VA Raptor - Week 1 Roundup

Winter kickball is definitely for the hardcore addicts. And that was clearly on display this weekend for the kick off of the first every season of WAKA's VA Raptor League. Despite rainy weather and temperatures that dipped into the 40s by the end of the afternoon, the Raptor players took to Facebook and lobbied for the opportunity to play. Commissioner Wentworth (3rd Person Alert!) is a man of the people and rules the division with benevolence, so when he heard the outcry of kickball starved maniacs pleading for the games to go on, he responded.

"Let's play some kickball this afternoon."

And play kickball we did. Let's take a look at the week 1 results!

Foot Snipers 5, All Up In The Bunt 0
All Up In The Bunt has put together an impressive group of athletes, and will be looking to establish themselves as contenders. But in the first contest, they ran into a buzzsaw. Foot Snipers captain Dave Dixon put together a hell of a team and they executed their game plan well, despite the weather... The game was a little closer than the score would have you believe. In a pivotal moment of the game, Dom Smith tried to score from 2nd base, but was gunned out at home in a bang bang play by the Snipers' PJ Jones after a deflection by catcher Matt Coup

Chubby Gangsters 3, Whiskey Kick 2
Whiskey Kick looked to have their first game in the bag headed into the 5th inning with the lead. But on a day when they celebrated teammate Erika Chacra's birthday, the Chubby Gangsters would not be denied. Newcomer Geoff Morehart crushed a walk off home run to give the Gangbangers the win.

Frosty Ballin' 6, Kick Ass 3
Early in the game, the teams were knotted up at 3 all, but the Frosty's pulled away late and earned a big win.

Just For Kicks 8, Peninsula Pounders 4
The Pounders had a lot of buzz coming into the season, and JFK was determined to make a statement. Offensively, Just For Kicks painted the lines with perfect bunts, put pressure on the defense, and took advantage of some uncharacteristic errors. They jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead through 3 innings. The Pounders didn't quit, scoring 3 runs in the 5th, but it was too little, too late. JFK closed them out strong.

Chubby Gangsters 12, Foul Balls 6
Not a whole lot of defense being played in this one, as both offenses opened it up. Both teams combined for a league high 18 runs. The Foulies couldn't keep the pace with the Gangsters in the shootout, giving up 12 runs to their 6.

Frosty Ballin' 11, Whiskey Kick 1
Frosty Ballin' was just getting warmed up in their first game. By the 2nd game of the double header, they were ready to roll. They opened a can of whoop as on WK. Only a late inning scamper around the bases by Mike Ramey prevented the shutout.

Let's take a look at the week 1 table...

After Party Report
We had a BIG turnout for week 1, with over two thirds of the league, and representation from each team, out to celebrate at Luckie's. Hope everyone enjoyed the pitchers and the appetizers. Man, I'm not going to lie. Walking into Luckie's and seeing all the WAKA shirts mingling, drinking, laughing, and having a good time makes me happy, and it reminds me why I do this. I love our league... The happy feelings might have gotten me a little carried away, as I got drunk yesterday. Next thing I know, it's almost 9 PM and the place is full of people in club clothes. Funny feeling being in Luckie's on a Saturday night wearing sweat pants and a kickball tee... It spawned the first every "After 8 PM" photo posted to the Facebook group by Whiskey Kick's Joe Lemanski

3 Pounders and 3 Whiskey Kickers were still standing at Luckie's "late".

In a related story, I spent all day Sunday nursing a hangover.

Reffing Shout Out!
Big thanks to the refs. The 2 PM games definitely were a little tougher, weather-wise, than the earlier games. It was tough for a bit being out there as a player. JFK's Noelle Walsh put it best, "This is my 3rd winter season, and today was absolutely the MOST MISERABLE day for playing I've seen yet! Mad props to Anthony Williams, Matthew Coup, and others who had to stay out there to ref other games! Much appreciated guys!"

Sometimes Refs are taken for granted. I want to echo Noelle's sentiment. Thanks Foot Snipers, KA, and AUITB for not only reffing the late games, but breaking down the fields afterwards as well. Very much appreciated.

Quote of the Week
From the Chubby Gangsters' Keith Morehart's post on the Facebook group page
"I f**king love kickball! Even in the cold ass rain!"
Welcome to winter kickball, Mr. Morehart.

That's all for this week. Stay tuned to the blog for recaps, previews, and other items from league volunteers throughout the week!
