WAKA Bar Buzz: Cancer gets set on fire.

What a great week for WAKA Peninsula!  I've said many times that longevity at the bar is only one aspect of evaluating teams for the amount of buzz generated on any given week, but since it is the area that I excel in, I can't help but to be excited to see the number of people in both the AMP and the kick out photo.

I want to highlight a couple of people from the kick out photo that mean a lot to me.  First thanks to Jimmy Rogers for sticking it out with me so I wouldn't be the only Death Toe standing.  Jimmy isn't a regular late nighter but another group of great guys is.  The core of the Smoking Bunts social team, Casey Heck, Shane Chambers and Tim Nellis.  I didn't actually see Tim in the photo as I was doing my research, but I'm sure he was there.  They are roommates and carpool buddies so you always see them together, but individually they each have contributed volumes to my personal kickball story.  I know there are many of you out there that can say the same.  You never see any of them without a smile, a word of encouragement and a willingness to bring the party wherever they go.

Like Schrodinger's kickball, everything in this league isn't about partying, yet everything in this league is a party.  Our WAKA Kicks Cancer team made great strides on Saturday with many people attending Jillian Simms' yoga fund raiser.  Then responding to a last minute call our tireless leader Brent along with Erin Small, Kat Annese, Chris LeBlanc (Bundy), and Georgios Kiriaz...I don't know how to say it...George gathered at the Funkfest at WMS and sold beer at the event and gave their tips to the league charity fund as well.  Almost a thousand dollars was raised and I have no doubt that everyone had a good time doing it.
If you have been following along with the social posts this week, you might have noticed that the Alcobalics have made a no holds barred announcement that they are coming after the belt again.  Both the Alcobalics and the Fireballs have been taking us along with them as they have taken the WAKA party on the road to all points peninsula and maybe a little beyond.  Are we prepared for the party they plan to bring this week?  Can anyone top them?  They seem to be able to take command of the party once they set their sites on the belt.  We shall see what happens this week.

The only team so far that has really challenged the Alcobalics are our reigning belt holders the Fireballs.  I wonder if there will be a dance off.  If there is then you can bet that Rumspringa will be forced to show these newbies how it is done!  You will often times see a team choose a week that everyone takes off work on Thursday and they go all out to get the belt.  I really hope that happens this week and these two social stand outs get a run for their money.  Last week, before I released my write up, many Fireball players were messaging me asking what they had to do to get the belt and letting me know that they planned to give it their all to get it.  I couldn't tell them that they already had it.  Even early on at Tapps many of them were gearing up to party down and still didn't realize that they already had the belt.  Fortunately for us, specifically me, they chose to not be satisfied and continued with their plan to go hard last week.  They had a huge number of the team out to close the bar down.

They dominated the flip cup table, they danced to whatever rhythm was going on in their heads.  Dangerous pyramids were created.  Both the AMP and the kick out photo were orange blurs of crazy people.  Yet again, when the party refused to stop the belt made it onto the stage at the Katt and continued to travel the rest of the week.

I'm too lazy to double check, but I'm pretty sure that this will be the first time that we have back to back back to back belt winners.  Fireballs, keep the belt polished and sanitized, or not, since you get to keep it for yourselves one more week.  Since it didn't work out so well on the Alcobalics second week, I re-challenge everyone to get a picture with the belt and as many Fireballs as you can this week.

Ooooh, do you feel the chill in the air? Fall is officially here, which means it's just about hoodie season. It also means that the Fall WAKA VA Peninsula season is in full swing. We're starting to see teams gel and some great kickball being played. Time to take a look at week 4 in review.

(Reminder: I won't necessarily talk about every team or even every game. With 9 games a night, I obviously can't see or hear about every cool thing that happened on a WAKA Wednesday. If I miss something, please feel free to post in the Facebook comments.)

News, Notes, & Observations

  • The buzz at Tapps was all about the Fireballs, but not for their usual post-game antics, but for what they accomplished on the field. In one of the biggest upsets in league history, the Fireballs defeated Spring 2015 finalists Smokin' Bunts with a walk off kick. It was a wild, back and forth affair. Smokin' Bunts looked like they were going to survive, as they were only one out from the victory. Sarah Brooks kept the 2 out rally alive with a kick to left field that fell in to load the bases. John Vrooman then punished his former team with a game winning line drive. Afterwards, the Bar Buzz champs partied pretty hard at Tapps! Great win.

  • Although, Cardiac Arrest won the game, the highlight of the night came from Rumspringa catcher Troy Southall. With 1 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the CA kicker went up one. Troy tagged the kicker and then wheeled around and did a no look, diving hook shot that pegged Rob Allen in the chest as he was diving towards home. I've never seen anything like it.
  • Huge win for Rumspringa, blanking KA, 1-0. When that defense is on their game, they're one of the elite unit's in kickball.
  • Kick Ass did bounce back in the 2nd half of their double header and earned a 2-1 win over the injury riddled DCOMB squad. This was the first loss for DCOMB and leaves Cardiac Arrest as the only undefeated squad this Fall.
  • Cardiac defeated the KILFs, 7-0 on Wednesday. This was the first time I've gotten a chance to see the KILFs in action this fall. Their new charger, CJ Smith stood out. He made his fair share of mistakes in our game, but you could see flashes of outstanding play as well. I think he'll continue to get better with more reps and could turn into one of the better chargers in the league. Until then though, the KILFs are going to have to ride the roller coaster of ups and down.
  • The "kick pass" from the catcher position is always a high risk move. Not many players possess the accuracy and coordination to keep this play in their arsenal. The KILFs Scott Tinsley does though. He made two successful kick pass outs in their win over the Alcobalics.
  • While I love seeing all the photos of teams with the bar buzz belt or going out together on the weekends, I really love seeing pics of WAKA Kickballers giving back to their community. Cardiac's Jill Simms and Tribal Yoga hosted an open class with donations going towards our Relay For Life team, WAKA Kicks Cancer. In addition to being a hell of a workout, we earned over $600 for the American Cancer Society! The Situation's Lasalle Blanks was there recording some footage, so look for the story on 13 News this week.
  • In addition to the yoga class, a small but might group of kickballers volunteered to serve beers at a War Memorial Stadium concert on Saturday night. All of the tips will go to the Relay team as well. In addition to raising money for the charity, we also helped the War Memorial staff out of a big bind by volunteering. It's always good to help keep our relationship strong and give back to the organization that provides us with the best fields in Hampton Roads to play on. Thank you, Erin Small, Kat Greene, George Kiriazidis, and Chris "Bundy" LeBlanc for your selfless service. You did a great thing for the charity and for the league yesterday. When you see these guys on Wednesday, buy them a beer!
  • The trading card fundraiser had a successful opening night. Thank you to everyone who purchased cards. I will have them at the fields and Tapps again on Wednesday night, so bring some cash, a sharpie for autographs, and buy a few packs... On Thursday, Andreas Beyersdorf wondered which player card had the best smile
  • Tough call.
  • On paper, Five Toe Death Kick seems to have the better team when compared to Hot Dogs & Tacos. But games aren't played on paper. Whenever these two teams play, the Tacos just have their number. HDT peppered the 5TDK defense with well placed kicks and cruised to a 5-0 W.

Happy and Hoodied

Baby it’s cold outside…well almost.  This week’s WAKA Wednesday Fashion Blog is about a clothing item many of us take for granted.  We throw it on when we need it most and toss it when we are through, but yet it is still always there for us.   We are talking about one of the most universally unisex pieces of clothing that exists, and probably carries the most memories for you throughout the years, as you may have bought your favorite one at a concert, sports event, or maybe even the last time you went grocery shopping.  The one, the only… the sweatshirt, which is also sometimes referred to as a hoodie!

Although this superb garment can be dated back to the Medieval Europe, where monks rocked out their hoodies to show their devout religious reverence through their distinguished attire, the actual first hooded sweatshirt was produced by Champion in the 1930s, and primarily marketed to those workers in upstate New York who had to endure freezing temperatures.

Later the hoodie itself created an impact on the fashion culture in the 1970s through the development of the Hip-Hop culture and was most emblematic and easily recognized in the film Rocky.

The rise of the hoodies continued to grow throughout the 1990s as it not only became relevant as an academic symbol, but also thrived as a trend through the Western US, and is a huge staple in pretty much every American’s wardrobe today.

This clothing item is A+++ in my grade book for fashion expertise.  Not only do you get the comfort of throwing it on, and going out the door without a care, but you also get to show your spirit on your sleeve, whatever way that may be.  Sometimes, it may even come naturally.

Other times we use sweatshirts as a form of showing your affection for someone, especially on dates.

So as we embrace this wonderful Fall weather, think about what your next sweatshirt will be.  Here are some ideas if you don’t have a favorite team, beloved band, or just need sweatshirt inspiration.

Most of all when you wear your favorite piece of fall attire, make sure you are having fun, and are with friends doing your favorite thing.  Fall in love with Fall, and don’t forget your favorite sweatshirt.

Bar Buzz Week of 9/16/15

Like money or the flag, the Bar Buzz Belt is just a symbol of something greater than itself.  It has little value on its own but represents work, achievement and status.  People put in great amount of effort to achieve and retain it.  Once they have the belt, they flaunt it, they revel in the glory of obtaining it.  They hold it up high for everyone to notice and...well...hmmm.  Where is the belt?!  Ah, some jealous team has stolen it.    No.      It was in some horrific accident.     No.     I guess it just wasn't important enough to bring to Tapps this week. The Alcobalics had the pleasure of turning over the belt to themselves this week, so they dispensed with the formalities and took their cue from Foul Balls and stuffed it in a closet until they felt it was really needed.  To be fair, I did hear rumors that the Belt was at the bar early and left before I got there.  I would advise any team holding the belt, that as long as you have a team member at the bar the belt should be there too.  That being said, the Alcobalics had another great turn out at the bar and I still love them to death.  With long term super socialites Amanda Hassell and Becca Darron on the team, I can't stay mad for long.  However, make sure you bring the belt this week, some other team is going to be needing that.

We had a great turn out this week.  Most people seem to stick close to the bar area, but one team that ventured out beyond the wall of booths and was enjoying the trivia at the stage was the always lovable guys in purple.  PBJT was led by the great jean-ed one himself Brent Obershaw.  Half of this team is completely unaware of the tremendous legacy and presence their own team has in this league and all across the Hampton roads area. I'm really glad to see PBJT getting those fresh faces to the bar.

Foul Balls, WAKA'm to the Jungle, Hot Dogs and Tacos, Chaotic KILFS and Five Toe Death Kick all had good representation through the night.

Cardiac Arrest, not always known for being at the bar has brought the lime light every week.  Smoking Bunts, as always, had the core crew Tim, Casey and Shane sticking it out with me till the end even though they couldn't wait around for a photographer to take the kick out photo.

The one team that sticks out for me the most has been biding their time.  Consistently just falling short, but really putting effort into creating a buzz for themselves and the league.  Lots of teams send me messages to lobby for their team to win the belt, but one team always asks, "what more can we do."  I'm very happy to finally announce that the Fireballs have arrived and will show us how to party right this week.

3 Up 3 Down - Episode 104

With special guest, Casey Heck of the Smokin' Bunts!

Kick A$$ Cracks with 1 Win and 1 Non-Win

Are you ready to KICKBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL???!!! Well, duh!  Hey. playing against the Fireball squad felt like being drawn into a 1980's version of (Announcer's voice over) WWE WORLD WIDE WRESTLING!!!! Don't take my word for it...

The Masked Maurader and Speedo Man WWE tag team

Will Rodaligo and JR Giles were trying to be as intimidating as possible to spook the Kick A$$ team into submission.  It almost worked. OK, no it didn't.  This team was amazingly fun to play against! And that Speedo Man guy reminds me of someone.....hmmmmm. ;)  Kick A$$ took a 12-1 victory from this match up and put some nice stats up as well.
Apparently KA is in need of some hair tonic so if anyone cares to donate....

Chris Granados and Patrick Smith took the mound in this game and almost shut them out.  Chris went 2-3, kicking in 4 RKI's! Karen "Silent Killer" Savell went 2-2 and had to run back for a bomb kick for a snag out in left field.  I'm sure there's more stuff that I forgot and will be reminded of shortly.. All in all, the Fireball team captures the essence of kickball sports and commeradery perfectly.  In short, they are nuts.  And I like it...

Gonna set some Situation feet on fire tonight...

Game 2 was a tough one but also just as fun.  Kick A$$ was tested against the highly competative team, The Situation. And I'd say we passed with flying colors. The first thing we noticed is that they chose home when they won RPS, and that means they took Kick A$$ seriously and it was a decision that won the game.   Both defenses were sharp and on top of all plays with very little errors from either side, making it hard to even get on base. Manny Anderson was able to get to 3rd base in the 1st inning but he was unable to be advanced for the score.  And that was the end of our threat.  In turn, Kick A$$ held the Sitch offense to no runs even with bases loaded in one inning. That's to be expected with JC and Hass Dooby on the mound. Stephan Woodard kicked a nice line drive to the lft side of 2nd base where Noelle Walsh was waiting for it and grabbed it right outa the sky. (You go, Boo!) Nick Schmidt of KA had sure hands at first and even snagged a line drive almost over his head for an amazing out. The top of our line up in the 5th inning was completely shut down with 3 up and 3 down. (Dammit!!) And with the final inning came the final blow from Sitch as they loaded up bases with Kyle Lewis, Gene Efird, and pitcher Blake Kalaikai.  George Bunch kicked in the walk-off run bringing the score to 1-0.  It was a true battle with lots of talent on both teams and was amazing to watch and be a part of.
Oh yeah, Jeremy Edge did absolutely nothing in this game...

Is there a kickball game going on??

Next up, another double header against Rumspringa and DCOMB. (The team with the ORIGINAL Speedo Man, Mr. "No Shoes" Bryan Moore)  So tell me, are you ready for some KICKBAAAAAAAAAAALL????!!!
Prepare for some Kick A$$!!!!!!!!!!

Is it WAKA Wednesday YET??!!

How To Lay Down The Perfect Kickball Bunt

We've all heard someone snark, "It's kickball, not bunt-ball!", but the truth remains that the short game is still the most effective way to get base runners on. The fundamentals of kickball are bunt a few people on, move them into scoring position, and then rip a line drive to score some runs.

Sounds easy, right? Well, not so fast. Bunting a kickball with the right accuracy and pace is not only a skill, but dare I say, an art form. Personally, bunting isn't the strongest part of my game, so I reached out to some of the best in the game today to get their tips and feedback. After reading this blog (and many, many reps at practice), the goal is for you all to be painting lines like these tremendous players do.

Rumspringa's Ricky Holmes makes contact with the ball
in mid-stride, while keeping his chest leaning forward.

Get a running start

"The biggest piece of advice I can offer is get a running start." The Situation's Jeremy Edge shared, "It doesn't have to be much, but starting at a standstill severely hampers your speed, unless you're Juice Fitz."

Against elite infields, the difference between being safe and out is often less than a second on even the best bunts. That's why it's important to be moving down the line as fast as possible.

"This is also probably the most difficult part of bunting because attempting to make contact with a moving object while moving yourself take a lot of practice." Edge continued, "However, once you develop your timing, you'll be amazed how much faster you seem. Your run-up will all depend on how comfortable you are at the plate. I personally stand a step behind the left cone for my approach. Some people like a much longer approach."

Don't lean back. Keep your chest over the ball.

"Remember, boobs over ball!", KA's Lisa Fabila stressed. It's important not to lean back. Keep your chest over the ball. If you get caught leaning back, than you increase the odds of popping up.

By leaning forward and staying on top
of the ball, NoShoes ensures that this ball
stays on the grounded.

Make contact with the ball in the upper middle part of the ball.

Cardiac Arrests' Brad Kirby may be one of the most technical bunters in kickball. One of the things he focuses on is where his foot makes contact with the ball, "Watch it all the way to your foot," Kirby continued, "Lift your foot high enough that you're hitting the top of the ball and pushing it down the line. If you hit too low, it's sure to pop up."

Don't follow through too much.

"Lift your knee and come down on the ball trying not to go past your plant leg." Fabila added, "Don't swing your entire leg like it's a golf club."

There is already energy in the ball as it's pitched towards you. You don't need a big swing, but just solid contact. KA's Manny Anderson added, "When bunting, imagine you're kicking a cinder block on contact. Don't allow your bunt leg to go past your plant leg." By doing this, you'll avoid pop ups or bunts that get to the pitcher/charger too rapidly and lead to easy put outs.

Use the instep of your foot and lock the ankle.

"Make sure to keep your ankle locked and you're not just reaching your foot in," Kirby advised, "Bunt with conviction, dammit!"

You wouldn't try to hit a baseball with a floppy bat. So, it doesn't make sense to bunt a kickball with a loose ankle. Keep it locked and point your toe slightly upward while making contact with the ball on the instep of your foot.

Matt Coup shows great form. Ankle locked.
Toe slightly pointing up. Money.

Practice, Practice, PRACTICE!

DCOMB's Erin Rock had some very simple advice, "Go to practice when you can!"

Simple but important. None of these techniques come naturally and take many reps to get the muscle memory in place.

"I try to get to any and every practice I can, even if it's not with my team." Fabila said, "Just to improve in anyway I can. The more practices you get to, the more exposure you will have to different types of pitches, be able to work on timing and tweak anything you feel seems a little off during games."

If you're looking for more training sessions, check out this group on Facebook that specifically organizes open kickball practices and pick up games around the Peninsula. Most Sundays, The Smokin' Bunts' Casey Heck organizes practices at Kiln Creek and encourages anyone to join.

Don't just bunt the ball, be the ball.

"For me, the most important aspects of bunting are mental," Holmes stated, "Confidence, patience, and persistence are key. It's about walking to the plate and knowing that you're going to get on. It's in your body language and the pitches you choose to go after. Pitchers can tell when someone is scared at the plate and they'll take full advantage of it."

In summary, here are the key points to focus on:

  • Get a running start and meet the ball at the plate in stride
  • Lean forward. Boobs over ball!
  • Make contact on the upper half of the ball
  • Don't follow through too much
  • Lock your ankle and make contact with the instep, toe pointed slightly up
  • Get plenty of practice!
  • Be confident.
If you follow this blueprint, soon you'll be bunting just like this:

(Come on, you didn't think I would go this whole post without a little bragging, did you?)

VA Peninsula - Fall '15 Week 3 Round Up

"Create history! Move forward! Never look back!"
It was a beautiful night for kickball on Wednesday. Pretty soon it will be hoodies and layers, but for week 3, it was a warm 80 degrees out. The only thing hotter than the temps was the action on the field. Let's take a look at WAKA VA Peninsula's week 3 round up.

(Reminder: I won't necessarily talk about every team or even every game. With 9 games a night, I obviously can't see or hear about every cool thing that happened on a WAKA Wednesday. If I miss something, please feel free to post in the Facebook comments.)

Results

DCOMB 2, Rumspringa 0
Kick Ass 12, Fireballs 1
PBJT 4, Chaotic KILFs 3
The Situation 1, Kick Ass 0
PBJT 7, Fireballs 3

Cardiac Arrest 1, WAKA'm To The Jungle 0
Smokin' Bunts 9, Five Toe Death Kick 7
Hot Dogs & Tacos 13, Alcobalics 4

News, Notes, and Observations

  • You couldn't ask for a better defensive start than the ones displayed by Cardiac Arrest and DCOMB this season. Both teams have yet to allow a run in their first two victories. And it's not that they've been playing scrubs. DCOMB has shut out Foul Balls and Rumspringa. CA has blanked The Situation and The Jungle. It'll be interesting to see how long both teams can keep this up.
  • Kick Ass nearly joined these two teams in the '0 RA' club. Heading into the 5th inning, they were tied 0-0 against The Situation. After Sitch loaded the bases, George Bunch's single drove earned the walk off win in the 5th.
  • Who would've thought that it would take The Situation 10 innings before they scored their first run of the season?
  • By the way, I predicted the 1-0 win for Cardiac Arrest on last week's 3 Up 3 Down. Thanks to Jill Simms' great running catch of a very deep Geoff Morehart blast in the 5th, the prediction held.
  • The Foul Balls were held completely hitless in their last game, but were determined to reverse that in week 3. Curtis Faubion's triple home run cleared the bases and the defense held the KILFs to a single run.
  • Todd Schimmel and Manny Zapata helped lead DCOMB over Rumspringa with a couple of hard strikes that drove in runs. These two are developing into one of the most prolific 4-5 kicking combos in the league. Although, Todd's status is questionable for week 4. In addition to his healing collarbone injury, he appeared to have hurt his lower leg sliding into home on Wednesday.
You can almost see her thinking, "My husband is an idiot"
  • While we talked a lot about defensive battles above, the Five Toe / Smokin' Bunts game was anything but a pitcher's duel. Sixteen combined runs were scored between the two, with the Bunts come away with the shoot out win. Casey Frye was doing her best Pete Rose impression, diving head first into home twice during the contest. Maybe we should start calling her Casey Hustle?
  • Huge night for the PBJT franchise. With an inexperienced team, many pundits predicted the Jelly to finish in the bottom of the table this season. But the rookies seem to be picking up the game at a much quicker pace than expected and the veterans are providing a consistent stability. Really impressed with their 2-1-1 start. Hats off to captain Christina Obershaw
  • I'm 0-2 in kick away situations since posting my kick away tips on the blog. I am officially declaring myself jinxed.

3 Up 3 Down - Episode 103 (Manny Zapata)

Joining Wellbrock and Wentworth is DCOMB captain Manny Zapata. The crew discusses week 2's results and looks forward to week 3.

I Logo Therefore I Am

Logos, logos, and more logos! Where should I begin?  Every great team, franchise, or brand has a recognizable logo that helps with not only marketing, but also affiliation and recognition.  This week
WAKA Fashion is focusing on logos.  In fact, some of the best teams in the league have some pretty phenomenal logos.  Here are some of the most recognized from Smoking Bunts, Foul Balls, and Hot Dogs and Tacos.

Even if your team does not have a logo yet, don’t feel bad.  Some of the most famous logos were created by accident, so that means you still have time to think of yours, or stumble upon an amazing idea to represent yourselves. In fact, Gerald Holtom, who invented the peace sign, started this well-known symbol as a self-portrait.

Other recognizable logos, like the CBS logo, created by William Golden, were made simply by happenstance as he proved this in basically ripping off 19th Century religious drawings.

So if you do want to get creative with yours, now that you know you would be that much more awesome for doing so, you can check out these well-known logos for inspiration on your creative flair process.   Here you can see hidden symbols creating self-advertisements for the following brands:
Baskin Robbins number 31 in the logo represents its own the 31 delicious flavors.

Fed Ex has a hidden arrow between the E and x to represent the speed of delivery.

The Tostitos logo was created from two people sharing a chip and a bowl of salsa.

Now these logos weren’t just created overnight, so don’t beat yourself up if you can’t think of one right away.  There is a creative thought process involved that is known as the Logo evolution.  To prove this, the Nike “Swoosh” has one of the best stories in evolvement as the design was created in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, who was a graphic design student at Portland State University.  As she was approached to provide design ideas at the time for a rate of $2 per hour, she submitted a total bill of $35 for her work on the logo, and was also given a gold Swoosh ring and an envelope filled with Nike stock as well.  Not too shabby.

The Nike SWOOSH logo itself represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek Goddess of victory, Nike, who was the source of inspiration for many great and courageous warriors. According to legends, a Greek would say, “When we go to battle and win, we say it is Nike.” Originally, the mark was referred to as ‘the strip’ but was later changed to ‘Swoosh’ to describe the fibers used in Nike shoes. In the spring of 1972, the first shoe with the Nike SWOOSH Logo was introduced; thus, the evolution of Nike.  What will your inspiration be?
Overall, I think more teams in the league should get in on the logo bandwagon, as it has proven to not only provide comradery amongst teammates, but also create a distinguished recognition for that team that can’t be missed.  So moral of the story is, get your flair up so we don’t have to talk about this anymore.
