WAKA VA Freedom launched this weekend on a perfect 70 degree spring day! With a great combination of veteran 'ballers and rookies, there are high expectations for fun this season. And if week 1 is any indicator, we won't be dissapointed... Let's take a look at some of the results from this Sunday.
Drunk & Trying to Score 9, Balls Deep 8
We kicked off the inaugural VA Freedom season with two teams making their kickball debuts. With both teams lacking experience, this game was a wild one. With some timely kicking and some deep bombs, D&T2S put up 6 runs in the first inning and another 3 runs in the 3rd. Despite facing a big run deficit, Balls Deep kept their heads in the game and chipped away at the lead, scoring 1-2 runs in every inning. In the end it wasn’t enough, as Drunk & Trying to Score (or as one player was overheard saying, Hungover & Trying to Score) held on for the ‘W’.

Andreas Beyersdorf put his body on the line Sunday afternoon, taking a wicked knee to the skull at first base, but still holding on to the ball for the out. Unlike those sissies in the NFL though, Beyersdorf remained in the game. Inspired by his sacrifice and their own personalized ‘walk up’ music, the Rexes came out on top over the Sexes.
Peninsula Pounders 8, Don’t Make Us Angry 1
This was a game that was closer than the final score would have you believe. The Hulks played outstanding defense and held the Pounders to no runs through the first 2 innings. Charger Michael Wezensky and Pitcher Matt Wellbrock made several highlight plays, snagging line drives and killing Peninsula rallies. But the defense could not hold. In the 3rd inning, Keith Best, Poe Leggette, and Kecia Warner loaded the bases. Emily Cook then came up and placed a perfect bunt up first that was fielded by Angries 1B. He then pegged Cook for the out, however the ball deflected off of her, all 3 base runners came around to score. Once the flood gates were open, the strong Pounders would take advantage, cruising to the victory.

The ladies in black scored the victory against the rookies on Balls Deep in epic fashion. With 2 outs, Britney Travis kicked a bases clearing triple to drive in all 3 SWooHR runs!
