Tutus, Sunglasses & Leis Oh My

Well hello, avid readers, it’s been quite a long time since my last  WAKA fashion blog, 44 weeks to be exact, but when a challenge arises and competition is involved, I am always game.

As you know in kickball the dress attire is ever changing, now including the new CLUBWAKA logo which was updated in 2016.  I personally love the updated logo as it is all encompassing for the various new sports leagues recently created.
In CLUBWAKA, theme weeks are always my favorite, but I especially liked what I saw on the VA Atlantic League fields on Monday, as so many were festive, wearing their jerseys as well at the vital addition of sunglasses, colorful tutus, and the ever provocative leis.  Some of the exceptional teammates that stood out sporting leis were Rio Caras, Amanda Leroy, Mike Sprow, Will Menzies, and Matthew Kersey on Bed Bath and your Mom.  The tutus were also exquisitely sported by Leha Green and Ella Pierce on Pucking Pandas.

So in proper Fashion Blog form, I decided to spread some knowledge to the group in case you didn’t know.

Did you know a Lei actually has symbolic importance?   It can be given as a gesture of friendship, honor or love which is why you may see them periodically at parties, weddings, and other celebratory events.  Also how the lei is made determines the meaning behind its distribution. In history, they were originally worn by the Polynesians and used more often by the Native Hawaiians to signify rank and loyalty.  In fact if you want to get really festive in the future, May 1st signifies Lei Day in honor of this traditional custom.

The tutu, on the other hand, was derived from a skirt making its first appearance at a Paris Opera in 1832.  Various versions of this elegant yet rambunctious clothing item is the classic, consisting of about 10-12 layers of tulle, the pancake tutu, which is supported by a hoop with a few ruffles, the platter tutu, which it at the waistline instead of the hip and finally the American tutu, which is very short and generally sewn on an undergarment of some sort.  So the more important question here is, which tutu will you sport next game?

As far as the traditional jersey goes, for some teams, alas, we did not have any jerseys to support the CLUBWAKA logo this week, but we did brighten the fields with our smiles, as the brand new team Ball Bashers, including newbies, Krista Keefe, Jeremy Hostetter, Darius Smith, Aleia Ashley, and MVP for the day Allison Proffer, gave the well-established Kicks R For Kids a run for their money.   We are coming back for you Aaron Moriarty!

Concluding today’s fashion blog segment, the moral of the story is that you get out there, give it your best and wear anything, including an amazing smile, being completely fabulous while playing the best game ever!  Don’t forget next week’s social challenge as the continued competition is themed around crazy socks, and remember don’t hate the p-lei-er, hate the game!
