CommuniTyler!

by Karen Savell, Battlestar Ballsacktica

Where have my WAKA Wednesdays gone?? Even though I'm not kickballing, I still feel the need for a recap! So step into my office...yes, the one with an art desk and a bookshelf and a bowflex, and a sleeping cat and let me take you back...(insert fade to flashback here)...

It was only a year ago when Tyler Lorenzi was a kickballer. He knew how to have a great time and he never met a stranger.  Always kind and always had a smile on his face. He was a great teammate too, on and off the field. Apparently, his partying got him into some trouble here and there and was assigned community service. But thats where his troubles seemed to end and one of his callings began. He absolutely loved helping others in need so he began volunteering for community services any time he could.

Now, fast forward to May of last summer. A yacht with 10 people on it capsized in the night. 2 passengers didn't make it.  One was Ty Lorenzi. Now, I didn't have the pleasure of meeting him, but a lot of my teammates played kickball with him and knew him well. Some of his friends actually thought up an organization and called it CommuniTyler to spread Ty's selfless love and make a difference in surrounding communities. Its basically a community service effort motivated to pass on what Lorenzi left behind. The idea that started in his living room by a few friends grew to 400 participants in just a year!

On December 3, CommuniTyler hosted its first event working in tandem with Habitat for Humanity and Adopt-A-Spot. 400 participants united in more than 15 cities across the United States to paint shelters, plant trees, build trails and more. Yeah, read it again... 15 CITIES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES! And I (Karen Savell) along with Stephanie Wacek, Alison Easterday, and Philip Tanner with his girlfriend Colleen got to be a part of it!

When we arrived at the Habitat house, we did the Battlestar huddle and cheered BalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllSACKS!!!!!" and broke the huddle with a plan. The ladies would paint until their arms fell off and the men (I mean...the man!) would go around back and help put up posts to build a fence. So that's what we did...all morning....all afternoon...all day until our necks and arms were too sore to move! Thank goodness they didn't hand me a power tool or the house would not have been standing after I got through with it!  Just hand me a paint roller and no one gets hurt! We all had a great time painting, making a mess, refilling the paint pans, making a mess, painting some more and making a mess!  I think Alison Easterday wins the award of being the most painted! She was mostly white at the end of the day! (See damaging photos) Stephanie wins the award for the most paint in her hair, Phil wins the award for most muddy and I.....I still have a white speckled watch after 2 weeks of doing this project! (And I'm still trying to figure out how I got paint in my ear?!)

We made some good friends, too.  We all talked about Ty and how we met him, and things about him that made us laugh and just reminisced. Ty was on our kickball team, so it was only fitting to participate in this even out of respect for him as a friend and carry on what he loved most.

My teammates knew him well, and even though I didn't, I was proud to be a part of it. There's nothing better that says "Christmas" like helping a complete stranger who needs it. Ty figured it out, and I think we should follow in his memory.

CommuniTyler plans to hold a community project event every year. if you would like to be a part of it go to the CommuniTyler.org website and sign up to volunteer!

P.S.-I signed up long before I was invited to play on a team for the kickball tournament that Saturday and I felt so guilty not going to the tournament....until I had the experience of volunteering for CommuniTyler. Yes, I gave up playing kickball for volunteering! Am I sick or what?! Lol! Seriously, though, I had a fulfilling experience and I hope it catches on to the WAKA nation. I envite everyone to be a part of it! It's only once a year and it's for a great cause: To help people who really need it and to carry on Ty's legacy.  R.I.P. Ty

Kickball Trading Cards!

After getting a lot of positive feedback on the graphics in the All-Peninsula team posting, I decided to open it up and give everyone in the league the opportunity to get their very own WAKA Kickball trading card graphic just by supporting our "WAKA Kicks Cancer" Relay for Life team!

The reaction has been very positive so far. In less than a day since I posted it to the Facebook page, we've already received 9 donations totally $150 to benefit the American Cancer Society! And it's just the beginning, I'll keep cranking these babies out if you keep donating. To get your own player card, please visit the Commish's page and make a small donation!

For all the player cards, please be sure to check out the Official Fan Page of WAKA VA Peninsula (and while you're there, please be sure to 'like' it, if you haven't already!)

Thank you to everyone for supporting our Relay team! If you would like to get more involved, please consider joining the fundraising team as well! Together, we can kick cancer!

Fall 2011 All Peninsula: Honorable Mention

Earlier this week, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team All-Peninsula honorees were released on the GMOT. And while those 33 individuals who were voted in certainly had great seasons, with a league as deep and talented as this one, there are many awesome kickballers who didn't quite make the cut. Let's take a look at some of the players who came up just short.

Pitcher
Free Ballin's Mark Flores
Jimmy Wilcox, VD - Jimmy's one of the best in the country, but injuries and out of town trips late in the season limited him. Despite that, he still only missed making the 3rd team by the narrowest of margins. Only 1 point separated Wilcox and SnB's Brent Wentworth (3rd person alert!).
Will Monroe, JFK - Perhaps no one throws harder in VA Peninsula than Monroe. The southside native enjoyed an outstanding debut on the Peninsula this season.
Mark Flores, Free Ballin' - In his first season of WAKA Kickball, Flores turned a lot of heads. "Mark Flores is simply a phenomenal pitcher. His stuff is nasty." Lick It Captain George Kiriazidis said recently.
Mike Seals, Jagernauts - In addition to having a great season on the mound, Seals was an animal (get it?) at the plate two. In Jagers' week 8 doubleheader he actually had an eye-popping 9 RKIs.
Josh Joyner, Burning Bridges - The Bridges had one of the top defenses in the league and earned the number 1 seed. Joyner and his pitching had a lot to do with that success.

Catcher
One of the best action shots of the
season. Thanks MKEH!
Adam Flowers, 5 O'Clockers - Flowers was a human highlight machine for the resurgent Clockers, leading them back to the top of the standings. At the plate, he was a difficult out to. All-around fantastic season, and probably deserved a nod in the top 3 as much as anyone.
AJ Derr, Shake N Bake - Derr steadily improved as the season went on and developed into one of the best defensive catchers in the league. His performance in the tourney was vital to SnB holding up the trophy in the end.
James Salgado, VD - The speedy Salgado was just about automatic at the plate as the lead off kicker for Vicious & Delicious.
Roy Gilbert, Burning Bridges - Better known for being the guy who played with no shoes (that is before someone brought it to the league's attention that WAKA Rule 2.02 requires all players to wear athletic shoes). Gilbert is a very quick catcher with a good arm.
Michael Machie, Battlestar Ballsacktica - One of the most powerful kickers in the league. When field 1 was set up about 50 yards away from home in week 4, "The Machine" took advantage and crushed one over the wall on the first pitch for the home run.

Charger
Rumspringa's Ricky Holmes
Ricky Holmes, Rumspringa - One of the league's best. #81 just barely missed 3rd team in one of the deepest positions.
Bryan Turcotte, Shake N Bake - Turcotte spent 1/2 the season splitting time at C and in the OF. Once he started settling in at charger, he quickly developed into an elite player. With a fulls season at charger next spring, I'd expect Turcotte to earn a spot.
Manny Anderson, Kick Ass - Probably the fastest player in the entire league.
Matt Martin, Lick It Before You Kick It - You'd be hard pressed to find a charger who can throw the ball faster than Martin.
Joey Smith, VD - A pure athlete (have you seen his abs?!), Joey fielded balls that most chargers simply don't have the range for.
Joe Mazzitti, Jagernauts - Although solid in the field, Mazzitti really stood out as a consistent producer of runs at the top of the Jager order.
Nathaniel "Jorts" Johnson, Foul Balls - Consider his campaign to make honorable mention successful.
Frank Council, Free Ballin - Council impressed in his rookie season on both sides of the ball. Deadly accurate kicker. Strong arm. Charger is not an easy position to play, and he picked it up quickly.
Kyle Rowley, Battlestar Ballsacktica - Didn't have him on the ballot, and I got a lot of feedback afterwards for it on the Facebook page. He'll be a charger I'll have my eye on for next season.

Utility Players
Just a bit on the intense side.
Dr. Jeremy Pinier, JFK - The Flying Frenchman had another outstanding season at the plate for the highest scoring team in the league.
Bryan "NoShoes" Moore, VD - The self-proclaimed 'On-base Machine' backed it up. He always seemed to get on, and with his trademark aggressive style made teams pay.
Kim "Silver Bush" Merritt, Jagernauts - Pitched and charged for the Jagers. Sprayed line drives all over the field when he was up to kick.
Dave Dixon, VD - Versatile player who played first, pitcher, and the outfield, all at a high level, for the defending champs.
Justin Blair, Shake N Bake - One of the league's most powerful legs belongs to SnB's Blair.
Hassan Dubose, Kick Ass - The big man on KA was a deep threat when up to kick. Very good pitcher and first baseman in the field.
Mike Ramey, Jagernauts - Played several positions for the Jagers and was very good at all of them.
Jeff Pauley, 5 O'Clockers - The veteran Pauley pitched, charged, and roamed the outfield for the 5OC. Offensively, he had one of his best seasons yet. His new and improved line drive while kicking away was dangerous to opposing defenses.
Adam Henry, Chicken Tetrazzini - Pitcher. First Base. Outfield. Whatever the Angry Birds needed, Henry was there.
Kris Hodge, Chicken Tetrazzini - Probably the MVP of CT. Not sure, but he may have played every single position at least once this season for CT.

1st Base
Ryan McNally, Lick It Before You Kick It - In his first WAKA season, McNally showed why he was highly recruited by Lick It.
Dennis Gholson, Foul Balls - In addition to being the league's version of Darius Rucker, Gholson was one of VA Peninsula's best power kickers.

Outfield
BB's Travis Cobb
Nick Sutton, JFK - For most of the season, Sutton kicked 2nd in the league's top offense, laying down great bunts and getting on base consistently.
Tommy "Shit Kan" Zuppke, VD - Not only can this man party with the best, but he can ball too. Very quality player.
Keith Morehart, Chubby Gangsters - Yet another transplant from the other inferior league. Morehart came in and was an impact player for the Gangbangers.
Rusty Wallace, Rumspringa - Rusty covers a lot of ground in the 'Springa outfield and is as sure handed as they come.
Jeff White, 5 O'Clockers - The Smooth Operator.
Ryan Schmid & Travis Cobb, Burning Bridges - Cobb and Schmid were both offensive standouts for the top seeded Bridges in their debut season. I have very few doubts that either man will make an All-Peninsula team in the future once the voters see them some more.
Andrew Swenck, JFK - The best ginger who is over 6'5'' in the entire league.
Phillip Tanner, Battlestar Ballsacktica - Tanner is a great athlete who produces at the plate. Strong leg.
Myung Bae, Free Ballin - An all around offensive threat. This soccer player can place a ball wherever he wants.

Females
The Nard Dogg.
Amy Lowe, Lick It Before You Kick It - No female player is as solid and reliable in the outfield as Lowe.
Courtney Travis, 5 O'Clockers - As a former softball player, Travis is a gamer. Few lady kickballers run the bases as smart as she does.
Sarah Crecelius, JFK - One of JFK's many outstanding women in their stable.
Julie Kittelson, Jagernauts - Julie kicked third in the lineup for one of the league's most productive top of the orders.
Jen Nardi, Foul Balls - Nardi pitched, and did so well, for the Foulies all season. One of the best pure kickballers in the league.
Nina Richardson, Shake N Bake - Richardson had a great season for the champs.
Kecia Warner, Rumspringa - A summer job cheerleading for the UFL's Virginia Destroyers had Warner coming into this Fall season in great shape. It paid off as she was a solid contributor to Rumspringa.
Elizabeth Ricker, Chubby Gangsters - Her teammates were singing her praises on Facebook and lobbying for a spot in the AP team for this newcomer. One to watch out for.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more players deserving of recognition. For the full All-Peninsula voting results, please see this google doc.

Fall 2011 All-Peninsula: 1st Team

Here we go! After 76 ballots were cast online, the following 11 individuals were determined by their peers to be the best of the best this Fall at their positions. Without further ado, I present to you the All-Peninsula 1st Team.

(Previously on the GMOT: 3rd Team and 2nd Team All-Peninsula Teams Announced)

The number 1 charger spot went to the most dangerous offensive weapon in the league. Wes McClain is an assassin at the plate when he's got runners on base. The accomplished soccer vet strikes low hard line drives with consistent power and precise placement. It didn't matter who was on the mound pitching to him, McClain had his way with them and was a major source of RKI's for the league's top offense... Defensively, Wes has developed into an elite charger. Quick to the ball and with a cannon for an arm, he robbed many kickballers who would have otherwise been safe. Wes McClain was a superstar on both sides of the ball for JFK this season, and is recognized throughout the league as one of the best.

Runs were hard to come by against Just For Kicks this Fall (only 1.18 rapg, first in the league), and their catcher Eric Stevens was a big reason for that. Stevens, affectionately known as "The Pirate", explodes out of the box and snatches up opposing players bunts, firing lasers to first base. He may have the quickest reflexes in VA Peninsula. At least once a game, he'll barely snatch a pop up just before it touches the ground. What probably stands out most about Eric, is that his motor never stops. He hustles on every single play and rarely lets his focus slip. In doing so, he set the tone for his entire team and earned a spot on the All-Peninsula team.

It's no secret that the backbone of Shake N Bake was the play of the ladies. All in all, SnB has three female players who placed in the All-Peninsula voting, including Jiselle Anderson. Anderson is one of the most athletic women in the league. Great skill and instincts. This lifelong sports enthusiast is always in the right position and rarely makes an error, physically or mentally. In fact, I don't recall her making a single mistake in the field all season long, as she patrolled right field for the Bakers. This consistent fielding helped SnB win the championship this season. In the 5th inning of the Final Game, Anderson made a sliding catch on her knees to secure the third out of the inning and send the game to OT, and keeping Shake N Bake's title hopes alive... Offensively, she uses places the ball well and uses A+ speed to reach base. Once on base, she's always a threat to score and many rallies started with Anderson's turn in the lineup. Just ask the Jagernauts. On August 31st, Jiselle went 3-3, with 2 runs and an RKI, leading the team to a big early season victory. All around great player.

This seasoned kickballer continues to impress her peers from across the league. Noelle Walsh is a very well rounded player. At the plate, perhaps no girl in the league consistently lays down a bunt as well as Walsh. It seems her bunts are always crisp, on the ground, and close to the line, whether it's going down 3rd or sacrificing down 1. In the field, Noelle plays shortstop in a very efficient and mistake free manner. If you make the mistake of trying to test her out there, you will be disappointed. Simply put, Noelle catches anything kicked in her direction. One of the smartest players in the game, she's always aware of the situation and knows what to do when the ball is in her hands.

Katie Litle, as you can see from the picture above, is a girl who is not afraid to get down and dirty. This fiery competitor goes all out and leaves everything out on the field for the Jagernauts. She's a vocal leader for the 'Nauts, encouraging the team and rallying them... Offensively, Litle stands out for her all around ability and skill. She can lay down a bunt with the best of them or kick away with power if needed. (Just check out this 2 run double she smacked against KA). All in all this season, Litle kicked 0.617 and drove in 6 runs. Very impressive production from any female.

For the first month of the season, Tracy Colby was in a bit of a funk at the plate. She uncharacteristically struggled to get on base, but once the weather started cooling down, Tracy started heating up. For the last 6 games of the season, Colby was as good, if not better than any female player in the league. She went 8 for 11 (0.727), scored 4 runs, and drove in 3. The hot streak continued on into the End of Season tournament, where she painted the lines with picture perfect bunts and helped spark several SnB rallies throughout the day. Her consistency all day opened a lot of eyes and really impressed the All-Peninsula voters and earned her a spot on the 1st team.

Josh Waldrop is more than just a pretty face. This dude can ball. Perhaps no center fielder covers more ground than Waldrop. On more than one occasion, I saw kickers smack nice line drives that looked as though they'd fall into the gap, only to be robbed by a streaking Waldrop. On offense, Josh is a deadly line drive kicker who has a unique ability to find the hole in any defense. And while he used to be a one dimensional player that only kicked away, that is no longer the case. Waldrop has developed a nice slap bunt that he pushes down the line consistently. Combined with his speed, it's nearly impossible to stop. Simply put, Josh can kill you more than one way. This season he went 15-19 (0.789), scored 6 runs, and drove in 9. This production was undeniably a big reason the Clockers re-emerged as one of VA Peninsula's elite teams.

If I was a mad scientist who was attempting to make the ideal offensive weapon for kickball, I'd take an accomplished soccer player and combine them (but not combine like the guy did in "Human Centipede" did) with a competitive softballer . Well, that's exactly what you get with John LaNeave. LaNeave played soccer most of his life, all the way up through college. The soccer background has given him superior foot skills. He's equally adept at slapping a bunt down 3, or cranking a line drive deep... After college, John got into competitive softball, and joined teams that traveled and competed in tournaments all across the country. LaNeave's softball experience helps him to aggressively, but smartly, run the bases, always helping Shake N Bake manufacture runs... In the outfield, LaNeave covers a lot of ground and is as reliable as they come. In just his third season of kickball, he's clearly established himself as one of the league's best all-around players.

As a WAKA rookie, the outgoing Scott Duncan got a lot of people's attention right away with his flamboyant tights and headbands. But it wasn't long before Duncan started getting people's attention with his play on the field as well. The skilled soccer player was recruited to JFK by Wes McClain and Nikki LeBlanc, and immediately exceeded expectations. In my opinion, Duncan is one of the best bunters in the league. No matter how difficult the pitch, he seems to effortlessly handle it and slap it right down the line, impossible to defend. In addition to being an outstanding bunter, Duncan is also blessed with one of the strongest legs in the league. Just ask Rumspringa. In week 4, Scott got a hold of one of Matt Wellbrock's pitches and absolutely crushed it for a home run. In fact, I'm not sure the ball has even landed yet... On defense, Duncan was a jack of all trades. He plugged into the D and played great wherever JFK needed him, whether it was playing first, catcher, charger, or patrolling the outfield. Pretty sure the only position, Scott didn't play was pitcher this season, making him the true definition of a 'utility' player.

No player received more votes for the All-Peninsula team than Shake N Bake's Patrick Jones. Jones received 35 first place votes, and 20 second place votes. He was 99 points ahead of the 2nd Team 1B, Allen Walker. It's not too hard to see why he has the respect and admiration of the entire league. Simply put, Patrick Jones as a first baseman, is a man without peers. Defensively, PJ's trademark is his diving stretch to catch balls while keeping his toe on the bag. No one is as good at catching an off target throw and making an out out of an otherwise costly error. Fellow first teamer Scott Duncan described Jones by saying, "His stretches and solid hands are awesome!" (99% sure he was talking about kickball and not something else)... And while Jones' defense gets the majority of the attention, what is somewhat over looked is his offensive abilities. PJ is a versatile player who can either bunt or kick away with equal skill. He lead Shake N Bake in kicking average (0.792) and sacrifices (4). He was also 2nd on the team in runs (9) and RKIs (10). In the tournament, he was a key contributor to Shake N Bake's first ever Wentworth Trophy®. In addition to his stellar defense all day, Jones scored the first run of the Finals and kicked in the winning run. All in all, it was another excellent season for one of the all time greats in WAKA VA Peninsula.

When the season started, Daniel Reyes played with the defending champions, Vicious & Delicious. But after week 1, Reyes was traded to the 5 O'Clockers for the rights to a future 1st round draft pick. The trade was a huge boost to the Clockers, as they gained one of the league's elite pitchers to compliment their great infield defense. Reyes is a pitcher who throws hard pitches with lots of movement and bounce that tends to cross up the kicker in the box. The result is several botched kicks that come in off the shin and leads to unintended pop ups. Defensively, no pitcher is as good off the mound as Reyes. He's like having a 2nd charger out on the field as he is quick to jump out and make a play. It's no coincidence that with Reyes on the mound, the Clockers limited opponents to less than 2 runs a game.

There you have it! The 2011 All-Peninsula team! Congrats to everyone who made the teams and thank you to everyone who voted and contributing... Later this week, we'll have another post with some of the honorable mentions who just didn't quite make the teams.

Fall 2011 All-Peninsula: 2nd Team

Time to take a look at the 2nd Team All-Peninsula team honorees! If you missed the 3rd Team selections, click here.

It'd been over a year since Randy Devlin played in VA Peninsula, and he came back strong. Although he missed a good portion of the season, Devlin made an impact for the Clockers and helped lead them to their best season in years. As a charger, Randy is extremely quick and utilizes his low center of gravity (polite way of saying he's short) to scoop up balls and fire them to first base for outs. On offense, he's a speed denom at the top of the order who is almost automatic when he gets his bunt down. Although not asked to often due to his spot at the top of the order, Devlin can kick away as well. All in all, it was good to have Randy back in the league this season (except for when he was throwing me out on my bunts).

Roger Jackson once again encroached his way onto the All-Peninsula team. I joke that he encroached, because it's a common complaint of opponents who face Jackson. Perhaps no catcher is as quick as Jackson, and he has a motor that never stops running, so it just seems like he is encroaching all the time. At least once a game, if not more, Roger will pull a crazy diving catch or wicked spin throw out of his ass to rob a kicker of a would be single. His consistently stellar play behind the plate is one of the main reasons Lick It was so successful this year.

Kate Barcus made her debut on the Peninsula in the Fall 2010 season, playing with Victorious Secret and had a great year. Shortly before the following spring season was scheduled to kick off, Barcus injured her ankle badly and needed surgery. Surgery which caused her to miss several months of kickball. She trained hard and rehabbed her ankle all spring and summer to return this Fall. Joining the defending champion VD squad, she contributed on both sides of the ball with great defense and consistent bunting. The veteran kickballer, who was a member of the 2008 Founders Cup World Champions Frosty Balls, even played first base for Vicious & Delicious in the End of Season tournament when the team was shorthanded. On the whole Kate is just a competitive person who drives for success on the field, and she certainly deserves the honor of making the 2nd Team after her hiatus.

Nikki LeBlanc is a warrior. One of the most competitive women to play the game, she is a vocal leader (very vocal, just ask Wes McClain) out in the field for JFK. As a co-captain of Just For Kicks she helped create the lineups and defensive alignments for the team that lead the league in runs scored and least runs allowed. A true kickball junkie, Nikki plays in multiple leagues and travel tournaments across the country. And much like she does Wednesday nights, she constantly impresses. LeBlanc is a skillful bunter and a good kicker. Perhaps what stands out most is her ability to patrol the outfield and make great running catches. Nikki is just an all around great superstar.

Nicole "Pure" Plesha is probably the kickballer who has most improved her game. She made her debut last Fall for Victorious Secret and was considered an average female player, at best. But since then, after moving to Battlestar Ballsacktica in the spring, has continued to work hard and has developed into a fine kickballer. With above average speed and good foot skills, Plesha is a threat to get on base anytime she comes up to the plate.

Maybe the only thing better than Jill Simms' on the kickball field is Jill Simms behind the mic at karaoke (seriously, she sounded just like Gwen Stefani when she sang "I'm Just A Girl"). As a part-time yoga instructor, few players in the league are more athletic than Jill. Throughout the season, she laid perfect bunts down the lines and made life difficult for opposing defenses.

One of the more underrated players in the league is Justin Arrington of the Jagernauts, probably due to his laid back nature. If you were observe him in a typical game, you'd see him, hands in his pockets aimlessly strolling the outfield (or in his words, manicuring the grass). You wonder if he's even paying attention at all. That is until someone tries to test him and kicks away. Arrington is all over it, running down balls and making outs. Offensively, Arrington is a solid contributor down in the Jager order. Kicking near the end of the Jager lineup, Justin got on base nearly two thirds of the time (0.647 avg) and drove in 6 runs. Yet despite his production and the multiple complaints to the league office about his playing time, Arrington continues to kick deep in the order. When will Justin Littell come to his sense?!?

As far as personalities go the pair of  2nd team outfielders couldn't be any different. While Arrington is laid back and cool, Chris "Bundy" LeBlanc is intense and emotional. Bundy loves the game of kickball and plays the game with all of his heart and soul. He's a guy who consistently rips low, hard line drives and lays down excellent bunts down. VD scored a lot of runs this season and Bundy was a big part of that success.

The speedy Dan Moore is one of the premiere lead off kickers in VA Peninsula. According to Jagernaut captain Justin Littell, Moore kicked 0.786 and scored an eye-popping 17 runs. His production is a big reason why the Jagernauts averaged a franchise record 5.36 runs per game. On the defensive side, Dan rotated among several positions. First base, outfield, even some charger and pitcher. He's a jack of all trades.

This veteran kickballer has been playing since some of the earliest seasons of the league, and he only continues to get better and better. Allen Walker has one of the most powerful swings in Peninsula and kicked in the heart of the high powered Clocker offense. With the efficient top of the order, Walker came up with runners in scoring position often and he made teams pay. He lead the Clockers with 12 runs driven in. Two of those runs came under the most critical of situations. On November 16th, the Kickheads held a 1-0 lead over the Clockers with 2 outs in the 5th inning. Allen came up to kick, one runner on base, and a lot on the line. An NKotB win would've dropped the Clockers from the #2 seed to the #4 seed... So with the pressure on, Walker unleashed a bomb to deep left center that cleared the outfielders. He came all the way around the bases to score on the walk off home run. Clutch.

Death from above. Standing in at 6'7'', this sky scraping hurler is one of the hardest throwing pitchers in the league. He grips the ball with his big hands and winds up high, getting plenty of power and torque behind every pitch. Shaw simply overpowers kickers and forces a lot of poor kicks... Early in his kickball career Shaw struggled at the plate. With his size 29 shoes (approximate), it was a challenge to control the ball. But with lots of hard work and coaching, he's become a weapon on offense. Able to paint the lines with crisp bunts or kick away with power. Daniel Shaw is a well rounded kickballer, and his peers have taken notice, naming him to his first All-Peninsula team.

The 1st Team Nominees will be posted later this weekend! Who will be named to the top honor in kickball?

Fall 2011 All-Peninsula: 3rd Team

The All-Peninsula team is simply put, the best kickballers in VA Peninsula. These are the players who have had the best seasons all around and are recognized for their outstanding play. There are only 33 players honored for standing out at their positions, so to earn a spot on one of the three teams is quite an accomplishment.

WAKA VA Peninsula Kickball had 16 teams and 290 players playing. From top to bottom, we had the most competitive season to date, with close games on the schedule every week. In seasons past, I've always decided the All-Peninsula Team based on my observations, scouting, and feedback from players. This season though, there were so many players that had great seasons, that I decided to open it up for the entire to league to cast their votes. 76 ballots were cast online in just over 3 days. Let's take a look at the results, starting with the 3rd team...

The Chubby Gangsters did not win a lot of games this Fall, but that's not for a lack of production from their standout charger, Steve Midlik. Many kickers who have placed perfect bunts down the line have had been thrown out by this gunslinger. Midlik's got one of the most powerful legs in the league, in addition to his strong arm. When he's up to kick, opposing defensive coordinators wish they could play 12 or 13 players in the field, because 11 just doesn't seem like it's fair. Back your outfielders up, and the skilled soccer player will slap a line drive in front of them. Push them up, and Midlik will blast one over their heads. Or in the words of CG teammate Keith Morehart, "He can put that shit wherever he wants to."

Major Kevin Gitkos is the glue that holds the Jagernaut defense together, as their vocal leader out in the field. He explodes out of the box, scoops up bunts, and uses his strong arm to nail runners going to first. Offensively, he is a skilled bunter, quick to first, and can kick away with power. Kicking in the heart of the order, Gitkos produced a lot of RKIs that directly resulted in wins for the 'Nauts.

Lick It's Lorraine Adkins kicked in the 3 spot all season for an offense that averaged 5.55 runs per game. As a woman kickballer, Adkins had an average higher than most guys in the league, kicking 0.667. Pretty impressive considering the last couple of weeks of the season, she played with an injured ankle that severely limited her ability to run. As if getting on base 2/3rds of the season wasn't impressive enough, Lorraine's biggest contribution to the team was her ability to lay down the perfect sacrifice bunt. Her 7 sacs were no doubt among the league leaders and kept the LIBYKI runners in scoring position.

Jen Epps, as the leadoff kicker for NKotB, was a terror on the basepaths. She can lay down some sweet bunts and uses her speed to get on. Once on base, she relies on her extensive softball experience to aggressively, but smartly, advance. Epps talent and performance has definitely earned the respect of the league. Despite not a single one of the 76 ballots being cast by a member of the Kickheads (which means she didn't get to benefit from any homer votes), she easily landed a spot in the top 12 girls in the league.

The Shake N Bake offense was a well oiled machine for most of the season, scoring 72 runs (2nd in the league). A huge driver of this success was the production of Kim Koricich near the top of the lineup. She got on base 15 times this season and came around to score on 8 of those trips, which was 3rd highest on SnB. Lightening fast and skilled with her feet, she didn't just score runs, but she drove them in to. Koricich kicked in 5 runs this season... Defensively, Kim has great instincts and has on more than one occasion made highlight worthy running catches in the outfield. Kim Koricich is the total package and definitely a deserving member once again of an All-Peninsula nod.

Prior to this season, Mary Katherine Evans broke off from Battlestar Ballsacktica and founded the expansion team Free Ballin'. She took with her a handful of Battlestar teammates with her to the new team, but perhaps none more important than Lisa Rock. Rock is a, uh, rock for the Ballers. The impact player can lay down the perfect bunt or can punch line drives all around the field. Her talent is undeniable.

The Juice was on the loose all season long. Thomas Welch kicked an astonishing 0.905 (19 for 21) for the entire season. Seriously. 19 for 21. Welch only made 2 damn outs all year. He lead the the team with 10 runs scored from the lead off position and played great defense roaming the outfield... And if all of that doesn't impress you, than consider the fact that he did it while receiving treatment for cancer. Yes, the fucking cancer. Just prior to the season starting, Welch went to see his doctor about a nagging shoulder pain. While the doc was reviewing the x-ray, he noticed a lump in Juice's throat and wanted to run additional tests. It turns out that Welch had a cancerous tumor on his lymph-node, which required him to have them removed completely. Thankfully, the growth was detected early enough. Juice had a successful surgery in September that resulted a wicked scar extending across his entire throat and left him voiceless for weeks... And that tough son of a bitch only missed one game! Getting on base 90% of the time. Scoring double digit runs. Playing world class defense. Kicking cancer's ass. I don't know if a season can get any more impressive than that.

Speaking of cancer, now would be a great time to plug our WAKA Kicks Cancer Relay for Life Team. As a league, we're committed to participating in this fundraising event in the spring to benefit the American Cancer Society. If you'd like to join the team or if you'd like to donate, please go here. Your support is greatly appreciated!

In addition to being the league's best George Michael impersonator, Phil Nadolski is also one of the best outfielders. He's an all around player who has 5 tools. He can lay down solid bunts, kick deep line drives, has good speed, covers a lot of ground in the outfield, and has a great arm (on occasion, JFK will even have Nadolski pitch a few innings). In what is rumored to be his last season playing WAKA on the Peninsula (Phil has recently said that he is planning on moving back home to Michigan), he went out with a bang and earned the respect of the All-Peninsula voters.

Despite missing 1/2 the season, JC Cashwell still got enough votes to earn a spot on an All-Peninsula team. This is a testament to the dominance that is JC. Perhaps the best kickball player I've ever seen, this hard throwing lefty can completely take over a game. Whether it's on the mound or playing charger or at first, JC is an impact player... Offensively, underneath his trademark grey sweatpants (seriously, it doesn't matter if it's 100 degrees out or 50 degrees out, he always rocks them), is a powerful left leg that booms balls deep to right field. That's if he's not laying down nice bunts and using his speed to get on... JFK had an awesome season, leading the league in runs scored (75) and runs allowed (13). It's scary to think about what those numbers would have been if this Kickball Beast would have been able to make it out to more games.

Never judge a book by it's cover. It's easy to look at Matt Barcus and write him off as just a goofball. The mullet. The mustache. The outfits. The loud outburts. The milk gallon jug full of orange juice and vodka... You wouldn't think he'd be a good kickballer just based on outward appearances, but you'd be wrong. When "The Experience" is on the field, he's a baller. He's sure handed at first and can stretch to make difficult catches. Don't think about going first to third on him either. He's got an A+ arm and makes even the fastest runners pay if they try to test it... Offensively, Barcus has the ability to bunt, although he usually prefers to kick away. And who can blame him? If I could kick as far as he could, I'd be tempted to let it rip every time too.

HOLY SHIT!!!!!!1!!! This is the greatest moment of my life to be named to one of the All-Peninsula teams! Time to go update my resume! (Seriously, there are a lot of great pitchers in this league. I am very honored to be considered one of the best by the people who voted).

Going out of town this weekend to see the Jets play the Skins up north, so I don't know when the 2nd and 3rd teams will be posted (sorry). Look for it by Monday though. In the meantime, please comment on the blog or on Facebook with your thoughts on the 3rd Team selections!
