Deadline Passes; 15 Teams to Compete for Wentworth Trophy

HAMPTON, VA - The deadline for VA Peninsula team registration passed Wednesday night at midnight, and a total of 258 players have signed up for one of the most highly anticipated seasons of WAKA kickball ever. A total of 15 teams will compete for the prestigious Wentworth Trophy this spring.

Reunited and it feels so good.
Among the newsworthy signings yesterday, was the announcement that SP Corey Carlyle has decided to return to WAKA with the 5 O'Clockers. Carlyle was one of the most talented pitchers in the league for three seasons, earning All-Peninsula honors on multiple occasions, and leading the Clockers to a league championship in the Fall of 2009. His return after taking a season off will be a welcome one for the fans of the 5OC.

Vicious & Delicious and Just For Kicks completed the first trade in league history on Wednesday. VD traded OF Sarah Rourke to JFK in exchange for future considerations. Rourke had previously played with JFK last season before signing on with the expansion VD. But when head coach Bryan Freed needed help bolstering his female lineup, she agreed to the move back to her former club. After the trade, VD called up rookie Jesika Johnson from the minors to fill the vacant roster spot.

Khalid celebrating with the Wentworth Trophy.
Former Foul Ball OF Khalid Nelson is making his triumphant return to WAKA kickball this season, joining forces with New Kickheads on the Block. Nelson is a very positive and good natured guy, and his personality will definitely fit in well with the new look NKotB. Plus he brings championship experience (Nelson was a member of the Spring 2009 Foul Balls championship team) to a group that could definitely benefit from some veteran wisdom. It'll definitely be good to see Khalid back on the fields this season!

In other news, the commissioner's office has annoucned that the Spring 2011 schedule will be released to the public tonight. Stay tuned for the announcement. I can't wait to see all of the exciting matchups... Commissioner Brent Wentworth (3rd person alert!) has also annoucned that a mega pre-season preview and a power poll will both be posted to the blog this weekend.
