors - Thank you to our event sponsors - Viking Burger, Jungle Gym, David Tortolini Realty Group, Polka's Lawn Care, and Parkway Printshop. I have linked all of their Facebook pages, so go smash those like buttons and show these tremendous local businesses some love!
- Grouchy B's - Thank you for going above and beyond to feed us all day! So good and we hope to see them out at future tournaments!
- York County Parks & Rec - I appreciate the County for allowing us to get the tournament in this weekend, especially after all the rain on Friday. They could've easily canceled on us, but allowed us to push through.
- The Lijana Boys - Brian and Caron's sons did a fantastic job policing the trash all day long. It took quite a few trips to the dumpsters, but they left that park looking just as nice as it was in the morning. No 'evidence' left behind. :)
Special shoutout to the teams that did additional fundraising to support The Sentara Cancer Network. #EFFCANCER, Breastige, Miracle Misfits, and the Rack Pack all raised hundreds of additional dollars on game day. One team in particular went above and beyond. F.E.A.R. raised $1,250 making homemade t-shirts in the weeks leading up to the event and thanks to a generous company matching gift policy accounted for $3,750 donated!!! WOW! Great job Amy, Talbert, Danielle, and all the members of F.E.A.R.!
Amy already said they're planning on making this donation look like 'petty cash' next year. I can't wait to see what they do to top this!!!! Speaking of next year.... Be sure to save the date. The 2021 CLUBWAKA Kicks Cancer will be on Saturday, October 16th. RSVP on Facebook to get updates when registration opens. Hopefully next year the world will be in a better place and we'll make this the biggest and best event yet!
No doubt, I forgot someone above. If so, please charge it to the head and not the heart. Cancer has impacted us all in some form or another and it's so critical to continue supporting efforts to fight it. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is my favorite day of the year. To see the community come together and show love and support is an incredible feeling and to know that I had a small part in helping facilitate that is very fulfilling. Thank you again for being awesome.
