#WAKAWednesday - Week 2 Recap

What week are we talking about, Matt?

In the immortal words of Matt Wellbrock, "It's all about that pie, baby." I don't know what that really means, but it's provocative and I couldn't think of a better way to start the week 2 blog. Let's jump right into it!

RUMSPRINGA 16, PUMPED UP KICKS 1

The big legs up and down the Rumspringa lineup put stress on the inexperienced Pumped Up Kicks outfield. Felipe Cornejo, Daniel Shaw, and Matt Wellbrock all went yard in the romp. There were some highlights for the Kicks though, including this great effort by the pitcher (name?) to peg a 'Springa runner up the line. The charger also made some good plays including snagging a hard liner late in the game.

The charger also made some good plays including snagging a hard line drive late in the game.

F3B 8, BOOS ON FIRST 2

Boos on First came into this contest riding high after tying the defending champs in the opener but fell a little flat. F3B's offense exploded for 8 runs and took advantage of a few defensive miscues to earn a big early dub.

RUMSPRINGA 3, F3B 0

Daniel Shaw showed why he is the best hurler in the game by shutting down the high powered F3B offense, striking out 2 kickers. Cornejo and Daniel Waff drove in a run each in the 2nd to give 'Springa all the runs they'd need in the contest.

The defensive showdown was streamed live on Facebook for those who want to watch on demand.

PBJT 13, PUMPED UP KICKS 1

A rematch from last week, with pretty much the same results as the score ended up being 13-1 in both contests. PUK's Brian Hetland gave PBJT a shout out inside the Facebook group for being great sports and sticking around after the game to share some tips and play a fun scrimmage. He also apologized for 'being too vocal' citing 'too much pregame beer'.

Only 1 team in CLUBWAKA Wednesday Night Kickball has finished a season undefeated and won the Wentworth Trophy® and that was The Emperors Club back in the Fall of 2009. With F3B's loss tonight, the members of that team popped the champagne and celebrated their record once again staying intact.

WINGING IT

Another great turnout at B-Dubs with the Caps/Hurricanes game 7 on. The service was much better as they learned some valuable lessons from week 1. The pitchers were flowing wonderfully!

Get 10% off food, $7 pitchers, and your Blazin' Reward points this week while enjoying the following games on the TVs.

  • NBA Playoffs Rd 2: Portland @ Denver (Nuggets lead 1-0)
  • NHL Playoffs Rd 2: New York Islanders @ Carolina (Hurricanes lead 2-0)
  • NHL Playoffs Rd 2: St Louis @ Dallas (Blues lead 2-1)
  • MLB: A full slate of games with almost every team in action

If you joined us this weekend for WAKAPALOOZA NORFOLK you saw first hand how much fun a single day kickball tournament can be. Our next charity kickball is right around the corner, so you won't want to miss it. We're taking the game to the beach with a CHARITY SAND KICKBALL TOURNAMENT to benefit the Sentara Foundation. Because we're playing on the beach, we'll be using a bigger ball, shorter base paths and dropping the fielders to 8 (4 male & 4 females). This is part of the North American Sand Soccer Weekend, so the Oceanfront is going to be the place to be! For full details and to join, please visit  https://www.clubwaka.com/hampton-roads/kickball/saturday/4512

*BREAKING NEWS* F3B has got their sunscreen ready and is the first team to begin forming! Who else is going to the Bash at the Beach??

WEEK 3 PREVIEW

6:30 PM: F3B (2-1) vs PUMPED UP KICKS (0-4)

The rookies will be looking to make progress against a tough F3B team trying to rebound after their first loss.

6:30 PM: PBJT (2-1) vs BOOS ON FIRST (1-1-1)

It took a walk-off kick to advance PBJT past Boos On First in the Fall playoffs. Boos on First have had all winter to look forward to this rematch.

7:30 PM: Rumspringa (2-1-1) vs PBJT (2-1)

Another rematch from the Fall 2018 playoffs is on tap, this time between the two finalists for The Wentworth Trophy®.

7:30 PM: F3B vs BOOS ON FIRST

A rematch from week 2 gives BOF an immediate chance at redemption after falling 8-2 against F3B.

The weather is looking FINE. Spring kickball, baby!

Looking forward to seeing you all at War Memorial Wednesday night. Reminder: Be sure to join the Facebook group and share your shoutouts so I can include them in the blog! My bullshit is so much better if I can just copy and paste from your stories!

WAKAPalooza Norfolk - Thank you

It's been a few days, and I'm finally getting to catch my breath a bit, so it's time to reflect on this weekend and give some thanks. I appreciate you all for joining us for a very fun WAKAPALOOZA NORFOLK! Congratulations to SITCH & AVENGERS BUNTGAMES for winning the championships in the competitive and charity divisions. Sitch had a few scares in pool play but come eliminations, they were dominant! After tying their first game of the morning, the Avengers ran the table on the way to the title. What stood out on the day for me, on both sides of the event, it was an overwhelmingly positive day of kickball.

For their victory, Sitch has earned a $500 prize while on the charity side, $500 will be donated to The Sentara Cancer Network Mission Funds. This wing of the Sentara Foundation helps provide critical care and support for underprivileged cancer patients right here in Hampton Roads!

Some Thanks:

  • Thank you to all the captains: Matt Coup, Kate Alyse, Mike Sprow, Alex Noctor, Journey Schmidt, Shelly Dana, Ryan Kiel, and Leha Green. I mentioned above that it was a very positive atmosphere at the fields and that's because of your leadership. Being a captain is too often a thankless job. I want you all to know that you are appreciated.
  • Thank you to the staff at PBR Norfolk and Torch Bistro for hosting our social events on Friday and Saturday night. Great times were had!
  • Shout out to Tidewater Orthopedics. Thankfully, we had no major injuries on Saturday, but it's nice to know that if something did go wrong we had an athletic trainer on site to provide care. Also, they provided the towels that soaked up our sweat and the coozies that kept our cans cold!
  • Thank you to the City of Norfolk for allowing us to play on Saturday.
  • Big thanks to Bryan Freed. Unfortunately, work obligations prevented him from playing on Saturday, but that didn't stop him from coming out and helping with the field setup. Freed, you da real MVP.
  • HUGE thank you to our CLUBWAKA Staff, Ryan Kiel and Yanitza Borrero. This event would not have happened at all without their efforts. They deserve all the praise possible!
  • Finally, to whoever left the Ice in one of the boxes of equipment. One day, I hope we find out who did it so I can properly thank you.

We hope you all enjoyed your weekend and hope you plan on joining us for our next one-day tournament on June 8th at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. That's right. We're playing kickball on the beach! It's a unique 8v8 game on a shorter field with a larger ball. And it's for a good cause as proceeds from the event will benefit the Sentara Cancer Network. Come join us on the beach this summer! For more info and to join visit the activity website and join our Facebook event!

CLUBWAKA MLS - Spring 2019 Week 4

WEEK 4 - Breakin'

When Brent and I were putting together the schedule, we had some concerns about having to have what amounts to three Sundays off to accommodate Easter, Memorial Day, and the Sand Soccer Tourney.  That's not including the fact that we may end up having to play on Mother's Day and Father's Day.  But now that we've come to break 1 after 4 games, I think it's a perfect time to chill out, max, relax all cool, go to church, see your family, and reflect on CLUBWAKA MLS Spring 2019 happenings.

So that's what we're doing on this lovely Easter.  Midseason reflection y'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaall.

But first...

HOUSEKEEPING

1.  The Lost and Found is overflowing.  I literally have 10 water bottles in my garage from people forgetting them every week and like 3 extra soccer balls.  So I'll be bringing those out on 4/28 for people to pick them up.  But going forward, please please please remind your players post-game to grab their stuff so I don't need to rent a storage space for CLUBWAKA MLS Lost and Found.

2.  Every week I hear from at least 2-3 players about something they didn't agree with in regards to referee calls.  This midseason blog is a good place to remind everyone that the refs are human and are covering an entire field by themselves.  GIVE THEM A BREAK.  And in regards to that, I think it's up to each team to semi-police themselves.  If a ball is out of bounds, give it to the other team -- don't try to cheat the system.  If you fouled someone, don't flip out and walk the other way, help the person up, apologize, and take the whistle.  If a new ref doesn't know a rule, tell it to them without screaming.

And just a reminder for all you a) litterers and b) players trying to get one over on the ref:

3. Mother's Day is coming up 5/12.  As I sent out previously, we're doing Mother's Day photos for the second consecutive year.  Unfortunately, if I'm going to get them printed so you can have them a week before Mother's Day (5/5), that only leaves us this coming up Sunday to get them done.  I'll be coming back from a wedding in DC that AM and won't be there very early on that Sunday but will be around all day and will be glad to stay after (my game is at 1 PM that day).  I won't be coming around to solicit each team, so if you want one just come find me and we can straight Olan Mills those Ft. Monroe fields.  Here's a couple examples from last week.

WEEK 4 RESULTS AND STANDINGS

Kick in a Box vs. Defenders of the Bridge

This game was a back and forth affair that ended with a last second free kick blast by Ryan O'Donnell to earn a point against Defenders of the Bridge.  Scott Hines had me feeling those regrets post-game for not getting his second goal on camera and his subsequent shirt removal celebration.  I tried to encourage the ref to give him a straight red for his overenthusiastic celebration, but he wasn't havin it.

Final - Kick in a Box 2 - 2 Defenders of the Bridge

All Bark No Bite vs. Oozlekicks

Call off the dogs.  Oozlekicks collared All Bark No Bite with a 10 goal explosion led by Tom Weniger's 4 goals.  Despite being the in winless column, All Bark No Bite still has a lot of fight in them and will look to get on track in Week 5 against Kick in a Box.

Final - Oozlekicks 10 - 0 All Bark No Bite

Look Ma No Hands vs. Netkicks and Chill

GAME OF THE WEEK.  The undefeated Netkicks team taking on a solid top half team in Look Ma.  Netkicks took a commanding lead early with goals by Brendan Fajotina and Daryl Kuligowski in the first half.  The second half proved to be a different story as Look Ma continued fighting back (Scott George with another brace) and had chances to even the score late.  Ultimately, Netkicks prevailed and continues to sit at the top of the table having only given up 4 goals all season.

Final - Netkicks and Chill 4 - 3 Look Ma, No Hands

White Joggers vs. Hot & Messi

White Joggers took on Hot and Messi in a very evenly matched game on paper but in speaking with H&M captain Dave Chappell prior to the game, half their roster is out with injuries.  Luckily the Pink Patrol have a 19 person roster.  In a game where there was a lot of referee chirping and a couple of cards, White Joggers continued their hot streak with a 6 goal outpouring and some absolutely miraculous saves from their keeper Matthew Carpenter.

Final - White Joggers 6 - 3 Hot & Messi

Retired Athletes vs. Hangover 86 FC

After last season's jump up the table, Hangover was dealt a tough early season schedule - having to face Ronaldo, Misfits, and Moat all in the first three games.  In week 4, they took on a Retired Athletes team that has been up and down thus far.  Both teams fought hard trying to earn that first win of the year.  Hangover was led by Jerald Jorge who was all over the field and Jordan Yingling for a hell of a shout outside of the box.  Ultimately, the couldn't break the stalemate with Retired Athletes earning their second draw of the season.  How anti-climactic!

Final - Retired Athletes 2 - 2 Hangover 86 FC

Misfits vs. Biercelona

Misfits cranked the volume up to 11 in the first few minutes of the game with goals by Blake Sexton and Davin Field early.  With Misfits setting the tone, it was too much for Biercelona to come back from despite solid efforts by Drew Shotts and Brandy Jayne.  In this one, there was controversy as the Biercelona keeper punted, the referee penalized them with a free kick outside of the box (should have been at half field) and Blake scored on the free kick.

Final - Misfits 5 - 1 Biercelona

All Stars FC vs. Ronaldo McDonaldo

In the day's only battle of undefeateds, Ronaldo McDonaldo worked hard on defense to attempt to stifle the potent offense of All Stars FC.  Led by Leland Remias, Anderzon Rojas, and Valentin Valencia, they have been on a goalscoring tear.  With Steve Midlik and Frank Council holding down the back for Ronaldo McDonaldo, Dara Emami broke out to bag a hat trick as Ronaldo went on to down the All Stars and stay undefeated on the season.

Final - Ronaldo McDonaldo 5 - 1 All Stars FC

Moat Monsters vs. PKs and IPAs

Like Retired Athletes, PKs and IPAs has been up and down each game of the season thus far.  As everyone in the league knows, Moat Monsters has the talent to win the championship every season and they certainly showed it in Week 4.  Led by Matthew Burleson and Sarah Watson, Moat put the pedal to the metal and put 10 in the ol' onion bag.

Moat Monsters 10 - 2 PKs and IPAs

Being that we're at midseason, let's take a look at the standings and see what the playoff matchups would be as of today.  As a reminder, the top 8 will vie for the CLUBWAKA MLS Cup and the second half of the table will be playing for the MLS League Two Cup.

MLS Cup Playoffs

(1) Netkicks and Chill vs. (8) Misfits - VERY tough first game for the 1 seed.
(2) Ronaldo McDonaldo vs. (7) Look Ma No Hands - an age old battle of grizzled vets.
(3) White Joggers vs. (6) All Stars FC - two relatively new teams bring a lot of intrigue to the top of the table
(4) Oozlekicks vs. (5) Moat Monsters - would be the game of the week - definitely.

Talk about some amazing games in the first round of the MLS Cup Bracket!  Woooooo weeeeee!

League Two Cup Playoffs

(9) PKs and IPAs vs. (16) All Bark No Bite - PKs and IPAs finish at the top of the second table while All Bark No Bite look for their second playoff win.
(10) Biercelona vs. (15) Hangover 86 FC - I'd call this a rivalry game at this point.  Think they've played each other a few times.
(11) Defenders of the Bridge vs. (14) Retired Athletes - the second table battle of the noobs.
(12) Kick in a Box vs. (13) Hot and Messi - Prepare yourself for some PINK ON PINK CRIME.

TEAM OF THE WEEK - WEEK 4

Tom Weniger - 4 goals.  Probably could have been more.

Sarah Watson - A brace for Moat Monsters in their blowout win against PKs.

Ryan O'Donnell - A blast of a free kick earned his team a point in a draw against DOTB.

Scott Hines - People on Bourbon Street flash for beads.  Scott Hines flashes for goals.  A brace and a shirtless celebration earn him TOTW honors.

Daryl Kuligowski - Was tough choosing between him and Brendan Fajotina who continue to have Netkicks on the top of the table.  But 2 goals > 1 goal as the tiebreaker.

Brandy Jayne - Held down defense the whole game for Biercelona while taking on Misfits beast of an offense.  Way to hold down the fort, Brandy!

Matthew Carpenter - This guy has (had?) balls.  Saves upon saves upon saves to limit Hot and Messi's goal count and lead White Joggers up the table -- currently sitting in third.

THE RACE FOR THE GOLDEN BOOT

215 goals thus far this year -- they just keep coming.

With his 4 goals against All Bark No Bite, Tom Weniger has cleared a little space at the top of the leaderboard.  Matt Burleson (who plays defense in some games, mind you) currently sits at 2 with a couple of newcomers - Valentin Valencia and Trey Engleburg lining up with Fall's leader - Mike Machie with 6 goals a piece.

Dara Emami of Ronaldo McDonaldo is slighhhhhtly outnumbered in the box as Mike Machie serves one up.

The Karate Kid (White Joggers keeper Matthew Carpenter) makes a save in the game against Hot and Messi.  Although I'm still struggling to figure out exactly what is going on here.

In CLUBWAKA MLS, all games have a happy ending.

Chad: This smells like grass.  Markis: All I see is ass.  Leonard: *slow clap*

WEEK 5 AT OOZLEFINCH
Not sure who the food truck will be yet but I'm damn sure they'll be serving up some deliciously cold brews, dudes!

Wheezin' the ju-uice.

GAME OF THE WEEK - WEEK 5

Biercelona vs. Hangover 86 FC

With Hangover recovering from their brutal early schedule, they're ready to get a win and Biercelona currently sit on the cusp of the top 8.  I'm not sure why I see this one as such a rivalry game, but having  played a few times in the past, I think it'll be intense.  You know what else is intense?  Camping.

See you next Sunday and I hope you all have a very Happy Easter!  Try not to accost the Easter Bunny, you hooligans!

Peninsula Kickball - Spring '19 Week 1 Round Up

It's a new season of #WAKAWednesday. *cracks knuckles* Time to write a long-ass blog about it that nobody asked for. Let's go!

GAME RECAPS

BOOS ON FIRST 12, PUMPED UP KICKS 0

This was a matchup between the two least tenured teams in the league. Boos on First kicked off their sophomore season with a total beatdown of the freshly Pumped Up Kicks playing in their first adult kickball game. Powered by a Tom Sullivan home run (all it cost him was one of his hamstrings) it was a steady stream of runs. We stop officially counting once we hit the mercy (12 after 3 innings), but altogether 27 runs were scored.

😬

Touch 'em all, Tom.

F3B 4, PBJT 1

A stout defensive performance from F3B locked up the Jelly offense and earned a big early win. A small bit of vengeance after PBJT eliminated F3B in the semi-finals of the Fall playoffs.

PBJT 13, PUMPED UP KICKS 1

The only good thing about losing a game by almost 4 touchdowns, is that you have nowhere to go but up. And while this game was still lopsided, lots of progress was made by the PUKs. "Without ever meeting before the first game and most never playing adult kickball, Pumped Up Kick had a drastic improvement from the first game to the second," captain Brad Gault said afterward, "I'm really excited to see this team grow together. Of course, as with any team I captain, we brought it at the bar."

For the Jelly, it was a well-rounded performance with Alex Jackson kicking his first home run of the season.

RUMSPRINGA 3, BOOS ON FIRST 3

Boos on First went from playing a team in their first kickball game ever to a team that is starting their 19th season and is fresh of winning the prestigious Wentworth Trophy® in the Fall. They were more than up for the challenge, and that started right from the beginning with BoF winning the pregame 3-person boat race to earn home-field advantage.

Relax those throats, boys.

After shutting the top of the 'Springa lineup out, the Boos jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The defending champs offense were being stymied by rookie pitcher Kory Kling. That is until Mike Cogan drove in two runs with a drive up the middle with 2-outs in the third. Clutch.

In the fourth inning, Rumspringa took a 3-2 lead after Matt Wellbrock patiently worked the count and drew a bases-loaded walk. With Rumspringa calling in their ace, Daniel Shaw, to close it out, this one looked like it was over. But Boos on First was not ready to write it off. Jason Engle lead off for the Boos with a single, went first to third on the next play, and then was driven in by a hard grounder from the foot of Kling. Just like that, the game was knotted up.

Before Rumspringa could even start a rally in the top of the 5th, the Boos on First defense shut it down. Bryan Koscielny had the play of the night, diving to rob Mike Ramey of a line drive single. Peter Murray followed it up by leaping to snag a Brian Yohn kick.

All in all, it was a fantastic game, and I personally look forward to meeting this team again soon. Most of the game was live-streamed on Facebook if you want to check it out. Come for the kickball action. Stay for the warm and dulcet narration by Mr. Wellbrock.

STANDINGS

WEEK 2 SCHEDULE

RUMSPRINGA (0-0-1) vs. PUMPED UP KICKS (0-2)

The Pumps will be looking to build on last week's debut. The defending champs will be looking for W #1.

BOOS ON FIRST (1-0-1) vs F3B (1-0)

RUMSPRINGA (0-0-1) vs. F3B (1-0)

F3B looked very strong against the Jelly last week. This week they'll be tested again with a doubleheader against Boos on First and 'Springa.

PBJT (1-1) vs PUMPED UP KICKS (0-2)

A rematch from week 1. The Jelly def. PUK 13-1. It will be interesting to see the progress made by game 4 of the season.

TOP 5 PLAYS

You probably noticed I got a new toy that I've been playing with. It's a gimbal that keeps my phone steady and helps me get some pretty cool shots. Each week, I'll try to put together some of the best plays and share them. If you happen to catch something cool, be sure to shoot it to me. The more content the better!

No matter how many times I tell a new bar manager that we're going to bring some numbers, I'm not sure they ever truly believe me. Buffalo Wild Wings was no exception. All 5 teams made it out to the bar and they actually ran out of pitchers! The short-staffed wait crew struggled a bit, but worked hard. Next week, they'll be better prepared to handle us. Apologies to everyone who had slow service and thank you to everyone that came out. Let's keep it up!

DRAFT LEAGUE COMING SOON!

We're finalizing details this week and plan to open registration for the summer draft league ASAP. Be on the lookout for early bird sales. For those who are new, the Wednesday summer draft league is a really fun twist. People have the option of joining as an individual and captains will take turns selecting players at the draft party! It really mixes up the teams, balances the competition, and helps form fun and new relationships. It's simply the best!

OTHER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE

Of course, we have tons of fun leagues available this summer at clubwaka.com/hampton-roads. Check out beach volleyball, cornhole, bowling, softball, and more!

... And I think that's all the updates that I have. Surely, I've forgotten something, but this has already been WAY too long. So let's wrap this up. I hope you enjoyed the blog. Please be sure to drop down into the Facebook comments and leave a note. Going forward, please be sure to participate in the shoutout threads or message me directly with any notes, highlights, or feedback from your games so I can include them in the recaps.

Thanks for checking it out and I hope you all have a very Happy Easter!
