WEEK 2 RECAP
CLUBWAKA
Mediocre League Soccer Week 2 had some excitement, a lot of goals scored, and our first slap on the wrist of the season. Also had a great turnout at the brewery. Was great going over there after the three o'clock games and seeing 20 or 30 people waiting in line, getting food, or drinking a couple beers.
Like last week, we'll start with some basic league housekeeping items.
- Remember this from last week? Thanks for adulting! Thank you for cleaning up after
yourselves. Despite having no trashcans at the field, there was very
little trash left. I cannot thank you all enough. It may be a good
idea to assign someone to bring a trashbag each week and take your trash
(especially any alcohol) with you. Unfortunately, we had an incident of not picking up trash and could end up in jeopardizing the league, so as it was communicated mid-week, PLEASE bring trashbags and limit any kind of drink consumption at the field. I know everyone is having a great time, so imagine this won't be an issue going forward. Thanks!
- Sliding: I had multiple concerns around slidetackling that were brought to my attention post-game. To clarify, the rule is no sliding. From a goalkeeper standpoint, if you're sliding to make a save, no problem. If you come sliding in two-footed to a player in possession of the ball, you will be called for a foul. Sliding on the field with no one around isn't going to get you a call, but if someone is in the proximity, you're going to get called. If it looks egregious or it endangers the player, you may get a card but this is at the referee's discretion. We will provide them guidance on the rules, but we are not going to try to do their jobs. They are licensed refs for a reason and they are acclimating to our rulebook, so cut them some slack and if you have concerns post-game, let me know. Appreciate you all bringing any concerns to my attention.
- I also wanted to reiterate this from last week: Scores and Scorers: While the refs are keeping track of
scores and scorers, it's a tough gig trying to get people's names right,
so please have someone (or multiple someones) on your team keep track
of goals and scorers and submit post-game in a score thread on the
Facebook page or Captain's page. Here's a great example of a box score from Meaghan Dorsey of the Moat Monsters. This will save a lot of back and forth post-game if the league can get in a habit of submitting. Thanks for your efforts!
WEEK 2 RESULTS
UTTOTPHJ vs. Look Ma - Devon Webb, Chad Martin, and new signing Lopez Herick led the way with 8 of the 9 goals for Look Ma. UTTOTPHJ apparently had a lot of folks traveling, but a couple of goals by Jonathan Taylor and a slew of amazing saves by Buck Waldrop led the way for them.
Hot and Messi vs. Netkicks and Chill - Marvin Arboine took over for Hot and Messi with a hat trick, but didn't have enough to net kicks to beat Netkicks. The navy squad spread their goals around with Kuligowski, Huffman, Futrell, and Ojelade all leading them to victory.
OTPHJ vs. Oozlekicks - OTPHJ started strong with a couple of quick goals and Oozlekicks fought back with 4 goals from Adam Smith. In the end, OTPHJ knocked the ball around to put a nail in the coffin with a few minutes left in the game. Wish I had this one on my DVR.
Moat Monsters vs. Hot and Messi - Getting the Moat Monsters on the back end of a double header is pretty brutal (sorry Hot and Messi). Marvin Arboine continued his best Messi impression by getting a 4th goal on the day, but Hot and Messi eventually drowned in the moat. Kim Merritt, captain of Hot and Messi said after the game, "My daughter is probably older than most of the Moat Monsters. Getting old is a bitch'.
Moat Monsters vs. Hangover 86 FC - Didn't get much about this game other than Maria Mossman saved Hangover's rep by scoring one for the carolina blues. Moat Monsters continued their dominant performances with goals spread throughout the lineup (6 different goals scorers).
TEAM OF THE WEEK
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WEEK TWO - TEAM OF THE WEEK!
Gary Johnson - 2 fantastic goals in the OTPHJ/Oozlekicks game, the second of which was an ant-burner to the far post.
Victoria Zagursky -- 2 unbelievably composed goals and almost a third on a header far post late in the game. 3 goals through 2 weeks for the former Poquoson Islander.
Marvin Arboine -"I feel as though I channel Messi at points during the game, but only when I get hot."
Jessica Huntington - leading the league with 6 goals in 3 games, Jessica had 4 on Sunday. A master poacher, who is an early favorite for Golden Gal.
Adam Smith - I don't think Adam was there week 1. 4 goals isn't too shabby for his Oozlekicks debut.
Devon Webb - Devon is dominant all over the field whether he's playing defense or he's pushing up to score a hat trick.
Buck Waldrop - I think 90% of the photos I took on Sunday were Buck Waldrop making saves. Doing his best Buffon impression.
THE RACE FOR THE GOLDEN BOOT
Here are the results after Week 2. Jessica Huntington and Mike Machie are at the top of the leaderboard with Chad Martin on their heels.
PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Jonathan Taylor of UTTOTPHJ takes on Jamie Gallagher of Look Ma, No Hands in the 1 PM game. Look Ma won 9-2.

CLUBWAKA MLS HOODLUMS OF THE WEEK
Netkicks and Chill are the Hoodlums of the Week for going early to the bar and mingling with Aiman and Adam from UTTOTPHJ. I'm still working out a way to recognize them, but in the meantime, CONGRATULATIONS on the blog will do!!
WEEK 3 PREVIEW
Game of the Week
Moat Monsters vs. OTPHJ at 1 PM -- A battle of the undefeateds and two of the most talented teams in the league. I know I'll be there. Hope to see some of you out there early to see whether OTPHJ gets tossed in the moat or gets rewarded with an OTPHJ.
