Rusty Balls (Battlestar Week 1 Recap)

Recap by Karen "Silent Killer" Savell
Hot damn! WAKA Wednesdays are back!! It's good to see people moving to the groove of some jamming music whilst playing a 5th grader's game again. [Editor's note: Week 1's playlist was awesome... don't you think??] Everybody take a big sigh of relief! (Inhale.....hold it.....wait for it........Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!) Can you smell those beautiful grassy fields at War Memorial Stadium?! Are you with me?! Good! Let's talk about some kickball!!

Well, the rivalry between Free Ballin' and Battlestar continued as they played the 2nd game on Field #2 Wednesday night. The Free Ballin' crew took the field first and the Ballsacks got down to some busy kickin'. Michael Machie got on base as first kicker, then Mark Thompson made his debut as a Ballsack as second kicker and bunted to the charger who promptly overthrew first allowing Michael to run all the way home for the first score of the game. BOO-yah!!! That Mark Thompson is a deceivingly quick little guy! And Mike has an unusual pep in his step these days. Perhaps it has something to do with being married an entire 96 hours?! Hmmmmm...anyway, Free Ballin' was able to hold the Ballsacks to just the one run that inning.

Then it happened. The crappy inning that you just can't seem to get out of. Before it was all over, Team FB scored 4 runs. Battlestar showed that they were a little rusty, but slowly, surely.....EVENTUALLY got 3 outs to end the inning. Whew!!

The next couple of innings were played with a tight defense on each side. Andy Tapley's awesome pitching skills caused a strike out...then again, there was a walk in there somewhere, so, um... they cancel each other out, right?! *snicker* With the bases loaded in the 3rd inning, the Ballsacks STILL managed to hold them to only one run.

With Free Ballin' up at 5-2, it was time for Battlestar to make a come back. In the bottom of the 3rd, Mike Graziano made a spectacular sliding catch in left center field! Oh Emmmm Geeeee!!! Later in the post-game press conference, he was asked how he made that catch. "Well, It's unfortunate that I have this massively muscular chest because balls tend to bounce right off of me, so I've gotten a few tips from the Silent Killer and Jason Lantz, but mostly from Brandon Silver. He taught me how to get in touch with my beard powers, and if I keep training with him, I think I can be a top contender. Also, Geoff Morehart threatened me by giving me Kettlebell workouts and burpees until I can't move if I don't catch the ball..." Nicole Plesha was asked if she was happy for Mike and her response was, "F*** yeah!!!". Also, the Silent Killer was asked if she was really out on the tag at 2nd base. She shook her head no. The interviewers congratulated her on the 4th inning catch and she shyly smiled and quietly said "Thanks".

In fact, a lot of catches were made in the outfield by MVPeter Kuhr, Jason Lantz, and the Silent Killer (aka Karen Savell). NOTHING was dropped in the outfield....at all! Great plays were made by Kyle Rowley at charger. He took a year off to be with his wife and stuff. Now he's back and better than ever!! And stuff.... Also, Geoff Morehart made his debut as a Ballsack as catcher and charger. This lefty means business!! He's super fast on both sides of the ball and Battlestar is proud to have him!

With the Ballsacks back to the top of their line up in the 5th inning, they had a good chance to make a comeback. And comeback, they did!! Well, almost....they brought in 2 more runs before FB shut them down. It was almost a perfect set up where it would have been bases loaded and Jason "Steel Toe" Lantz was going to be clean up kicker, but a bunt play, before Jason got to kick, fell apart and allowed for the 3rd out and an end to the game. So close and yet, so far!!! Ballsacks fall to team FB with the score of 5-4.

Even though these guys are vicious rivals (bwahahahaaa!!), both teams showed their magnanimity (Google it) as they hugged and high fived after the game....and stuff. Until we meet again!!

Peace out, WAKA dudes!
