KILFs Pull Ahead of Kickin' Atoms, 7-2, to Earn First Win

recap by Eric Schessl, Chaotic KILFs
Well, week one of the Fall 2013 WAKA season has come to a close, and the KILFS started off their rookie team debut with one in the win column. For the first two innings the game was tight.  Landon Barton, the lead off kicker for the KILFS, decided to boot the ball to start the game. He almost got it over the head of the Atoms’ Left Fielder, but there was an NFL-esque jump and tip which allowed the fielder to make the catch. I think he had some go-go-gadget springs, possibly engineered in a lab, in his feet. From there, momentum was hard to build as it often is with rookie teams, as they battled back and forth. The starting pitcher for the Atoms looked like he had pitched kickball somewhere before, and was delivering what looked like robotically enhanced heat from the mound all night pitching all five innings. I swear I saw Tina Mann oiling his shoulder and elbow between innings.  The first baseman for the Atoms had hands the size of baseball mitts, and caught everything thrown at him. It was like the KILFS VS. The Monstars from Space Jam, only these weren’t mutants. They were mechanically enhanced super-humans created and lead by Tina Mann over there at Jefferson Labs. They are going to continue to give teams trouble all season long.

The two runs from the Atoms came on aggressive base running and a few defensive mistakes by the KILFS. Chris Storar, starting catcher for the KILFS, threw the ball at a base runner near third base, missed, and allowed a run to score. Their other run came off of a deep boot into the outfield with one out, allowing a runner on second base to bring it home. Both of those runs came in the second inning and tied the game at two.

On the KILFS side, Brandon Pickering pitched all five innings and was solid.  He would get a game ball if one was given out as he had never pitched before except in practices. He’s progressed into a good pitcher in a short period of time as he started for the absent Chuck Simerick.  Even though their starting charger Eric the Bearded was sidelined with a knee injury, he was still there doing his best to will the team to victory through coaching, while his teammates stepped up and met the challenge. Kippy Holbrooks may have solidified himself as a main utility guy on defense. He has both the speed and the arm to play both catcher and charger as he showed when rotating between those two positions.  Brandon “Boomer” Covington had a couple of nice deep kicks that brought in runs. All in all, every guy brought both speed and power to the table. It wasn’t all about the guys though.  Kayla Via and Justine Sumrell had some well placed bunts that moved base runners into scoring position to keep the KILFS’ hopes of a victory alive.

Once the KILFS got over their slow start, the kicks started going their way and they ran the bases much more aggressively.  That will power and desire to win proved stronger than any mechanically enhanced robot men, as they managed to put up five more runs in the fourth inning, and held the Kickin’ Robots….err….Atoms, scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings to seal the win.

Look for the Kickin’ Atoms to find more ways to robotically enhance their players for next week’s match-up with New Kickheads On The Block as they look for their first win of the season.  The KILFS will turn around and get some kinks worked out before they face Ball and Chain Gang.

KILFS – 7
Kickin' Atoms – 2
