Spring 2017 VA Peninsula Bowling

Wow! Thank you everyone for making this a spectacular season of bigger, better, and wobblier bowling!!! All CLUBWAKA had to do was secure a few lanes weekly. It's thanks to you that this league and community have grown to be so incredible in just a few months. Congratulations to Fresh Prince of Big Spares for winning the Bud Light trophy (sorry again for the mix-up) and to 8 Ballz & 2 Splitz for winning the cup (maybe someday we’ll name the two trophies/tournaments).
I can honestly say, "This picture was not Photoshop-ed."

I'd like to especially thank Nathan Huffman and Lee Craig for each taking on the task of captaining teams made up of free agents, DJ Paola Babrow for coordinating the music and always being the epitome of entertainment, Corie Ann and James Butner for joining us from CLUBWAKA Richmond, all the team captains for great communication before and during the season, and obviously my wife for putting up with me and my CLUBWAKA love affairs.

VA Atlantic Kickball - Spring 2017 - Week 3

News

After a couple days of rain Virginia Beach Parks and Rec canceled the games for Monday night due to poor field conditions. Wet, saturated, and sloppy were the descriptors used.

With so many rain-outs one might ask, "How will we make them all up?" I'm glad you asked! Extending the season isn't an option as we have a summer season at Bayville Farms Park on Monday nights. We could add a third time slot for games (8:30-9:30pm), but that means playing much later, getting additional field time, and less bar time as well. The best option is to add a third field. This does present one difficulty though. With three fields, six teams will be playing at once, leaving just one team to ref all three games. I've already talked with the captains and most teams are confident they can handle it. So what we're going to do is move ahead with the three field plan and make it work as well as we can. In the next couple weeks, captains will be assigning extra refs to games so players who haven't refereed before can gain some experience. There will also be some schedule changes to make all this work as well. We started the season with 8 games on the schedule for each team and my goal is to make sure every team gets at LEAST eight games this season.

The official WAKA Kickball Rules have been updated. Good news, you all have been playing with the updated rules already! However, there are some better pictures in this set of rules showing you things like fair/foul balls and the strike zone.

If you have somehow missed all the announcements there is a Mid-Atlantic Kickball Tournament happening on 6-May. The charity being supported is the Sentara Cancer Network Mission Fund. You can find out more on the registration page.

That isn't the only thing happening on Saturday May the 6th. There is going to be a huge party at Peabody's on the Oceanfront. I say huge because this party is our mid-season party AND the after party for the Mid-Atlantic Tournament. There will be no cover charge if you participate in the tournament or are part of the VA Atlantic spring season (pick up your wristband at the door). No party would be complete with some perks so we'll have at least four kegs of free beer until 11pm and $3 drink specials until 9pm.

Life of the Party (LOTP)

Guidelines ] [ Standings ]

With a surprisingly large turnout for a rain-out, LOTP was in full effect at Bucketheads.
  • Two teams showed up with 5 or more players at the bar (Pandas and Jiminy) repeating their feat from last week, however no one had 10 players for the bonus points.
  • Our bar game was trivia with twenty randomly generated questions. Four teams participated (Pandas, Jiminy, B&D, and Your Mom) but three were tied with 7 questions correct after the first set of questions. Pandas, Jiminy, and B&D all went into the 5 question overtime round where Jiminy walked away with 3 correct answers and the victory.
  • Most were scared or confused by the weekly theme Anything But Clothing, but not Jiminy they showed up in force and also snagged the 1st-3rd place costumes.
2nd and 3rd Place - Take your pick!

1st Place - Yes those are fish

  • The photo of the week category was WAKA-Shame. Jiminy Kickit walks away as the "winner" with the only entries.
#jiminykickit #sleepitoff

#jiminykickit #morningafter #thatswhatfriendsarefor

  •  With no games taking place no points were earned for Field Manager Love or Ref Love.
Jiminy Kickit continues to balance their field performance with a strong social presence. A theme week sweep, bar attendance, and trivia all extended their lead in the standings. However, it came to light that extensive child labor was utilized to make the costumes and there is potential PETA action in the works.

VA Peninsula Kickball: Week 1 Bar Buzz

Being unsuccessful at finding a replacement, I find myself unable to let an opening week go by without at least a half-assed attempt to write a blog (actually, I think I only ever gave it a full-assed attempt once).

If you are new to WAKA Peninsula and you made it out to Tapps last week, you might have noticed one of the biggest belt buckles you've ever seen being passed around all night.  Every organization over the years creates and adopts its own traditions.  WAKA Peninsula is no exception.  This blog will be a quick run down on what you can expect to see this season and hopefully you will participate fully every week.

First is that big shiny thing is actually a belt, full on metal on leather super high quality, heavy weighted, doesn't fit my fat ass belt.  Just like in that other sport where people run around a squared circle and kick and throw things at each other.  The belt changes hands (almost) every week to the team that I, your humble Bar Buzz Brad, deem to be worthy or just because I'm tired of F3B and Alcoballics winning it every week.

Getting the belt isn't very hard, you simple have to enjoy your time at Tapps, but it helps if you can take pictures, get my attention or point out your post game activities on some public forum just to help me out in knowing what happened in case my attention was elsewhere.  Two other traditions we participate in each week is the After Midnight photo (AMP) and the kick out photo.  Those don't always happen in the same order.  I prefer it if they do happen in that order, so please pace yourself and drink responsibly at least until midnight if you can.

This is a great AMP!

I swear we had more but they couldn't wait.

Some of the bad boys and girls out back.

I know some of you are extra responsible and can't make it out that late, but I certainly encourage you to come out and get to know your team and them branch out to other teams.  In order to facilitate the Bar Buzz competition each week I USUALLY include a challenge in my blog.  It is only the second week, so take some time and get to know your team.  Post pictures of you with a teammate that you didn't know before or didn't know well and then comment an intro about the for the rest of us.

VA Atlantic Kickball - Spring 2017 - Week 2

News

So this happened...

Then this...

Real life...

What happens when you merge charity and kickball? The WAKA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament! It's happening on May the 6th so time is running out, sign up today.

Game Recaps

Scores ] [ Standings ]

Misfits (7) vs. 50 Shades of Panda (6)
In a rain shortened game Misfits came away with their league leading second win of the season. This win has doubled their total from last season. Is it the name change? Is it the tie-dye t-shirts? All I know is they're still rocking it on the field every game!

Bed Bath & Your Mom (3) vs. Jiminy Kickit (0)
In a close scoring game that was called in the 5th inning, the biggest event that got everyone's attention on both fields was the collision of Ricky and Brian. Fortunately no one was injured on the play! Cory was willing to give it all to finish the game, asking if he could voluntarily stay and play after the thunder and lightning.

It was wet. - Cory Pochop (Jiminy)
Gotta hand it to the Jiminy Kickit defense. Usually rain games are high scoring affairs but they held Your Mom in check. Cortney Calkins Edwards caught everything in her vicinity. BB&YM ladies got it done too. Liza Maula, Nicole Dewey, & Jen Cianciolo all got on base as our first 3 kickers & Leha Green kicked a run in. Mimi Hayden had a sick line drive too. - Will Menzies (Your Mom)

Life of the Party (LOTP)

Guidelines ] [ Standings ]

The gauntlet was thrown down at Bucketheads as Cortney (Jiminy) proclaimed that the social competition was over because she had returned! Bravado or bluster? Find out below! Before I get into the point breakdowns I'll note that points can still be achieved by teams who had the late games that didn't get to play. They will of course have to earn those points on their makeup game day.
  • Two teams showed up with 5 or more players at the bar (Pandas and Jiminy), however no one had 10 players for the bonus points.
  • Four teams participated in the 20 Questions Bar game (Pandas, Jiminy, KR4K, and Your Mom) but only three (Jiminy, KR4K, Your Mom) were able to complete all the questions and they all tied as winners for the bar game. Isn't that day of the month birthday question a total pain?
  • The weekly theme saw Pandas, Jiminy, Misfits, and Your Mom get in on the action.
3rd Place

2nd Place
Your Mom with creative blue sideburns

The rain didn't play well with the paint and
a camera was also sacrificed in the attempt
to get photographic evidence at the field.

1st Place

  • The photo of the week category was Puns. Three teams enter, but only ONE leaves! Jiminy tried stacking the deck with multiple submissions and even tried to claim one picturing Your Mom. All was for naught as Jessica (Pandas) sacrificed her very health to bring you...

Winner

(Yes, she actually got sick after the rain game #ForTheTeam)

  • Field Manager Love was earned by Jiminy, Misfits, and KR4K.
  • Ref Love was earned by Misfits.
All said and done Jiminy Kickit did squeeze out a win with 20 points and they hold the overall lead with 38 points. However, Pandas closed the gap after a weaker opening week and look poised to challenge along with Your Mom.

VA Atlantic Kickball - Spring 2017 - Week 1

News

Hear about VA Atlantic running for the first time on Monday nights this Summer? Hear about the flash sale happening ONLY THIS WEEKEND? You know you're going to play on Monday nights again so why not save a few bucks and get registered for the lowest price you're going to see!

Team Introduction

VA Atlantic has grown by one team since Fall, let's take a look at the competition this season.

  50 Shades of Panda
(the team formerly known as Kung Fu Pandas)
Captain: Ella Pierce
Commonly referred to as the Pandas, this team is back with a major revamp. Loaded up with a lot of new first-timers to kickball and a just few skilled veterans, can they get into form by the playoffs?

  Balls and Dolls
Captain: Lisa Maes
New team for Monday nights, composed with experienced players from previous seasons and a few new players. Expectations are high from the veterans on the team as they look to improve on their finishes from prior seasons.

  Bed Bath & Your Mom
Captain: Will Menzies
After a heartbreaking loss in the championship last season, the old Gucci Dolphins were looking for a new start. The core of the team reformed and picked up a few quality players to round out their roster. The sky is the limit for 'Your Mom' and they expect to be right back in the final this season with a different result.

  Elite Kickball Status
Captain: Adam Tatem
New to the league, but not kickball, this mystery team comes in with just one goal...a VA Atlantic championship. Filled with experienced players and a lot of talent, who can stop this powerhouse in 2017?

  Jiminy Kickit
Captain: Cory Pochop
Jiminy Kickit is a regular fixture in the VA Atlantic scene. Cory brings back a team every season, often rebuilding, but his team always ends up in the hunt by the end. Don't count 'Jiminy' out until they've been defeated in the playoffs.

  Kicks R 4 Kidz
Captain: Aaron Moriarty
'KR4K' is back for their second season in VA Atlantic. Composed of a small core and a lot of new free agents last season they grew into a formidable team. A bit of a sleeper this season, KR4K picked up a few free agents who can make them a contender.

  Misfits
Captain: Abby Rosa
Misfits is back, although with name change from For Shot and Kicks. Huge upgrade in my opinion, but who am I to judge? Last season Misfits only managed one win, but they had fun on the field each and every Monday night. A lot of people are writing off the Misfits but beware, they aren't all first-time players anymore.

Game Recaps

[ Scores ] [ Standings ]

Elite Kickball Status (8) vs. Bed Bath & Your Mom (5)
This opening season game was billed as a potential championship preview and it didn't disappoint. In a tight, but moderately scoring game, Elite edged out Your Mom 8-5.

Leha Green, in her very first kickball game, kicked a laser between 1st & 2nd, and scored a run. - Will Menzies (Your Mom)

Kicks R 4 Kidz (12) vs. Misfits (2)
In a game of former teammates the captains of KR4K and Misfits faced off in their season opener. KR4K led from start to finish, powered by two home runs and solid defense.

The Misfits lead-off combo of Lerie Spicer and Kilian Nicholls was on point in the early game. Every time they came up a couple minutes later we'd be in a jam facing a runner on 1st and 2nd with no outs! - Ryan Kiel (KR4K)
Both Davin Field and Aaron Moriarty had three run homers for KR4K. - Ryan Kiel (KR4K)

50 Shades of Panda (9) vs. Balls and Dolls (9)
In one of the most surprising games of the night, Pandas took B&D down to the wire and tied it up late. Panda has the most new kickball players in the league and can definitely count this one as a win against an experienced team and one of the best pitchers around. Other teams will definitely take notice of the Pandas after their week one performance.

James Loriol had a grand slam. - Will Menzies (Your Mom)

Can't even be mad about James grand slam! - Lisa Maes (B&D)

Shout out to Kathleen for being our team MVP and Parker for stepping up and being able to play multi positions for us! - Lisa Maes (B&D)

Cripple makes it to 2nd base 💪🏼 - Kathleen Aka Kit Kat Moodie (B&D)

Misfits (10) vs. Jiminy Kickit (5)
With Misfits looking to repeat their lone win from last season and Jiminy Kickit looking for revenge, this game didn't disappoint! As Misfits slowly took over the game their excitement was contagious and had almost all the spectators rooting for them.

Megan Tipton, Cory Clark and Stephanie Flitton had some amazing bunts scoring runs and moving players. - Cory Pochop (Jiminy)

Jennifer Ross did an amazing job bunting, on the bases, and had a great play at 3rd. Stephanie Marie had an amazing play in which she knocked the ball down and got it to third for the out, and scored some runs. Kilian Nicholls made some awesome plays at catcher and had a home run. Loren made a phenomenal catch to end the game and Stephanie F and Khoa Nguyen made some amazing catches in the outfield. My whole team was stand out. - Abby Rosa (Misfits)

Life of the Party (LOTP)

This week's LOTP was a bit on the easy side. No theme or bar game for the week, but there was a photo contest and all the other categories like presence at the sponsor bar and league support. We also took it easy on teams for the #hashtag and posting requirements listed in the guidelines...but get ready for next week. No photo/post, no points! Jiminy Kickit started out strong as the returning social champion from last season, however they look to have strong competition from Bed Bath & Your Mom. Both teams are tied with 18 points headed into week two!

Pandas, B&D, Jiminy, and Your Mom all had strong showings at the bar with 5 or more players but Jiminy brought out 10 players with photo evidence! Each team except B&D had a team photo and since I can't pick just one all submissions tied as the winner. KR4K, Misfits, and Your Mom score extra points for Field Manager Love while Your Mom also snagged the only Ref Love points.

Player Submissions
Stephanie F. from JK played in her first kickball game ever, this was also her first time being on a team of any sort. She was really nervous cause she is left handed, but she had a fabulous kick and got to first (even though we got an out elsewhere). She's my rockstar!!! - Jacqueline Ceniceros (Jiminy)
This season marks my one year anniversary with WAKA. In addition to the number of friends and memories I have gained, I have also added several colorful t-shirts to my wardrobe. There's a handful of great ideas to start your week out, and Monday Night Kickball is one of them. Here's to a great season! - Rio Caras (Your Mom)
Week one field photos. - Liza Maula (Your Mom)

CLUBWAKA Brewery Bus Tour - Important Info

Thank you all for joining us on the inaugural CLUBWAKA Brewery Bus Tour! We're really excited to have everyone join us for this cool event. I want to take a moment to go over some information to help everyone prepare for a great time on Saturday.

Today is the day!!! A couple of additional notes and then a reminder of the schedule info.

DRIVE SAFE: We are going to drink a lot of beer today. A LOT. Make sure you have a good plan for getting home. A reminder that we purchased some Uber codes to help. Please use the following Uber codes to help pay for your safe ride home.

  • Oozlefinch: Authentic German Food Truck
  • O'Connor: Captain Crabby
  • Coelacanth: Waffletina

  • 6 PM: BOARD BUS - Travel back to Oozlefinch
SCHEDULE NOTES:
  • We will do our best to stay within the scheduled time frames, but all of these are estimated time frames. Travel time between each venue will vary so we'll make some adjustments on the fly. Our goal is to make sure that we have a solid 45-60 minutes at each brewery before.
  • With that said, it's important that when time is called that we move efficiently to the bus and get ready to board. I don't think it'll take us too long to board the bus. We won't have any TSA screenings or metal detectors, so when it's time to go, we can go!
  • When it is time to move on to the next brewery, we'll make an announcement. To help keep track of everyone, we recommend that everyone organizes into small groups of 4-5 people to practice the buddy system. This way, it'll be easier for us to account for everyone, since we'll be able to go directly to each group to get a quick count. If you have a group of friends, please let me know who should be put together. If you don't have a group, let me know and I'll match you up with others... For those familiar with the kickball.com system, you can create your friend groups from your profile as well. The last thing we want is to leave someone in the bathroom of Bold Mariner while we drive back to Hampton!!!
BUS RULES:
  • NO alcohol is permitted on the bus. I know, I know, but we have 4+ hours of brewery hopping so we can save the boozing for the stops.
  • Please do not leave trash on the bus. Anyone who gets out of control or destructive may be denied entry onto the bus. (CLUBWAKA will get charged for any excessive cleaning or damage, and we don't want that happening)
  • Neither the bus company or CLUBWAKA is responsible for any lost or misplaced items. Please do not leave any personal property on the bus.
  • The coolest kids sit in the back.
CHARITY
A portion of every seat sold will benefit the American Cancer Society through our Relay for Life team, CLUBWAKA KICKS CANCER. Thank you all for your support. Together, the funds we raise will help provide support for vital cancer research and help those fighting this terrible disease. For more information about Relay for Life and to join our team, please click here

ADDITIONAL SEATS: There is still room for more to join us, as of this e-mail we are not quite at capacity. If you have any friends that are interested, tell them to sign up! We'll keep registration open until Saturday or whenever we hit our max (55). kickball.com/vabrewerybustour

SOCIAL MEDIA: If you haven't already, please join our Facebook event and be sure to check-in during the afternoon. Let's give everyone on Facebook some serious FOMO. Also, if you're using Twitter or Instagram, please add the hashtag #CLUBWAKABreweryTour, so we can find your posts and give you some likes. You want likes, right?

For any questions, feedback, or if there is anything I can help you with, please don't hesitate to reach out. As the event coordinator, my goal is for everyone to have a great time together on Saturday. I really appreciate you all joining us for the first ever Brewery Bus Tour!
