Spring 2011 - Week 3 Recap

5 O'Clockers 4, Chubby Gangsters 3
The Clocker defense played nearly flawless
behind Carlyle for the first 4 innings.
This was a highly anticipated match for two of the teams ranked in the top 5 on the coaches poll. The Gangsters were looking to keep their undefeated streak alive, while the Clockers were looking to continue their resurgence as one of the league's premier teams. The Gangsters have put themselves in the position to succeed by carefully recruiting excellent athletes to the team from all over Hampton Roads. However in this game, it'd be those athletes' inexperience that cost them, as they've never seen pitching like Corey Carlyle's.

"Those pitches were crazy." AJ Derr said afterwards at Luckie's, "The way they cut right in across the plate was nasty."

Carlyle's pitching was overwhelming for the first four innings. But once the Gangbangers got through their lineup once, the top made some key adjustments. After getting a couple of runners on, Steve Midlik crushed a ball for a 3 run home run. It would not be enough though, as the Clockers held on for the win.

"How about I just kick a home run when I come up next?"

Just For Kicks 5, Rumspringa 2
Cashwell watches his kick rocket
 beyond the Rumspringa outfield.
Just For Kicks jumped out to a big lead to start out the game, highlighted by a JC Cashwell home run that he absolutely bombed over the heads of all of the outfielders. Rumspringa looked shell shocked by the awesome display of power, but was able to snap out of it near the end of the game. They rallied to score a couple runs late, and threatened to knock in some more, but the JFK defense held strong and earned their first win of the season.
A determined Wes McClain fires a pitch in week 3.

Jagernauts 6, Off in the Corner 0
While they didn't win the game, Off in the Corner managed to hold the Jagers to just 6 runs (a season low for RA for OitC) and they covered the points spread. So, they got that going for them... As for the specifics of the game, I'll refer you to Jagernaut GM Justin Littell's always excellent recap.
Jager 1B Mike Ramey catches a ball with a little help from his face.

Chicken Tetrazzini 5, Foul Balls 0
When asked what the key to success was for Chicken Tetrazzini, John Watson said, "Well, we didn't play like absolute shit. That's probably the biggest reason we won." Well, that usually helps... As for the Foul Balls,  a lack of alcohol contributed to a slow start, according to Nathaniel Johnson.

Jiminy Kick-It 3, Moose Knuckles 2
A bunch of confused Knucklers search for the bar at
Tabb Middle School on Wednesday.
"Moose Knuckles were missing 6 players and a field side bar," Marilee Columbus noted as a reason for the loss. But despite being undermanned and under-fueled, the Mighty Moose held a 2-1 lead through the first 3 innings. It wouldn't hold though, as Jiminy Kick-It broke through for 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th to take the lead. They would then close it out in the 5th to secure the victory in the battle of expansion teams.

The Emperors Club 2, Vicious & Delicious 1
A game this epic deserves it's own blog post. Check it out here.
The VIPs Keith Best and Josh Lively exchange high fives with VD after
their squads' big victory.
Battlestar Ballsacktica 11, Saved by the Balls 0
Nicole Plesha celebrates after succesfully
reaching firstbase.
Not much to say about this game other than the Battlestar laid the smackdown on Saved by the Balls. It was MKEH's first game against her old HRSSC teammates, and judging by the photos on her facebook page, the offense was humming. Literally every other picture is of a BB player either on base or running to the next one. Impressive showing from Andy Tapley's squad... Saved by the Balls was missing on of their key players, Allison Hund, who broke her foot in a training session that week. It appears that Hund may miss the rest of the season, but she is hopeful for a return in time for the tournament. Clearly, not having her available impacted the team.

New Kickheads on the Block 3, Jiminy Kick-It 2
NKotB flexed on JKI in the 5th inning.
JKI started out right where they left off in the 7:30 game, scoring 2 runs right in the top of the 1st inning. But after that, the New Kickheads defense settled down and didn't allow another run all game... With the score tied at 2-2, NKotB pulled out the walk-off win with a run in the bottom of the 5th. (Wish I could tell you more about this game, like who scored and what happened, but no one from either team let me know! You don't have to send me full recaps like Nathaniel or Justin, but at least send me a few quotes or stories!)

Vicious & Delicious 13, Foul Balls 1
FB gathers to discuss whether to accept
the mercy and head to Luckie's or keep
getting beat down playing kickball...
After dropping a close game against The Emperors Club, Vicious & Delicious was ready to bounce back with a vengeance. While mixing up their kicking lineup and fielding positions, they executed on both ends and completely dominated the Foulies. In the week 3 recap, I predicted that the game could result in a mercy ruling after 3 innings. (Note WAKA Rule 7.07: Any game may be ended at the discretion of the losing team, if losing by 12 or more runs at the end of any inning.) Well after 3 innings, the score was 9-0. Realizing that they had made it to the fourth without being mercy ruled, the Foul Balls sideline exploded as Andreas Beyersdorf lead the team in a chant of "WE MADE IT TO THE FOURTH! WE MADE IT TO THE FOURTH!" The Foulies were so amped up, that they actually strung together a couple of nice kicks and managed to score a run in the bottom of the inning, before moving the party to Luckie's to defend their newly earned "Bar Buzz" championship belt.
