Quick Note: With 16 teams in the league, it's become harder and harder to recap the games. Given that I don't see them. I definitely encourage you all to send me your quotes, stories, and recaps so I can include them in the blog. Even if it's just a few short sentences, it helps. brent@kickball.com or on Facebook.
So without further ado; enjoy.
Lick It Before You Kick It 4, 5 O'Clockers 3

Burning Bridges 8, Kick Ass 1
Kick Ass came into the season with a lot of hype (mostly from captain Manny Anderson, but still), and were looking to start their franchise history off with a bang. Burning Bridges had other ideas though. Bridges have had a lot of success in another, less talented, league, but had not had a lot of preseason buzz coming into this Fall. They definitely look to change that as they made a statement against Kick Ass, dropping runs early and often while cruising to victory. In the postgame press conference, Anderson, (who couldn't be there due to unforseen circumstances; He had to run into a burning building and save a family as their home was burning down, super hero style), said, "That's a foot in my mouth. Please. I'm still talking my ish. No worries. We'll be back to 'K' some 'A'."
Free Ballin' 8, Jiminy Kicks It 2
All of the offseason practice that Free Ballin' put in, paid off. They looked very impressive in their week 1 victory over JKI.
| After the game, JKI enjoyed some drinks with WAKA CEO Ray Smith at Luckie's! |
Whenever two Bank of America associates take the mound against each other, you know runs are going to be hard to come by. Last year in the VIP vs. Rumspringa game, Brent Wentworth (3rd person alert!) and Matt Wellbrock faced off against one another in a pitchers duel that ended in a 0-0 tie. This year, with Wentworth on a new team, Shake N Bake, the results were the same. BoA associates accounted for 8 out of the 10 innings thrown (SnB's Jeffrey Scott added 2 scoreless as well).
The game didn't look like it was going to be a shut out, as both sides had their opportunities. Shake N Bake kicked off the first with leadoff man Tim Lobdell and #2 kicker AJ Derr both getting on base. However, the offense stalled out and the 'Springa defense escaped with no runs allowed. Rumspringa had their opportunities also. Specifically in the 3rd inning, when the bases were loaded. SnB's Ch Bryan Turcotte made a tremendous game saving play when he gunned out a runner at home for the force out, which allowed the game to remain tied.
In the bottom of the 5th, SnB's Justin Blair lead off with a beautiful bunt single to start it off. But the Shake N Bake offense could not capitalize. With a combination of great pitching and defensive awareness, the next 3 kickers popped out to end the game and secure the tie.
One last game note: Prior to the game, Rumspringa's Troy Southall predicted that he'd 'Go yard on Brent tonight.' His prediction would not come true however. Wentworth struck Southall out looking in the first inning. (Troy, you know I had to include that one in there).
Jagernauts 5, Chubby Gangsters 0
The Chubby Gangsters are still working on some of their defensive and offensive alignments headed into this season. Meanwhile, the Jagernauts picked up right where they left off with Dan Moore, Joe Mazzitti, Kevin Gitkos, and Alden Lawrence providing the offense. For a more detailed recap, please be sure to check out Justin Littell's great write up.
Battlestar Ballsacktica 4, Chicken Tetrazzini 1
Battlestar Ballsacktica 3, Chubby Gangsters 1
The Ballsacks were flying high after their sweep of two quality teams in the Peninsula. The defense was on point, only allowing 1 run in each game. The offense was carried in week 1 by BB's Alison Easterday who reached base on a walk on Wednesday (that's pretty much the only detail I got from BB about the games!)
New Kickheads 10, Foul Balls 0The game was closer than the score would indicate, as the NKotB held only a 4-0 lead headed into the 5th. But the wheels then fell of for the Foulies, giving up 6 runs in the final frame. For more details, head over to Nathaniel Johnson's brilliant "A Man With His (Foul) Balls" recap (personally, my favorite recap to read every week).
Just For Kicks 3, Vicious & Delicious 0The main event for the evening featured a rematch of the Spring 2011 League Championship Final. Flashback to that game, and VD defeated JFK in a very closely contested game, 2-1. Now, only 4 weeks later, the two teams took the field again. This time, JFK was out for redemption.
The first inning was a wash as both defenses came out on fire. But the JFK offense would not be denied. In the 3rd inning, with Nikki LeBlanc on 2nd base, Wes McClain cranked blasted a hard line drive into center field. VD CF Chris "Bundy" LeBlanc broke hard for the ball, but couldn't quite get their in time as the ball fell safely in front of his diving attempt. LeBlanc was running hard from the contact and came around to score the game's first run. The fired up Just For Kicks squad would go on to tack on a couple more insurance runs in the 4th inning to make the score 3-0.
Defensively, the 3 headed monster of JC Cashwell, Daniel Shaw, and newcomer Will Monroe kept the veteran VD kickers off balance and uncomfortable at the plate. More than one bunter had the ball misplayed off their foot to result in a pop up. Seriously, the Philadephia Phillies look at that pitching trio and say, "Damn".
