CLUBWAKA MLS - Spring 19 - Week 6

WEEK 6 - THE PLAYOFFS ARE COMING
(WARNING: This blog is long)

It's crunch time and I don't mean Nestle.  Time to buckle down and get the playoff positioning you've been pining for.  For those on the fringe of the upper bracket, do you push to make it with the hopes of a miracle run to the championship or do you play it safe and try to get your hands on the League 2 Trophy?  For those in the upper bracket, do you try to strategically place yourself for what you feel would be the easiest first round match-up or do you go out guns blazing and let the pieces fall where they may?  But these are the decisions captains live for.  And these are the decisions that decide life and death.

OK.. wait... that may have been a little intense.  Let me try again...

And THESE are decisions that decide meaningless adult recreational sporting event wins and losses.  THESE are decisions that decide whether you'll get your team name on Mediocre League Soccer's Cup.  And THESE are the decisions that will decide whether you win one of my old cleats, spray painted gold, and glued to a wooden base!  None of those sounded as good as the first one.  LIFE AND DEATH IT IS!

I wouldn't say Week 6 helped us much in regards to figuring out who is going to slot where come playoff time.  Three of the biggest games regarding playoff positioning were ties.  Ronaldo and Netkicks probably locked in the top 2 slots.  (Spoiler Alert!) Retired Athletes got their first win of the season (Congrats, Hector!).  But to me the biggest story of week 6 was getting the games in.  There were a lot of doubters out there, but Mother Nature gave us a wonderful 4 hour window in the middle of the day with very little rain and even some sun (the cherry red hue on my face proves it) to get the games in.  While Mother Nature may be responsible, I'd also like to think that I contributed by playing Blind Melon on repeat from Monday to Sunday.

HOUSEKEEPING

1.  Playoff Reminders - A reminder that as of last season, the playoffs split into two separate brackets - 1 for the MLS Cup (top bracket) and 1 for the League 2 Cup (bottom bracket).  We did this to try to keep the parity and give everyone in the league something to play for.  While it may not work out EXACTLY as it's supposed to, we found it to be a better option for the schedule as well as decreasing first round blowouts.
2.  Tiebreakers - Note that on the standings, we don't have a formula for head-to-head, so if you look at the standings and there's a tie, be sure to review whether the teams have played before you pull out the Jump to Conclusions Mat. ("You see, you have this mat.  With different conclusions on it that you can jump to" ~Tom Smykowski)

3.  Mother's Day Challenge on Social Media: Two ways you can enter to win a beer bought by yours truly.
A) You can take a photo of you and your mom with the CLUBWAKA photo I printed for you.  Or if you can convince your mom to come to the game, you can take a photo of you and her at the game and post it on the FB page.  If you need me to take said photo, I will be glad to do that.
B) If you're a mom yourself, you can take a photo of you at the fields on Sunday and explain why you chose to play on Mother's Day.

WEEK 6 RESULTS AND STANDINGS

Netkicks and Chill vs. All Stars FC

All Stars attacking power was frustrating for Netkicks, especially with some of their defense MIA.  Anderzon Rojas is serving as the creator for All Stars and you can't stop him.  You can only hope to contain him.   While Netkicks falls from the unbeaten ranks, they can still secure the #2 slot with a win next week.

Final - All Stars FC 4 - 0 Netkicks

Kick in a Box vs. Hangover 86 FC

This was a big one for Kick in a Box to stay up in the top 8.  While they didn't get a result they were hoping for (a win), they did manage to get a point out of it which helped keep them in the running for the 8 slot.  Sterling Hopkins helped secure the tie for Hangover with an absolutely HUGE penalty save on Kayson Bell's PK.

Final - Kick in a Box 1 - 1 Hangover 86 FC

Retired Athletes vs. Defenders of the Bridge

Retired Athletes got their first win of the season on the backs of Lizbeth Gildo's screamer from 25 yards out and 2 goals from Kevin Wortham.  Defenders of the Bridge falls to 1-4-1 on the season, but look forward to making a run for the League 2 trophy.  Despite a bit of inconsistency on the season, they have the talent for it.  These two may meet again.

Final - Retired Athletes 5 - 3 Defenders of the Bridge

Biercelona vs. All Bark No Bite

A tie is not always something one would get excited about, but this game had a whole lot of excitement.  ABNB was up 5 at halftime led by Patrick Downing's 4 goals and Biercelona managed to make a comeback on the shoulders of Edgardo Martinez's hat trick and earn a point at 6-6.  Coming back from 5 goals down?  Bonkers.

Final - Biercelona 6 - 6 All Bark No Bite

Ronaldo McDonaldo vs. Look Ma, No Hands

So many good performances in this game.  Scott George had a fantastic heel goal for Look Ma and Joe Ingraham put in a killer shift in net keeping a bunch of Ronaldo McNuggets out of the goal.  For Ronaldo, standouts were Victoria Zagursky who was dropping dimes like Steve Nash and Frank Council seemed to win every goal kick in the air.

Final - Ronaldo McDonaldo 4 - 1 Look Ma No Hands

Hot and Messi vs. Moat Monsters

Playing Moat is always a tough task.  Playing Moat with numerous injuries and numerous more on gameday makes it damn near impossible.  But Hot and Messi always shows up to play and always works hard as evidenced by Joe Connors's brace.  Sarah Watson and Mike Dorsey led Moat with 2 goals a piece.

Final - Moat Monsters 8 - 2 Hot and Messi

White Joggers vs. PKs and IPAs

White Joggers started extremely hot and have gone a bit cold in the last two weeks.  Meanwhile, PKs and IPAs continues with their up and down season.  They still have a chance to sneak in the top bracket with a win in the final week and a couple of other things working out for them.  Chris Sharrett continues to lead them in goals (3 this week) with Callum Sutherland (2) and Amanda Bologna (1) also contributing to the scoresheet.

Final - PKs and IPAs 6 - 1 White Joggers

Oozlekicks vs. Misfits

Not that the Game of the Day disappointed, but I do have to say I wanted to see a different result.  I wanted a winner.  I was also surprised to see both teams shorthanded (Misfits - no Gary and Davin and Oozlekicks - no Dennis) with this being a huge game in regards to standings.  But... they each got a point in a back and forth affair that landed at 4-4.  Trey Engelbert had a brace for Misfits and Oozlekicks was led by a hat trick from AJ Scholle.  I have a straaaaaaange feeling these two will see each other again in the playoffs and I'll bring my popcorn for the rematch.

Final Oozlekicks 4 - 4 Misfits

One game left for everyone.  Not going to dive too much into standings here because we're going to get into some detailed analysis with some of our MLS Experts below.

TEAM OF THE WEEK - WEEK 6

Edgardo Martinez - A hat trick to bring your team back from a 5-goal deficit.  That's how you make TOTW.

AJ Scholle - Hat trick to keep Oozlekicks close to the top of the table.  Was all over the place for the reds.

Patrick Downing - a week after hitting a screamer for All Bark No Bite, Patrick figured there's only one way to top that -- 4 goals.

Lizbeth Gildo - Played a great overall game for RA, but her 25 yard blast secured her spot here.

Amanda Bologna - Played the whole game for PKs and IPAs and knocked one in the ol' onion bag to secure PKs and IPAs win.

Frank Council - The heart and voice of Ronaldo McDonaldo.  Won SO. MANY. HEADERS.

Joe Ingraham - Made a ton of saves vs. Ronaldo McDonaldo to keep balls out of the net.  Joe is a candidate for team of the week every week, but got to see his beastness first hand Sunday.

THE RACE FOR THE GOLDEN BOOT
Everyone is swimming upstream to catch Tom Weniger.

Good news for the rest of us: Tom didn't score this week.  Bad news for the rest of us: He had a huge lead.  If Davin would show up to more games, he would certainly be challenging Tom at the top but he finds traveling to kickball tournaments more rewarding than my cleat on a stick.  With two more goals this week, I'm at least trying to give Tom a run for his money.  And don't count out Burleson from Moat who could certainly play a role in this race to the finish.  There are two games left in the race.  It's Tom's to lose.  Stay tuned.

NEW PLAYOFF FEATURE:
MLS ANALYSTS CORNER

We're headed into the final week of the season and I was trying to figure out the best way to go through some potential playoff scenarios.  Being that there are a lot of permutations for how things could potentially fall out, it took a lot of thinkin to figure out the best way to do this.  Ultimately, I asked for volunteers from the league to do three things: (1) Make their picks for Week 7 with Scores (2) Provide me whatever analysis they felt like sharing and (3) answering one question about themselves, their team, or their MLS experience.  This probably should have been another blog post or a screaming match a la Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless, but what the hell.. may as well leverage the captive audience who likes to read.  Let me introduce....

Our Analysts:
Bailey Riley - Ronaldo McDonaldo
Jay Coble - Oozlekicks
Brandon Adrian - All Bark, No Bite
Buck Waldrop - Misfits
Calli Sherrill - Look Ma, No Hands
Brad Kirby - The Commish
While each analyst gave me their scores in order to ensure the projected standings calculate out correctly, I didn't include them in the table below mainly due to the length of the blog, my lack of technical knowledge, and the fact that most people are going to call them out if they're wrong -- not if they're wrong about it being 5-4.  So here is how the Week 7 pick'em shook out.

All Bark No Bite vs. Retired Athletes
"I have to go with ABNB because I love the name and I like choosing the underdog" ~ Calli
"Look for ABNB to end the season on a high note.  I'm going out on a limb and saying they're finishing with a win" ~ Jay
"While I think Retired Athletes are much better than their record reflects, a lack of subs has hampered them all season" ~ Buck
"I agree with Buck that RA has underperformed due to lack of attendance, but I think that RA gets enough out there to stop Pat and ABNB from getting their first win of the season" ~Brad
"Expecting a close hard fought game against Retired Athletes, though their lack of subs may be the kicker" ~Brandon
"I wish I knew more about these teams but I would LOVE to see ABNB get one!" ~Bailey

Biercelona vs. Defenders of the Bridge
"Biercelona because they put out a good team last season and tend to always be a contender" ~Calli
"Look for Biercelona to try and make a statement in their last game of the season against an inconsistent DOTB team. I think this will be a close one." ~Jay
"Biercelona is a potential league winning team if they can get all their players there and on the same page.  I see them putting it all on the line and finishing out the regular season on a positive note" ~Buck
"After I tie last week, I think Biercelona will bring everything to bare against the Defenders, but I think the Defenders will hold out" ~Brandon

Hangover 86 FC vs. Oozlekicks
"Hangover has Mickey and Blake who are talented.  Blake somehow always finds the back of the net and Mickey is one of the best females who has great sight of the game." ~Calli
"With a full squad, Oozle should take care of business going into the playoffs, but Hangover has some veterans (first ever Golden Gal) who can make a big difference" ~ Jay
"With the very first Hands of God winner, there is no way to ever count out Oozlekicks.  Hard fought game decided by one goal" ~Buck
"While Hangover has the firepower to hang with Oozlekicks as evidenced by them beating Ronaldo last season and losing on a last second hail mary this season, I think Oozlekicks outlasts them with Dennis being the difference" ~Brad
"Jay is a beast" ~Bailey
"Oozle has the strongest keeper in the league.  They'll clamp down on defense" ~Brandon

Kick in a Box vs. Misfits
"This could be a close one but Davin seems to be tearing it up for Misfits and putting a lot of points on the board for them." ~Calli
"Misfits, with a full roster, can beat anyone in the league.  Kick in a Box has the potential for an upset (see game against Look Ma).  I see this being feisty and competitive with Misfits looking to solidify a better seed in the top-8 tourney." ~Jay
"As long as Misfits has the offensive studs show to the game and possibly the best female keeper, they will pull out a much needed win to move up the standings" ~Buck
"Kick in a Box has plenty of talent, but Misfits have been constantly evolving game after game.  The Misfits momentum won't be good for KiaB" ~Brandon
"While I'd like to say Kick in a Box has a solid chance, I think the size of their roster hinders them here." ~Brad

White Joggers vs. All Stars FC
"Went with a shot in the dark because I know nothing about either team.  White Joggers 4 - 2 All Stars" ~Buck
"Look for White Joggers to continue their recent slump against a back-loaded schedule.  Seems like All Stars have the firepower to be competitive with any team with a full roster." ~Jay
"Wholeheartedly agree with Jay on this one although absences have certainly dogpiled with the backloaded schedule to contribute to WJ's losing streak.  That being said, All Stars has some serious firepower between Anderzon Rojas and Matt Kennedy." ~Brad
"All Stars have been killin it this season as a new team" ~Calli

PKs and IPAs vs. Netkicks and Chill
"With Netkicks falling out of the unbeaten ranks last week, it'll be interesting to see how they respond vs. PKs and IPAs.  PKs has been so up and down, it's very hard to get a feel for which team will come out on Sunday" ~Brad
"I'll call this a win for PKs by a thin margin" ~Brandon
"Although PKs and IPAs is getting stronger as the season moves forward, Netkicks is one of the top teams in the league.  Coasting with some solid momentum while resting players may happen in this match" ~Buck
"Look for Netkicks to coast into a top 2 seed with another strong defensive showing." ~Jay
"I went with Netkicks and Chill because they beat us and we're a tough team" ~Calli

Hot and Messi vs. Ronaldo McDonaldo
"I had to go with RM.  They're girls are skilled and can hold their own and Brad, Frank and Silver are skilled guys as are the rest of their team" ~Calli
"Look for Ronaldo to take care of business in the classiest way to end the regular season and start the true defense of their title"
"As one of the most loyal and hard working teams out there, Hot and Messi don't have the umph to take down the best statistical team in the league" ~Buck
"H&M has a decent shot, but Ronaldo just doesn't look like they're going down in this one" ~Brandon
"Totally dependent on who shows up for H&M.  If Che, Marvin, and Carlos show up -- Ronaldo McDonaldo may need some Tums." ~Brad

Look Ma, No Hands vs. Moat Monsters
"I think I used to play volleyball with the keeper on LMNH.  Good volleyball chops somehow translates into solid reflexes and blocking.  Who knew?  I'll put faith in an old teammate and underdog it" ~Brandon
"Definitely the game of the week.  The thing I love about both of these teams is how much they utilize their chicks.  I really think its going to be a tough battle but if Moat has a full squad, I think they'll come out on top" ~Bailey
"This is going to be the tightest game of the weekend.  With a keeper that could be in the running for 'Hands of God' playing for LMNH, he will keep this team in the game.  The offensive fortitude of Moat Monsters along with a strong team at full tilt, I see Moat pulling out a win on Sunday" ~Buck
"Game of the Week for sure pending attendance from Moat Monsters.  Significant playoff ramifications for both teams.  If Moat are full strength, I see them winning a close one.  If not, Look Ma will look to capitalize and strengthen their case for a higher seed in the MLS playoffs" ~Jay

Now that we've covered who they've picked, let's move on to Final Standings and potential playoff seedings based upon each of their picks.

FINAL STANDINGS, PLAYOFF PROJECTIONS, AND Q&A WITH THE ANALYSTS

Q: "We all know you as the bulldog of Ronaldo McDonaldo, but over the last three seasons, what do you feel you've improved on the most and how has the team (or an individual) helped you with that?"

A: "So I think the thing I've improved on the most is controlling my aggression and being more patient on defense instead of just trying to tackle people.  Honestly, the team has helped SO MUCH, specifically Frank, Steve and Brad communicating with me.  On and off the field.. going over plays with me.. and yelling at me to be patient when I'm playing.  I feel like Brad and Frank just know when I feel the fire raging through me and you're able to calm me down quick and remind me to keep my feet."

JAY COBLE

If Jay's picks work out the way he projected, we'd see:
MLS Cup Bracket
(1) Ronaldo McDonaldo vs. (8) Kick in a Box
(2) Netkicks vs. (7) Look Ma (rematch!)

Q: "Oozlekicks has always been a solid team, but what do you think is the one contributing factor to your jump up the table this season?"

A: "A forgiving schedule and some big moves in the winter transfer window."

BRANDON ADRIAN

If Brandon's picks work out the way he projected, we'd see:
MLS Cup Bracket
(1) Ronaldo McDonaldo vs. (8) Moat Monsters
(2) Oozlekicks vs. (7) White Joggers
(3) Netkicks and Chill vs. (6) Look Ma
(4) All Stars vs. (5) Misfits

Q: "All Bark No Bite has had their share of struggles this season.  In the last two weeks, you seem to have started putting it togetehr.  What do you think is the biggest difference over the last two weeks?

A: "Honestly I think it's been mostly attendance and the new starting to gel with the old.  We have some solid shooters in Gabe and Patrick so just getting into a swing and letting it set has paid off"

CALLI SHERRILL

(12) PKs and IPAs vs. (13) Retired Athletes
* White Joggers over Hangover based on GF.  Biercelona behind Hangover based on H2H
* DOTB > ABNB due to H2H

Q: "What do you think is the biggest strength on Look Ma No Hands?"

A: "The biggest strength for us as a team is when our passing game is on point.  When we can get our 1-2 passing and movement down, we tend to find the back of the net more easily and with less exertion if that makes sense"

BUCK WALDROP

If Buck's picks work out the way he projected, we'd see:
MLS Cup Bracket

* DOTB > ABNB due to H2H

Q: "Misfits is definitely a top 4 team when it comes to talent and has taken a huge jump up the table after winning the League 2 Cup last season.  That being said, I'm interested in what you feel has been your biggest challenge this season"

A: "Yes, we definitely have taken a big jump up and are playing up to our raw potential.  With Trey, Gary, and Davin on the team, we can outscore anyone.  The lack of females showing up every Sunday has been tough for the team as well, not to mention the two captains have been injured all season."

BRAD KIRBY

If Brad's picks work out the way he projected, we'd see:
MLS Cup Bracket
(1) Ronaldo McDonaldo vs. (8) Kick in a Box
(2) Netkicks vs. (7) Look Ma (rematch!)
(3) Oozlekicks vs. (6) Misfits (rematch!)
(4) All Stars vs. (5) Moat Monsters
* Oozlekicks > All Stars based on GA
* 5 way tie broken by GA

(10) Biercelona vs. (15) Hot and Messi
(11) Retired Athletes vs. (14) Defenders of the Bridge
(12) PKs and IPAs vs. (13) Hangover 86 FC

Q: "What team has changed the most since last Fall?"

A: "I'd say Misfits because their two offensive recruits to pair with Davin have been vital to their move up the table."

Q: "Favorite Picture of the three seasons"

A: Not that winning a championship in an adult recreational league should be that big of a deal, but I was overjoyed last season knowing that Ronaldo McDonaldo will live on the trophy forever.  I also really loved the excitement Adam and Misfits had when they made a run to win the League Two Playoffs. There are a ton of action shots I like from both Ryan and I and try to cover those in the blog each week, but these two really summarize how happy this league can makes people (me and Adam).

Q: "Which team has been the most surprising to you? "

A: "I'd probably say Hot and Messi and that's mainly due to injuries and absences.  The roster that Hot and Messi has would be top 8 for sure, but with injuries and absences, their 19 person roster often only had 7 or 8 showing up.  Was really looking forward to seeing how much noise they could make this Spring.  Would also say White Joggers surprised me a lot, but then they surprised me a lot last season as Ibra Kadibra.  Lots of hustle, talent, and they have gelled quickly over the last couple seasons"

Q: "Which team has you most concerned to face in the upcoming tournament and why?"

A: "I don't want to punt on this question, but I think I'm going to have to punt on this question.  Mainly because while we're currently undefeated, I think everyone projected in the top 8 would be able to give us a run for our money - Oozlekicks - Dennis, Tom and Jay scare me.  Moat Monsters - know how to play the game whether they have their whole roster show up or just 7 of them.  Netkicks - besides us, best GAA in the league.  All Stars - so much offensive firepower.  Look Ma - solid aggressive defense and have the females to turn the tide.  Misfits - another offensive powerhouse that could take us down.  Kick in a Box and White Joggers both have the talent to make a run too"

Q: "Which team has been your toughest competition?  What's your prediction for the finals?"

A: "I think my team would say Misfits as the first half of that game we were under fire and Silver came to the rescue.  For games where I've been present, I'd say Look Ma or All Stars.  In regards to a prediction, I'll take ourselves out of it b/c I'd feel like too much of a homer.  Also have to use my own bracket from above, so I'd say Moat over Oozlekicks - 3-2."

Q: "Who's your favorite person to play with?"

A: "Anyone but Bailey."

WEEK 7 - Mother's Day at Oozlefinch
A German food truck and a dessert food truck will be out at Oozlefinch on Sunday for Mother's Day.

Beer + German Food + Cupcakes + Soccer + Moms = a Sunday you'll want to remember.

GAME OF THE WEEK - WEEK 7

Look Ma, No Hands vs. Moat Monsters

I believe they've played each other every season.  They know each other.  And playoff position is on the line.  This 3 PM game next week is a must-see.  DO NOT MISS IT UNLESS OF COURSE YOU HAVE PLANS WITH MOM.  THEN I DEFINITELY SUGGEST YOU  MISS IT.
