Peninsula Bowling - News & Notes Winter Week 6

Wow! Time flies when you're having fun. Can you believe we're already into week 6? That means it's the last week of the regular season. We have a tight race for the playoffs, so let's take a look at a few news or notes as we hit the home stretch.

Big Booty Throws continues to dominate this season. They've been in first place since week 1 and have had the top series in 3/5 weeks. It helps when you have a guy who is damn near a professional level bowler. Ryon Collins has been tearing it up, putting up an impressive 229 average. Brandon Herring's 191.4 average is currently 3rd best. With those two leading a well-rounded attack, they're the odds on favorites to win the Domestic Beer Trophy.

Many eyes are on the race for the 8th and final spot in the DBT. Obviously Not Golfers is currently clinging to a 64 pin lead over Rumspringa Slingas. That may seem like a good amount, but the Slingas have the ability to blow up on any given week. We all know about Guy Sumrell. His 182.8 average is 5th in the league. But now that Rusty Wallace's wife Nicole gave him a brand new ball for Valentines Day, he's starting to find his groove. In his 2nd game ever thrown with the present he rolled a 206, a new personal best. They're going to be tough to hold off.

Of course, it's not a given that one of these two teams will be left out. Gutter Done is 129 pins above Rumspringa. If they have another off-night like they did in week 5, their playoff spot could be in jeopardy. Also, don't count out Mostly Butt Stuff and 8 Balls and 2 Splits. They're long shots, but stranger things have happened.

The playoff race isn't the only thing that is tight in the league.
Why does this all matter? Even if you don't make the top cup, you'll be competing for the Cup Trophy, right? (Real answer to these rhetorical questions: It doesn't matter. Whether you're a top or bottom team, all that matters is that you're having fun). Some people would say that you'd be better positioned to compete for a trophy if you're the top seed in the Cup tourney as opposed to the last seed in the Domestic Beer Tourney. And while statistically speaking, that'd be accurate, but we've seen in the past that anything can happen.

In the spring of 2017, Obviously Not Golfers made the playoffs as the 5th seed out of 6th qualifiers. We were over 1000 pins worse than the top team, Blurred Lanes. But we survived and advanced in the first playoff week before posting the top score in the finals and improbably winning the tournament. It's not out of the question for any of the teams competing for that final spot to make a run. Hopefully, The Non-Golfers has some more Cinderella magic in them!

Sidenote: The 8th place regular season team, Flame Throwers, would have won the top title with their final week score... if they had qualified. They ended up hoisting the Cup instead. All this was just a round about way of saying that everyone's got a chance if they just get in and it's not worth tanking.
