News Around the Peninsula - 3.6.2011

Let's run down some news, notes, and rumors from around the WAKA VA Peninsula league for this past week!

The Moose Knuckles made a major acquisition this weekend, signing OF Jesse Jones to a contract for the spring. Jones made his WAKA debut last season for The Emperors Club and is best known for driving in the tying and winning runs for the VIPs in the League Tournament Finals (see video of "The Play"). Having a clutch player who has played for a Wentworth Trophy winning side could be a huge asset for the newly formed Moose. After his clutch performance in the tourney, Jones held out for a higher salary, which the VIPs claimed they could not match due to salary cap restrictions. The Emperors Club head coach George Kiriazidis was not able to be reached for comment (probably because he was too busy having sex).

In other Moose Knuckles news, the team announced that it has come to terms with former TailGator Dennis Gholson for the Spring 2011 season. They also signed rookies Amanda Beierle and Marilee Columbus (special profile interview with the new coming soon!)

Dan Moore celebrated his b-day by impersonating
Rick James at the Jagernaut mardi gras party.
Over the weekend, the Jagernauts Kevin and Ashlee Gitkos hosted a Mardi Gras party at their beautiful Newport News home. I was lucky enough to be invited (i.e. Dottie was invited and I tagged along) and man, it was a shit show. Those Jagers know how to throw down. The biggest development to come out of the party (besides my hangover from drinking too many hurricanes) was the announcement that the Army will not be relocating the Gitkos' from the 757 for the next couple years!

Last week, we did an feature interview with Rumspringa's Ricky Holmes. In the interview, Holmes made the claim that he was "the best overall charger" in the league. The GMoT blog caught up with the VIPs' Anthony "Rocket Laser Cannon" Williams for his reaction. Williams simply held up his hand and flashed his 3 championship rings. Can't wait to see the battle for the 1st Team All-Peninsula team between these two talented chargers.

Are the Founders Cup World Champions coming to VA Peninsula? Recently Panik Attack captain McCoy Wood hinted that the team was contemplating competing for the prestigious Wentworth Trophy (Why not? It's the only trophy PA hasn't won).

Uh oh. Double Travis trouble...
Courtney Travis, the sister of 5 O'Clockers founder Britney Travis, recently turned 21 and is now eligible to play in WAKA. This spring, she will make her debut for the 5OC. But for those worried about two screaming Travis sisters on the sidelines this season, fear not. Travis assured me that the sisters have completely different personalities, "... Britney does all the yelling. I'm pretty quiet... usually."

Meanwhile, Jeff White continues to search for a team to join...
