Spring 2013 3rd Team All-Peninsula

The ballots have been counted. Over 100 players voted to elect the top 3 players at each position! The voting was tough, as there is a lot of talent in WAKA VA Peninsula. Whether it was with crisp bunts, speedy athleticism, powerful legs, or shutdown defense, these are the individuals who set themselves apart. Let's take a look at the top 33 players as voted by their peers, starting with the 3rd team!

by Nathaniel Johnson
In the Spring 2013 season, David “D-Bizzle” Baum made the move from the outfield to first base for Free Ballin’. The move paid off for his team as they exploded to a second place regular season finish and David’s first selection to an All-Peninsula team. Baum was probably the best kept secret on the Peninsula, until a signature moment when he blasted a walk-off home run against Rumspringa. A soccer background provided The Baumer has one of the most powerful legs in the league and Peninsula outfields have often fallen victim to his charms and “Baums”. Do not expect this to be David Baum’s first and last appearance on an All-Peninsula team.

Jeremy Edge is known throughout the country for being one of the most technically precise bunters in kickball. He seems to always paint the line and burst up the line in stride. His consistency gave Moose Knuckles a solid anchor at the top and started several rallies. Most notably, his bunt single sparked a big MK comeback win against That Just Happened in week 6. But don't think he's just a one dimensional bunter. Dude can kick bombs too, and Edge proved it by winning a preseason home run derby. No wonder Jorts has such a huge man crush on him.

by Nathaniel Johnson
With all respect to the pitchers on the first and second teams, no hurler can dominate the game from the mound quite like Mark Flores. The Superman socks that fly behind him as he winds up are a fitting piece of apparel for the Free Ballin’ pitcher who repeats as a Third Team All-Peninsula selection. Flores mixes speed, location and spin in a dizzying assault on unsuspecting kickers. Meanwhile, veteran kickers are still susceptible to fouling out at the hands of Mark Flores. As if it wasn’t bad enough for opposing players already, Flores is the eldest member of the All-Peninsula team by a wide margin (I’m too polite to reveal his age here, but feel free to ask him if you ever consider retirement).

by Nathaniel Johnson
Ricky Holmes might actually be the exact antithesis of Dwight Howard, who he compares himself favorably to in his Facebook profile.  Ricky is the team captain and undisputed leader of Rumspringa, he is a human spark plug on defense, and he has improved into an elite lead off kicker. I get tired just trying to list the many things Ricky does for his team. He bunts with precision, sends laser rocket line drives, hypes his team up, calms his team down, gets to any ball at charger and he’ll be waiting at Luckie’s to tell you all about Rumspringa blue and make sure everybody’s hands go up... and they stay there.

by Brent Wentworth
Jiselle Anderson is a perennial member of the All-Peninsula honors and with good reason. She straight up dominates. The former college soccer standout has the skill to kick away or bunt to get on base. Anderson is without a doubt, one of the toughest ladies to get out in the league.

by Brent Wentworth
Another season, another stand out performance by Mr. John LaNeave. The Wahoo himself gave the Knucklers plenty of offensive options, as he's a great bunter and a line drive machine. There are 11 players in the field at all times, but that hardly seems enough when John is at the plate. He always seems to find the wholes and gaps.

by Nathaniel Johnson
The Moose Knuckles captain was capable of leading his team from any position on the field. Nick plays first base and outfield at a high level and is a capable of stepping in to pitch and charge. However, being an able fielder and leader is not all it takes to make it on the All-Peninsula squad. Nick boasts an impressive array of offensive skills which have gained the attention of Peninsula voters recently. It is rare to find a versatile player like Nick who can bunt and kick away effectively in any offensive scenario.

by Brent Wentworth
In the Fall of 2008, Jen Nardi first stepped onto the WAKA VA Peninsula scene, founding the Foul Balls franchise. She's been impressing kickballers every season since then. One of the more versatile ladies in the game, Jen is capable of playing multiple positions well, even positions traditionally associated with males, like pitcher. Her soccer background not only helps her kick with power, but it's where Nardi's patented over the shoulder throw comes from. This spring, Nardi lead the Foul Balls to their first winning record in over 2 years with her great play and leadership. Unfortunately (for us), this was her last VA Peninsula campaign, as she accepted a transfer to Boston late in the season. We'll certainly miss her around here!

by Brent Wentworth
There isn't a play on the field that Roger Jackson doesn't believe he can make. With unlimited energy and a quick burst out of the box, Roger wears opposing defenses out and absolutely smothers bunters. Opponents, you better not put any air under your bunts. Jackson will scoop it up. He's one of several reasons why the Clockers lead the league in least runs allowed per game (0.8).

by Brent Wentworth
In years past, Kecia Warner was known more for her dancing skills and her post-game Luckie's partying than for her play on the field. But recently, she's really developed into a dynamic all around player. Warner consistently drops bunts down the line and quick to first. She's also added in a line drive to her repertoire that can keep the defenses honest. In the field, Warner shows a lot of range in the middle infield and sure hands to secure outs. If you still think she's nothing but a party girl, than you're underestimating her at your own risk. Kecia will burn you.

by Nathaniel Johnson
If you’ve been to War Memorial Stadium on a Wednesday night, then you have heard Nicole Plesha.  However, Plesha the kickball player is so much more than the “color commentary” she can be heard providing for her Battlestar Ballsacktica games.  When Plesha is roaming the third base area or anywhere in the outfield, it’s a death sentence for the opposition’s fly balls.  When on offense, Plesha can drive the ball into the outfield and is yet another dangerous RKI machine for a power kicking team.

Check back on the blog as we release the 2nd Team and the 1st Team later in the week!

Norfolk N'Chance

Norfolk N'Chance
Captains: Phil Batlzis & Nique Williams
First Round Pick: Randy Devlin

Phil & Nique came out of the gates taking speed, speed, and more speed. When you start off with Randy Devlin, you're probably set at the top of your lineup for a few picks. Then you add Josh Waldrop for some insurance. That wasn't enough for them though, adding Bryan McCrickard to round out the tour de force. Oh yeah, not to mention they are also top-tier catchers, outfielders, and chargers. Can it get better? How about adding a premium first baseman and another outfielder? Cue Travis Cobb and Chris "Bundy" Leblanc. Just take a second and really look at that defensive line-up. THEN, they add Bryan "No Shoes" Moore and Alden Lawrence for late round insurance. Simply steals in the 7th & 8th rounds.

Norfolk's advantage going into the draft was one of their captains is a top-tier female, and as most pundits will tell you, you will live and die by your females. And even though they waited until later rounds to grab most of their girls, they started off with two bruisers on the base paths in Julie Kittelson and Amy Leineweber.  Picking up Meghan Frum, who had a big hand in filling for Jen Nardi after she moved and leading Foul Balls to their first tournament win in 3 years. And lastly adding Esther Becker, a fresh energetic player, who with some guidance (looking at you Bundy), could develop into a difference maker.

Fate played a little part in two late rookie picks in Erica Danaher and Matt Wimberly. After Phil chose Erica, I informed him that she would really like to play on the same team as her boyfriend (Matt) and before I could even finish my thought, he looks to the booth right next to him (in which they were sitting) and says "We've already talked about it. Don't worry."

The final two guys on the roster are Wilson Gideon, the big foot from New Kickheads and rookie Michael Sykes. Not much is known about him, but if he is looking to learn about kickball, this appears to be a great squad to be playing with in his first season.

BOOBS over BALLS

BOOBS over BALLS
Captains: Brian Neal & Amy Monteiro
First Round Pick: Michael Machie

Brain Neal and Amy Monteiro started off drafting with a relatively sizeable advantage over some other teams in the draft. It is often spoke that catcher and charger are the first two spots you fill in a kickball draft. Well, Brian Neal is in an excellent catcher, so there was no guessing where to start, and they went straight out and got the one guy that I was hearing at the top of everyone's list. Michael Machie brings the defensive and the offensive and the speed. Done and done.

Their next 4 picks are probably the most impressive part of their draft though. All 4 picks have circuit experience. The first 2 picks in Frank Council and Josh Joyner fill the needs BoB still needed on defense with a pitcher and on offense with one of the biggest legs in the league. Their next 2 picks are quite simply steals at where they got them. Brandon Silver strikes fear in the heart of pitchers with his line drive kicks incredible hands on defense. Nicole Plesha is, well, pretty much the BOOBS version of Brandon Silver. She can kick and she can catch and the fact she fell where she did was extremely surprising.

I feel like Amy had a little to do with the next 2 picks and chose two ladies I saw her chatting up at the Spring EOS. Unbeknownst to most of the league though, Camber Mancuso has wheels and will catch whatever comes her way, while Kelsey Whitelock appears to be a running fool (facebook stalking) that matches Amy pound for pound energy and spunk. Brian Neal quickly responds with 4 very under the radar players on spring teams that just don't get a lot of attention. John Vrooman, Bill Coaty, Andy Kyser, and Eric Machuca are all backbones of their teams, and their captains can tell you they are going to be valuable on any team.

Megan McDowell and Mary Burkholder not only add kickball experience, but they have all played with Brian Neal previously adding to the chemistry of the team. Jade Huffman is looking to play in her anniversary season since her debut last summer, while there still isn't a lot out on the rookie Tom Johnson, he is a marine so he undoubtedly a bad ass.

Serfectly Pober

Serfectly Pober
Captains: Bryan Freed & April Moore
First Round Pick : Scott Duncan

With the amount of experience these two captains have immersed in competitive kickball, there is no doubt they were poised to draft a talent heavy team. Couple that with the first pick in the draft, and that's a recipe for success. Freed and April wasted no time either going after the big dogs either. Scott Duncan brings versatility on the defensive side of the ball (quite possibly some of the best catching hands in the game) and one of the biggest legs in the game.

The theme for the rest of the early rounds was predominately experience. Players like Jason Kidd, John Wilkinson and Amanda Doolittle add to the depth of kickball knowledge at a highly competitive, intense level. And while Jamel "Fitz" Fitzgerald many not bring many years to the table, he did just recently win a Wenthworth Trophy for the 2013 Spring Season for which he was a heavy contributor.

It's not all about season veterans though. Freed knows talent when he sees it and scoops up the crafty Andy Doye and the ferocious Joe Stumpo. Both choices left fellow captains moaning and groaning because potential future picks of theirs were no longer available.

It may be easy to pick the "obvious" picks in the earlier rounds, but maybe the way to truly grade how a captain's draft goes is how he utilizes his picks in the later rounds. And frankly, a lot of these picks are forged through word of mouth through friends or former captains. It's evident Freed & April know how to press the flesh, with quality late round picks in Jennifer O'Shaugnessy, Simone Harbas, Fagel Baer, Jeremy Smithey, & Steven Glenn.

The one incredible thing about this season is the amount of rookies there are in the draft. There were close to 30 players that have never played before and are put their training wheels to the test in this draft league. I can tell you Freed & April may know how to run a competitive kickball team, but they are also just stand-up people that know how to keep everyone engaged and having a fun time. So Serena D'Angelo, Cory Pochop, and John Hagler better get ready, because they've just found their favorite way to spend Wednesdays from now on!

VA Patriot Draft Results

Last night, VA Patriot held the 2nd annual player selection draft! Over 100 players came out for the draft party at the Cactus last night. It was a great scene, and 10 pairs of captains filled their rosters! Mr. Scott Duncan was the #1 overall pick going to Serfectly Pober (Bryan Freed and April Moore). To view the overall results, round by round, check it out here!

The 3 Up 3 Down crew was live streaming the draft, so if you have 3 hours to kill today, check it out.

Awesome job to Keith Morehart for organizing and MCing the event. Also thanks to John Wilkinson for keeping up with the draft tracker all night. All in all, it was a great time! Can't wait to see all the new teams on the field on July 10th!

The Mariners Museum Crew was excited about joining WAKA and finding out where they'll be picked.

VA Patriot Mock Draft

Alright everyone the draft is finally upon us and how exactly the first round shakes out will have a lot to do with how the draft lottery turns out but sight unseen, here's one person's best guess as to how the first round looks like:

1.  Scott Duncan - Scott’s penchant for kicking the hell out of the ball sometimes overshadows just how good he is on defense, whether it be his powerful arm at charger, or stretching and hands at first that make his chargers look good.

2.  Randy Devlin - The best way to describe Devlin’s play is that he explodes out of the kicker’s box before you do, whether it be on defense at catcher or at the top of your lineup.

3.  Steve Midlik - A former 1st team All Peninsula selection at charger, Midlik made his return for the Chubby Gangsters this spring and did not miss a beat.  He might have the most powerful leg in the league.

4.  Jason Kidd - Value is sky-high after his performance in the tournament this past weekend, gives you great defense, speed as well as great knowledge and leadership.

5.  Frank Council - In a nutshell, Council just makes your team better.  His return to Free Ballin’ this spring helped earn them the #2 seed this season.  (Author’s note: In my kickball experience Frank has kicked the longest homerun I’ve witnessed).

6.  Gene Effird -  One of the anchors of the record-setting 5 O’Clockers defense from this spring, solidifies the middle of your lineup.

7.  Dominique Smith - Cannon for an arm at catcher and is a one-man wrecking crew on offense as you can put him at the top of your lineup for speed or in the middle for power.

8.  Roger Jackson - Cagey veteran who will pounce on any mistake you make as a kicker while playing catcher.  Solidifies the top of your lineup on offense.

9.  Michael Machie - Speedy player who can play catcher or charger and solidifies the top of the lineup.  Always a threat to go first to third, eases the pressure on the kickers after him in the lineup.

10. Mark Flores - A wild card at the end of round 1 as nothing but chargers and catchers have come off the board but Flores’ reputation precedes him as a game changer on the mound, constantly fooling kickers with his speed and movement.

Other Names to look out for:

Alex Noctor: a first round pick in the draft last year, Noctor can play a variety of positions on defense and is an excellent bunter.

Wesley McClain: If your team wants to look at catcher in the first round, I’d highly recommend targeted McClain at charger on the way back around.  Great arm and powerful leg.

Brad Kirby:  The Braddlesnake (SSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!) is an underrated charger and sets the tone for a dangerous Pop Pop lineup.

Battlestar Summertime Summary

So, I've been MIA for a while since it's like....SUMMER AND STUFF!!!!!  Kids are home, things to do, people to see, food to eat, sun to bask in, and boats to float in!  Sorry for the delay, but I don't really think anyone noticed anyway.  Sooooo, let's catch up....

"No Lights Night" caught us off guard when we tried to practice a few drills in the dark at Tabb Middle.  But take a look at this awesome action photo of Joe Stumpo catching one in the face as Michael Machie rockets one to first from the charger position.
Just look at all the spit coming out of Stumpos face!  Once in a lifetime shot, right there!!!  I'd like to credit Nick, Emily, and MK for all the photo taking tips this year. It's really paid off!!

Battlestar creamed the Misfits at Gosnold's for the make up game the following week, and I'm sure there were some great plays but who the hell can remember that far back?? I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, so DEAL! We pretty much kicked away to our hearts delight and had great fun...
Double headers ruled the last 4 games of the season because of stupid rain, rain, and more rain, and no damn lights...so the second to last week, the Ballsacks faced Chubby Gangsters and Moose Knuckles. The CG game was a surprise loss to Battlestar, but it's pretty much hit or miss with this team.  We either got it or we don't. CG played a little differently than expected in that they booted it instead of bunting in certain situations.  The very first kick was a fly to right field where Karen "Silent Killer" Savell was waiting. Michael Wezensky had 3 fouls on him and he was desperate to keep it in bounds, so BOOM! It's was a pretty tight game until bad throws were being made and catches weren't being caught at first...After the game Stumpo was asked why he was having a bad game. "I just hadn't gotten a hit lately and I'm really bummed, man," said Stumpo. "What do you mean?? You get on base every stinking game!" "No, no!  I mean the Italian mafia hasn't called on me to make a hit in quite a while.  I just miss the thrill of doing the job.  It's really messing with my game, dude!"  Um... yeah, ok....
So they fell to the Chubby's, 5-3.
But then they came back in the 2nd game to tie Moose Knuckles 2-2.  With hardly any errors mucking things up for Battlestar, they can hang with the best of them and that's a fact!  With the score at 2-0 Moose Knuckles, Jason Lantz-alot cold-cocked the sh....er... the mess out of the ball right down the right field foul line for a 2 run homer and tied that sucker up!  Battlestar was able to hold MK to no runs for the final inning.  Wham bam, thank you Ma'am!
On to the next double header and we faced 5 O'Clockers and New Kickers.  It was tight for 3 solid defensive innings with the score 0-0.  Machie and Mark "Rabbit" Thompson worked in tandum to keep runners from advancing like a well oiled machine... then 5 O's made their move.  With 1 on base a deep kick to right field was booted where the "Silent Killer" was there to make a running backwards catch.  It was thrown in and then relayed to 3rd where the runner kept going and made it in for the score.  They opened it up to 3 runs but the Ballsacks couldn't get any runs in and fell 3-0
Then it was a fun game with the New Kickers.  With the game not really meaning much to the Ballsacks, they decided to change things around a bit.  New pitchers came into the game and everyone played where they hadn't before...mostly. With 5 different pitchers, things got a little weird but darn fun! Lorraine Adkins, MVPeter Kuhr, Mark Thompson, Michael Machie, and Karen Savell all took the mound.  Yeah, there were a few walks made, but they didn't do too bad.  OK, some of them really sucked but it made for a really fun game!  And a close one at that!  The new Kickers were actually winning in the first inning!  They made some pretty awesome plays and kicks, but the Ballsacks got a little more serious and came from behind in a 4-2 victory.
So there ya have it! 3 blogs in one. BOOM! Oh, yeah....I need to stop some terrible rumors going around about one of our Ballsack players....
The answer is NO!  Erin Machie did NOT swallow a WAKA kickball!  I don't know how that rumor started but it needs to stop! NOW!  That there is a little baby Ballsack and he/she is due to start playing in August of 2034. Get ready!  I have a feeling it's gonna be a quick little sucker!

P.S.- Brandon Silver hasn't been in any highlights for a while since he tried to go all out ninja at his MMA classes and threw out his back.  His old rickety self is healing and he's going to miss out in the tourney as well. We will miss your awesome BOOT and your face, dude! It hasn't been the same without you!  (Actually, rumor has it that he'll be cheering for the Ballsacks on Saturday, so look for the orange shirts and come give him a (very gentle) pat on the back and wish him well!)

BALLLLLLLLLLLSACKS!!!

VA Peninsula End of Season

TOURNAMENT TIME!!

As you all know, 2 days from now we will be battling it out to see who gets to take home the Wentworth Trophy!

With a couple teams already forfeiting due to numbers, we have reseeded all the remaining team, assigned reffing duties for the early games, and posted the finalized tournament bracket. You can find it here:

https://docs.google.com/a/kickball.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjKkiopJDjWgdDhlZGh4d3BLOF9NMnF4ejFWX2UxWUE#gid=0

If your team isn't one of the fortuante teams to advance through the tournament, and you are willing to ref some of the later games, feel free to stick around. We can always use able and willing volunteers as the day goes on.

Even if you're not interested in reffing, don't forget there will a plethora of activities going on throughout the day, so just hanging out at the field itself is going to be a good time.

Then following the tournament will be the End of Season Party at Checkered Flag Tavern in Hampton. Free beer, discounted food and other drinks, with all of your kickball friends. Nuff said.

See everyone in a couple days. Can't wait!!

Coaches Top 10 Poll - 6.19.2013

Here it is. The final WAKA Wednesday of the spring season. Let's run down the coaches top 10 as we head into the final week!

10. Foul Balls (5-4, 15 pts)
They've lost co-founder and captain Jen Nardi due to a transfer to Boston. Regardless a win or tie tonight vs Misfits will give the Foules their first winning record since 2009.

9. Chubby Gangsters (4-5, 21 pts. 1 first place vote)
The Gangbangers are peaking at the right time, winning 2 out of their last 3 matches against strong teams. Will they be a threat in the tourney. At least one voter, Alex Noctor, thinks so. He gave Chubby the top spot in his ballot.

8. Battlestar Ballsacktica (3-4-1, 30 pts)
You never know what you're going to get with the Ballsacks. Last week, they allowed 4 CG runs in the 5th to lose the game, before coming back and tying Moose Knuckles in game 2 of a double header.

7. Peanut Butter Jelly Time (6-3, 31 pts)
It's been a great campaign for the Jellies, but they have to figure out a way to hang with the top tier teams if they want to make a deep run on Saturday.

6. That Just Happened (5-4, 44 pts)
The close games have been kypronite to these men and women of steel. They lost another heartbreaker in the 5th to 'Springa in their last game.

5. Rumspringa (4-3-1, 54 pts)
Showed a lot of resiliency in gutting out a big W last week.

4. Moose Knuckles (5-3-1, 55 pts)
The Knucks are supremely talented, but their flat play makes you question how bad they want it. Despite not meeting high expectations in the regular season, many still predict MK to be a Wentworth Trophy contender.

3. Pop Pop (5-2-1, 64 pts)
Perhaps the most aggressive team on the bases, Pop Pop is always a threat to go for the home run. It's paid off so far.

2. Free Ballin' (7-1, 80 pts)
Mary Katherine has got her squad rolling this season. Tonight's big showdown with the Clockers should decide the #1 seed for the tourney.

1. 5 O'Clockers (7-0-1, 89 pts, 8 first place votes)
The Clockers have held the top spot since early in the season and are well positioned to capture their 3rd Wentworth Trophy. However, they'll need to do so without the services of Gene Efird, Courtney Efird, and captain Britney Travis, who are on the beach in Cabo currently.

Others receiving votes: Kick Ass (6), Dirty Mike & the Boyz (5), Who's Driving Home? (1)

End of Season Tournament & Party!

Ladies and Gentleman, it is that time of year again. End of Season time! Where the games really matter and the parties are that of legend... if only we can remember them the next day. So let's get down to it and lay out the details for both happenings.

One thing we are doing differently are actual activities on the field during the tournament. In the past, it has felt like once your team is no longer in the running for the Wentworth Trophy, your team just packed up your stuff and left. Want reasons to stick around and hang out with your fellow kickballers (other than just watching kickball)? We will have several things going on at the field this tournament, so make sure you plan on staying and hanging out with all of us!

End of Season Tournament

- Will be held this Saturday (June 22nd) at Gosnold Hope Park (901 E Little Back River Rd  Hampton, VA 23669).
- First games start @ 9:00 am and will be seeded according to the final standings of the regular season.
- All games will be played until their is a definite winner. There are no ties in the End of Season Tournament.
- We will be asking for volunteers to ref the later games. If you are willing to help us out, you will be compensated handsomely (even if that just means a beer at the End of Season Party).

Side stage shenanigans:

- There will be several corn hole boards (feel free to bring more if you have some).
- There will be several Kan Jam (or Disc Slam if you prefer) games & Frisbeer games going on.
- Lastly, there will be a hot dog eating contest. Sounds dumb? You know you can't resist competition! There will be a small entry fee, but it will all be donated to our WAKA Kicks Cancer Relay for Life Team.

Now time for the moment you've all been waiting for...

End of Season Party!

- Will be held at Checkered Flag Tavern (1721 N King St  Hampton, VA 23669). Party starts at 7:00 pm.
- 6 free kegs will be provided for all WAKA VA Peninsula Spring '13 players!!
- Happy hour prices on all liquor drinks and beer throughout the entire night!!
- $3 WAKA Bombs!!

Damn, this Saturday is going to be CRAZY!

It's the Bar Buzz (bitch)

“There’s only two types of people in the world. The ones that entertain, and the ones that observe.” That’s right kids, it’s Britney week.  Let’s kick this off in style…

16. Misfits “When I'm not with you I lose my mind. Give me a sign. Hit me baby one more time.” Whomp whomppppp

15. Battle star “ Oops!...I did it again to your heart. Got lost in this game”  You’re there, you’re not there. Inconsitency is your style, kinda like Britney’s sanity at times.

14. Chubby Gangstas  “I make believe That you are here It's the only way I see clear What have I done You seem to move on easy.”  I guess, I need you Chubbies.

13. Kick Ass “Love me hate me, Say what you want about me, But all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to If You Seek Amy.”  Love you, hate you, I just know I missed you.

12. Pop Pop I'm looking at a picture in my hand. Trying my best to understand. I really want to know what we did wrong  With a love that felt so strong. If only you were here tonight, I know that we could make it right.”  There were a significantly small number of yellow shirts around. I cried a small tear.

11. 5 O’Clockers  “Whatchu gonna do when the crowd goes Ayo? Why you standin' on the wall? Music startin' everywhere.. Why don’t you do something??”  Come on, show me some of that winning magic.

10. Free Ballin  “You're the star now, welcome to the big league. They all want a pic, they all wanna see, see, see. What you're made of... what you're gonna do. Is life gonna get the best of you?”  Falling off happens to everyone.  Just ask Brit Brit. She shaved her head and hit a car with an umbrella. She’s fine now and you can be too!

9. Dirty Mike and the Boyz Boys! Sometimes a girl just needs one…”  Although, a few more of you couldn’t hurt things.

8. Chicken Tetrazzini  “Lately, I've been stuck imagining what I wanna do and what I really think. Time to blow out. Be a little inappropriate, 'cause I know that everybody's thinkin' it when the light's out”  Time to make some moves up the rankings a bit!

7. NKOTB Feels like I'm caught in the middle. That's when I realize... I'm not a girl, Not yet a woman. All I need is time, A moment that is mine, While I'm in between.” The middle of the pack may seem like a hard place to be, but think about how poor Britney felt!

6. Moose Knuckles “I'm Miss American Dream since I was 17. Don't matter if I step on the scene Or sneak away to the Philippines.”  It’s my favorite one and I write this so….. yeah.

5. Who’s Driving Home  And I love what you do. Don’t you know that you’re toxic?”  Dancing and shots per usual. Switch it up. Maybe some choreography from Ms. Spears???

4.  PBJT “What's practical is logical. What the hell, who cares? All I know is I'm so happy when you're dancing there.”  Good to see you!!!!!  I was told to watch out for you next week. Don’t let me down J

3. Rumspringa  I'm up against the speaker, tryin' to take on the music.  It's like a competition, me against the beat.  I wanna get in the zone, I wanna get in the zone. If you really wanna battle, saddle up and get your rhythm.”  I swear you were all there, I ate some snacks and there were four of you there. Dancing and fun always helps, because who doesn't like a little dirty dancing.

2. Foul Balls Superstar, Where you from, hows it going? I know you. Gotta clue, what you're doing?”  We will miss you Jenn Nardi!

1. That Just Happened  “All the eyes on me in the center of the ring. Just like a circus.”  I told you, it’s not about numbers. It’s about mingling, dedication, and friendship. TJH point blank asked me what they needed to do. I told them “Start the epic dance battle. Or get naked.” And that, boys and girls, just happened.

So in conclusion…..

Week 10 Gambling Lines

Week Ten Waka Wednesday Eve is a big sports night as the Spurs and Heat face off in Game 3 and our boys in red, white and blue battle Panama in a CONCACAF match.  I’ll be focused on the hardwood and the pitch, so I’m just taking the readers along for the ride.  I’m going to be just like fellow Furman University alum, Clint Dempsey, and do three things phenomenally well at the same time.

Kick Ass (-3.0) over The Misfits
Earvin “Magic” Johnson during the pregame show: “Manu can only score one way: shooting the pullback jumper, or driving to the basket”.  Manny Anderson can beat you only one way: by being ridiculously fast and devilishly good-looking.

Rumspringa (-1.5) over Foul Balls
Michael Wilbon sounds really pretentious when he addresses Magic Johnson by his government name, “Earvin”.  Did they know each other in elementary school?  It’s like when I call Wellbrock “Matt”.  It feels wrong and leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Battlestar Ballsacktica (-2.0) over Chubby Gangsters
White House Down previews…stop teasing.  I really want to know who wins in that one-on-one game between Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.  I have a strange feeling that Tatum dominates.  I tried to think of someone on Battlestar to compare to Channing Tatum.  Seriously, I really tried.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time (-2.0) over The Misfits
The Spurs lead the Heat at the end of the first quarter 24-20.  Tiago Splitter is playing well on both ends of the floor.  There’s hope for us big goofy white dudes Brent Obershaw, Keith Morehart, Rob Kroll, Jason Burnette.

That Just Happened vs. Rumspringa: Pick ‘Em
The soccer match hasn’t kicked off yet, but it’s essential for the U.S. Men’s National Team to score the win and earn crucial World Cup qualifying points.  Likewise, this is a pivotal game for both TJH and Rumspringa.  The winner could solidify a position in the top 4 for the June 22nd tournament.

Moose Knuckles (-0.5) over Battlestar Ballsacktica
Both teams have gone cold four minutes into the second quarter.  I bet Jeremy Edge is a big Norris Cole fan…it just kind of makes sense.

Pop Pop (-5.0) over Peanut Butter Jelly Time
Spurs take a ten point lead with 4:35 left in the first half.

That Just Happened (-11.5) over New Kickheads
I’m tired and there’s really not much to say about this game.  It’s about as interesting as Tuesday Night Book Club at Tim Duncan’s house.

Moose Knuckles (-9.5) over Chicken Tetrazzini
Is anyone still reading this?

5 O’Clockers (-12.5) over Who’s Driving Home
Bill Simmons informed me that several Spurs players were late to the stadium because there was heavy traffic.  Good to see that issue has played a major role in their play.

That Just Happened (-9.5) over Chicken Tetrazzini
Team USA is wearing white tonight in Seattle, same as That Just Happened.  I’m expecting a win from both.

Free Ballin’ (-10.5) over Dirty Mike and the Boyz

Did Mike Miller and Chris “Birdman” Anderson make cameos in The Other Guys as Dirty Mike and the Boyz?

VA Freedom - End of Season Party and Playoffs!

Freedom 'ballers!

It's been a great first season of WAKA kickball in Newport News this spring, and now it's time to wrap it up this weekend. We have a couple of exciting events.

End of Season Party!
Reminder: The End of Season Party is Friday night, 7 PM, at Luckies Party Bar in the Hampton Power Plant. We have a $400 tab for kickballers good for domestic beers and well drinks for kickballers! We also have a complimentary appetizer buffet as well... Come on out after work and have some food, a few drinks, mingling, dancing, and more! Check out the Facebook event here

As always, drink responsibly. Bring some cab money. Your car will be ok in the Luckie's parking lot! :)

End of Season Tournament!
On Sunday, we close out the season with the play off tournament! Games begin at 12:30 PM to allow us enough time to complete the tourney. Here is the full bracket:

A few notes about the tourney. Here are the official WAKA Kickball Tournament guidelines. Of note:
  • There is no RPS. The higher seeded team kicks in the bottom half of the inning.
  • OT: Of course there are no ties in the playoffs. If a game has to go to extra innings, there are modified rules though. (only 8 fielders, a runner starts on 2nd) For more info, please refer to the guidelines.
  • I am working on finding refs to volunteer to help. I have a couple lined up already, but know that you may be asked to help ref later rounds if your team has been eliminated. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer. (In addition to my gratitude, I'll buy you your first beer at Brickhouse afterwards)
Looking forward to a great weekend of VA Freedom kickball! Thank you all for making this such an awesome Sunday Funday since April! If anyone has any questions, please let me know! See you all at Luckie's and at the fields!

- Brent

Oh yeah... Please join us for our 2nd Annual VA Patriot summer league. Games are Wednesdays in July/August at Deer Park in Newport News! Visit kickball.com/vapatriotexpress for more info and to sign up!
