BSH Rout Ball & Chain Gang in Debut, 17-4

HAMPTON, VA - In a match up between two teams making their VA Peninsula debuts, Ball So Hard exploded for 17 runs against the Ball & Chain Gang.

The game didn't start out this lopsided. BSH scored 2 runs in each of the first two innings. In the 3rd, the wheels fell off for the Gang. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, B&C manager Amelia Harveycutter made the strategic decision to issue the intentional walk to the male kicker in order to get to Marilee Columbus. Columbus would end up making them pay when she laid down a nice bunt up first and drove in 2 runs. Ball So Hard would go on to score 8 runs in the 3rd and open it up.

To Ball & Chain Gang's credit, they kept battling. Harveycutter was very vocal (believe it or not) in providing coaching instructions to her team. Quote: "When you kick the ball, don't look at it! Just fucking run!!" The adjustments paid off. In the 4th inning, B&C strung together a series of base hits and put 4 runs up on the board in a flash!

But in the end, the defense just wasn't strong enough. Ball So Hard continued to ball pretty hard, as Brad Gault did not pull any punches. The final was 17-4.

Observations & Notes
  • I'm not sure if it's in spite of being blown out or because of it, but I gotta say B&C got off the chain at Luckie's afterwards. I don't want to encroach on Fagel's Bar Buzz territory, but I think they'll be in contention for the big plastic belt. They were throwing down!
  • The two teams combined for 21 runs, which makes it one of the most highest scoring games in WAKA VA Peninsula history. The game is tied for 2nd most combined runs with 4 other games. The all-time record is 22.
  • Experience was the key. Although BSH does have their fair share of rookies, nearly all of Ball & Chain were playing kickball for the first time on Wednesday. It'll take some time for them to get the hang of it. But Harveycutter reportedly has already scheduled some practices. It'll be interesting to see how this unit progresses.
  • Mike Bailey stood out behind the plate for Ball So Hard. He made his debut in the summer, and is still pretty green, but he's got all the tools to make an impact in the league.
