WOMAN OF THE WEEK - SPECIAL EDITION

So, in writing this article, I ran into a brick wall of sorts. I feel like this article was a good idea, and started out strong... but with multiple rain weeks, no games, and the fact that I just don't know as many people as I thought I did, I've had to revamp some things. So for the conclusion of the season I'm going to do things a little differently...

CAPTAIN'S CHOICE
Jagernauts - Captain Justin Littell

MVP of the women I would nominate is KATIE LITLE. Katie is first of all a very good kickball player, but more importantly she is encouraging to her teammates, forgiving when someone makes an error and very helpful with coaching and teaching our players the game and strategy.
I have had the pleasure of playing both with and against Katie for a couple of seasons. She's has an excellent attitude, and infectious energy. She's received recognition from the end of season's All-Peninsula teams in past seasons, and for good reason. Katie's not only a threat in the field, but it's very rare for her to not get on base. Anytime a team can add female talent with both offensive and defensive strengths it's a good outcome! Any team would be lucky to have Katie on their roster!

Justin's pick of a Most Valuable Woman, from a different team: TRACY COLBY, Shake n Bake. "She has seemed to put together a solid team in her first year as captain."
Agreed. Tracy also captained one of the all-girl teams last year for the Halloween games. She's a natural in the leadership position. She has experience with both soccer and softball which is a double bonus for the kickball world, because she has a solid foot, speed, and base-running knowledge. Seriously, how many girls kick homeruns?? Tracy makes it look easy. Her easy going personality, mixed with her knowledge and love of the sport makes her a great teammate and captain.

I have also had the chance to play with Tracy in some tournament teams. One of which was a charity tournament in Virginia Beach (which we won!!) It was my first experience playing with her, and thankfully not my last. Tracy is an asset to every team she plays on, and no matter what team she's on, you can believe they're going to put up a good fight!

Battlestar Ballsacktica
Captain Andy Tapley

Captain Tapley's pick for his Most Valuable Woman: Karen Stear Savell. Why? Because she makes it to every game, has made some outstanding plays on offense AND defense and does an Awesome job with our game write ups!

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Karen yet. But I will say anyone who is dedicated enough to do a write-up every week deserves mad props son! I originially thought it would be easy and boy was I wrong! Karen writes about her team EVERY week, so that we can all re-live the game through her eyes, as if we were there!! On top of that she's good on offense AND defense?? Why haven't I met this girl yet?!?!

Andy's pick for a Most Valuable Woman from another team: LORI MEDFORD, Lick it Before You Kick it.

"Because she is SOOO cute!!"

Admittedly, this is one of my favorite reasons for someone picking a favorite woman from another team! And really, do you need more of a reason than that??

Vicious and Delicious- Captain Chris "Bundy" LeBlanc

When asked to pick a woman from his own team Bundy chose 2.. is anyone surprised?? First pick is BETSY DIXON.
Betsy is a co-captain of this team, and probably the only one of the captains who isn't afraid to lay the smack down on any of us. She knows what has to be done in order to win- and the goal is always to win. Betsy puts the good of the team in front of her own wants.. and has volunteered to sit innings out to let other girls play in every game she's been in. It's refreshing to see a no-nonsense woman taking charge and telling the men how it's going to be. Betsy has quite a few seasons of kickball under her belt. Last night she proved her skill in laying down a BEAUTIFUL bunt and running it out all the way- she was safe! She's always come out to support her team, even on seasons when she wasn't able to play, because she was busy having a beautiful baby girl (Sloane).

Next on VD's MVW list is: Kate Barcus.
Kate has incredible talent on the field, and at the bar. Her defensive skills are matched by few. She sacrifices her body for the play, every time. This is her first season back since having surgery on her ankle, and if it weren't for that super-awesome brace she gets to wear, no one would ever know. Kate plays 3rd base- and she plays it well. She holds her ground on the bag, and knows when to step off for the tag-play. She's not afraid of the ball, and better still she's not afraid to call it when it's hers (and sometimes when it's not). Her communication to her charger is also stellar. She's got a better angle for seeing bunts heading into foul territory and let's them know when it's time to "Let it Ride!!!" She's an excellent player and I know when the ball's headed toward Kate, she's got it.

Bundy's pick for MVW on another team: Jiselle Anderson, Shake n Bake.

Undoubtedly one of the fastest girls on the Peninsula. Last season when she played with Moose Knuckles she kicked in the top of the order, something not many girls get a chance to do. But Jiselle did it, and no one had to question why she was there - she's good. She has skill not only in getting on base, but getting around the bases, which is no small feat. Scoring runs, and taking names- that's what this girl does! She recently ran a 50/50 raffle during her bar time to help raise money for adults with traumatic brain injuries. So not only is she a good athlete, she's good hearted!

Stay tuned in the following weeks to see the other Captain's picks for their MVWs of their own team, and of other teams!
