Jagernaut Shorthanded Week 7 recap

Week 7 saw the Jagernauts in their second doubleheader of the season. The Jagernauts were extremely short handed in week 7, down the starting pitcher, Kim Merritt (scouting…and probably drinking), starting charger, Joe Mazzitti (drinking), relief picture Mike Seals (illness), outfielder Justin Arrington (not drinking), and outfielder Kyle Wright (drinking with Joe). For those keeping track at home, that’s half of the starting Jagernaut men. A statistical improbability, perhaps, but nevertheless, the game as they say, did go on. With that said, let’s down and dirty with the action.

Game 1 – Jagernauts 5 – Foul Balls 0

The Jagernaut adjustments led to a victory over a similarly short handed Foul Balls team. Even before the game started there were whispers of forfeit circulating around the field. However, determined to play, the Foulies fielded 9 people and made a game. The revamped top of the Jagernaut order did their job as leadoff man, Dan Moore along with Mike Ramey, bumped up in the order, both started the game off by scoring off of RKI’s by Katie Litle and Kevin Gitkos. (Justin’s side note: For all of you ladies out there, Dan’s OPS is an astronomical 1.875, with 11 runs scored through week 7.) The next few innings saw both defenses take over as going into the third inning it was still 2-0. In the third it was the middle of the lineup that took all of the credit for tacking on 3 insurance runs, by playing small ball. The Foulies threatened a few times, but never made it across home plate, and the game was secured in the Jagernauts favor with a final score of 5 – 0. Said 3rd basewoman, Liz Simms “I gotta give credit to the Foulies, they were shorthanded also, but they were so excited to play!” League Bar Buzz spokeswoman Trici Fredrick added “I think they could have had us if they would have suited up Zach Galifianakis, but as of game time, he was still MIA. I’m just glad they found him afterward!”

As a side note, check out Nathaniel Johnson’s take on the game from the Foul Ball point of view. His columns are always informative, introspective, and funny, and I enjoy reading them every week. Thanks Nathan!

Game 2 - Vicious and Delicious 5 – Jagernauts 0

The competition became tougher as the night wore on as the Jagernauts faced one of the juggernauts in the peninsula league. The Jagers had a hard time getting on base as VD only allowed 3 base kicks before the game was called in the fourth. However, the Jagernaut defense should be praised for holding VD to only 5 runs, down from their season average of almost 8, with highs of somewhere around 20.

MVP of the week goes to Alden Lawrence, who did a yeoman’s job of filling in for the starting pitching duties, blanking the Foul Balls and only allowing 3 runs from VD. While the score in the end was 5-0, a 5 man handicap was given (…by me… in this column) to the Jagernauts, to make out with the statistical tie. Coincidently, 5 runs was the second smallest run differential win for VD on the season…and that’s sayin’ something. Said Mike Ramey after the game “I felt like I was stuck in one scene from that Hall and Oats movie…you know one where that man keeps getting eaten? (Justin’s Note: Mike that was a “music video”) (and Justin’s more important Note: If I were eternally stuck in a movie, I’d want it to be the dance-off scene in House Party. You know the one I’m talking about….), but all in all, we played well. Hell I even made a play at charger, a position I have never played before!” Immediately after the game, coach Katie Litle reflected “VD’s a good team. We knew some of their weaknesses from playing on different teams from other leagues. I’m glad that we played so well against them. Time for the bar!”

With that said, week 8 brings the Jagernauts against Bryan Freed’s retooled Just for Kicks in a primetime matchup at Tabb Elementary. Will the Jagernauts be back at full strength? Will the Jagernauts finally beat JFK for the first time in franchise history? Will the Jagernauts resort to on-field exercises and clothing removal? (hey it happened folks..I got pictures). Will Justin’s new-found-love for 80’s YouTube videos end here? (oh who are we kidding, 80’s YouTube videos is the reason why the internet was invented, of course it won’t.) We’ll all find out next week!
